Francis, other religious leaders vow to eradicate slavery

Pope Francis and leaders from other major religions have vowed to do “everything in their power” to eradicate modern slavery by 2020 in a joint declaration signed in a ceremony at the Vatican Gardens today.

“We will do everything in our power (…) to work together towards the freedom of everyone enslaved, suffering from human trafficking, for them to have their futures back,” the document signed by Anglican, Orthodox, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, and Muslim leaders.

“In the eyes of God, each human being is a free person, whether girl, boy, woman, or man, and is destined to exist for the good of all in equality and fraternity,” it adds.

The signers called for “practical and spiritual action from all creeds and people of good will to eradicate modern slavery before 2020 for good.”

“We state that modern slavery in all its forms, prostitution, forced labour, mutilation, organ traffic or child labour are crimes against humanity in each of our creeds,” Pope Francis said.

The declarations stress that “technology, opportunity, awareness, wisdom and innovation to achieve this moral and human obligation” is currently available.

“We [the signers] make this declaration in the name of the victims,” the Pope said. He pointed out that human trafficking occurs virtually everywhere, often hidden in accepted conventions.

Energy shares lead Wall Street higher; telecoms slip

US stocks rose today as energy stocks led the S&P 500 and Dow, while Biogen’s rally on news about an experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s disease topped gains at the Nasdaq.

The day’s gains were broad, with nine of the 10 S&P 500 industry sectors higher. The only group to fall was telecoms , down 1.8 percent with AT&T down 2.2 percent at $34.29 and Verizon down 1.8 percent at $49.11. Sprint announced it will cut in half the monthly price of service for Verizon and AT&T customers who switch to Sprint.

Energy shares on the S&P 500 rose 1.3 percent even as crude oil prices resumed their fall. US crude fell 2.4 percent to near a five-year low while Brent lost 2.3 percent.

Exxon Mobil and Chevron were among the largest gainers on both the Dow and the S&P, up about 2 percent each.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 102.75 points, or 0.58 percent, to 17,879.55, a record high. The S&P 500 gained 13.11 points, or 0.64 percent, to 2,066.55 and the Nasdaq Composite added 28.46 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,755.81.

European share market indexes also rose, helped by a rebound in energy stocks after crude oil prices bounced from Monday’s five-year lows.

BP featured among the top gainers, up 4.7 percent, with several traders citing market talk of a takeover bid from rival Royal Dutch Shell. Shell and BP declined to comment.

Shares in Italian oil services group Saipem and German steelmaker Salzgitter bucked the trend on Tuesday, tumbling 10.8 percent and 7.4 percent respectively after Russia scrapped its 40 billion-euro South Stream European gas export pipeline project, which involved the two firms.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index ended 0.5 percent higher at 1,392.51 points, led by what traders said was a technical bounce in energy shares following last week’s sell-off.

Total rose 3.4 percent and Royal Dutch Shell gained 4.1 percent, while the STOXX Europe 600 energy sector index gained 3.2 percent. The index is still down about 22 percent since June, hurt by a slump in crude, with shares of oil services firms the worst hit.

Britain’s FTSE 100 index gained 1.3 percent and France’s CAC 40 added 0.3 percent.

Germany’s DAX slipped 0.3 percent. The index hit 10,000 points earlier in the session, but failed to cross above a record high of 10,050.98 points reached in June, triggering profit taking, traders said.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei share average closed at a seven-year high today, as investors speculated that the Bank of Japan was buying stocks, while they shrugged off a downgrade of Japan’s sovereign debt credit rating by Moody’s Investors Service.

The Nikkei eked out gains of 0.4 percent to end at 17,663.22, with exporter shares such as Denso leading the gains.

The broader Topix and the JPX-Nikkei Index 400 also rose 0.4 percent.

Massa says tax pressure ‘ferocious’

Argentineans can no longer cope with a “ferocious” tax pressure, head of the Renewal Front (RF) Sergio Massa affirmed accusing the government of “denying reality” as he vowed to eliminate income tax if he gets elected president in 2015.

According to lawmaker Massa, demands to have Argentina’s income tax floor revised do not respond to “an ideology” but to the need of “people’s pockets.”

“The level of tax pressure is ferocious and there is a profound denial of reality. Income tax is not an ideology, it is people’s pockets,” the ex mayor of the Buenos Aires province locality of Tigre told media today.

Massa said politicians are “discussing how to rob from workers a part of their salary in December while those who steal are being defended by a ruling and have their salary in jail.” “It is an upside down country,” he complaint.

On Monday, Massa sent a formal letter to head of the AFIP tax bureau Ricardo Echegaray demanding to have December’s salary bonus – “aguinaldo” in Spanish – exempted from income tax deductions.

“What we have to defend is people’s purchasing power. Only a whim can explain December tax deductions, we have brought to the administrator of public revenue (Ricardo Echegaray the need) to call technical teams from different (political) forces to resolve the situation,” the RF leader said and vowed to eliminate income tax if he gets to the presidency next year.

“It can not be that the one working and small and medium-size enterprises are the ones that continue to be punished and not those who gamble getting excessive income. That is the way.”

Israel: Netanyahu fires two ministers, dissolves Parliament, calls for early elections

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today he would dissolve parliament and seek early elections and ordered the dismissal of his Finance and Justice ministers.

«The prime minister plans to call for parliament’s dissolution as soon as possible and to go to the people and get a clear mandate to lead Israel,» a statement from his office said.

Netanyahu, who leads the right-wing Likud party, also said he ordered the dismissal of Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who both head centrist parties.

«In past weeks, including the past day, ministers Lapid and Livni have harshly attacked the government that I head. I will no longer tolerate an opposition inside the government,» Netanyahu said in the statement.

Late surge sees Leonas past England in Champions Trophy

The Argentine women’s hockey team continued their unbeaten start to the Champions Trophy with a 4-1 win over England, as ‘Las Leonas’ hit three goals in just seven minutes at the end of the game to prevail in Mendoza.

After beating Germany and drawing to Australia in their opening two games, Argentina needed to win by at least three goals in order to retake top spot in Pool B. But the game started inauspiciously, when England took an early lead in the final match of the first round.

The Leonas were not defeated, however. In the second quarter the team equalised through Carla Rebecchi, who converted a penalty corner to restore parity. The game remained deadlocked until the final minutes, when Silvina D’Elia, Rosario Lucchetti and Delfina Merino scored a trio of goals in just seven minutes to end the contest.

With seven points from their three games Argentina finished level with Australia at the summit, but go through to the next round as leaders by virtue of a superior goal difference. The nation’s next test comes against the team that finishes second in Pool A.

SRA’s Etchevehere says gov’t ‘responsible’ for inflation

The federal government is «responsible» for inflation, the President of the Argentine Rural Society (SRA) Luis Etchevehere has said, confirming the decision by the G6 group of business leaders to demand the unconstitutionality of the Anti-Hoarding Act recently approved by Congress.

“By this time now, everybody knows that the responsible of inflation is the one administrating the macro-economy of the country. The economic authority is the only one that could give a solution to the excess of monetary issuance. It is the minister of Economy who has to balance the fiscal accounts to have a stable currency,” Etchevehere said in statements to media this morning urging the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner administration to “end” inflation.

“If the government ended inflation, it would make a great service, because it is something that works against all Argentineans. The only two countries that have high inflation (rates) are Venezuela and Ukraine, but countries in our region have resolved this problem.”

Queried about the unconstitutionality presentation against the Anti-Hoarding Act that the G6 group will be filing this week, the SRA head defended the legal move considering the legislation “violates constitutional rights such as private property or the association right.”

“With this law, the State has the possibility to intervene in the productive process, to set minimum and maximum prices and decide the prohibition to export and import,” Etchevehere added.

“Over the past time, 135 meat cold storage chambers have been closed, 14,000 workers in the meat sector have been left in the streets; we lost 16 thousand cattle products. We have had the two worst wheat sowing of the past 100 years and almost 7 thousand milking yards have been closed,” he said.

Response

Meanwhile, members of the Argentine Economic Policy Center (CEPA) responded to the G6 move to have a court declare the unconstitutional nature of the law saying that “defenders of the local economic establishment is linked to the possibility of losing privileges” due to more government control that the new legislation allows.

“The law aims at putting on the same level those who have privileges and those who have not”, CEPA’s Julia Strada and Hernán Letcher pointed out adding that it also “defends consumers and those small and medium-sized entrepreneurs that are left to foot the bill when the economic power moves forward with concentration policies or pressing with abrupt devaluations”.

  • Balotelli sparks controversy for social media post

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli apologised today for his social media post which appeared to contain potentially racist and anti-Semitic references. The case is under investigation by the Football Association (FA), according to British media reports.

Balotelli, dubbed «Super Mario», made the post on his Instagram page yesterday describing the popular video games character as someone who «jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a jew.»

The rest of the text read: “Don’t be racist. Be like Mario. He’s an Italian plumber, created by Japanese people, who speaks English and looks like a Mexican.”
The 24-year-old Italian first responded to critics from his Twitter account: «My Mom is jewish so all of you shut up please,» he wrote. But later he deleted the post.

«I apologize if I’ve offended anyone,» Balotelli said on Twitter. «The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that out of context it may have the opposite effect.»

Liverpool said they will speak to the striker who signed from AC Milan in August.

«We are aware of the posting which has since been promptly deleted by the player,» a Liverpool spokesman told the BBC. «We will be speaking to the player about the issue.»

Former FA executive Simon Johnson, who is the chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council, said Balotelli should be punished.

«We abhor all forms of racism, wherever it is found,» he told The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

«We call upon the FA to investigate this offensive social media post and to take action if appropriate if we are to succeed in kicking racism out of football.»

Indec: wages grow faster than inflation

Wages have increased an average of 30 percent between January and October, meaning workers have improved their real salaries when compared to the 21.4 percent inflation registered during that period, the INDEC statistics bureau said yesterday in a report.

Private-sector workers saw wages increase 29 percent in the first 10 months of the year, while state workers experienced a 31.6 percent increase in monthly revenue. Meanwhile, unregistered workers experienced wage increases of 31.3 percent.

Compared to September, wages saw an increase of 1.6 percent, according to the report. The gains were felt more strongly among unregistered workers, who saw wages rise 2.03 percent, followed by a lower 1.8 percent for private-sector employees and 0.64 for state workers.

The figures were released at a time when several pro-government and opposition unions are asking for an end-of-year bonus and to be exempted from paying income tax. Most unions have agreed to wage increases of between 30 and 32 percent this year.

In a recent speech, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner said Argentine workers “have the highest wages of the region” and asked unions to “take care of what they have accomplished,” making a reference to the union demands.

Prices rose 1.2 percent in October, dropping 0.2 percentage points compared to September, according to the government’s consumer price index.

Senate committee approves Civil Code fast-track

The ruling Victory Front has succeeded in its intention to bring forward the implementation of the new Civil Code. The amendments to the law were first meant to become effective on January 1, 2016, but the project passed by a Senate committee would move it forward to August 1, 2015, just before the presidential elections.

FpV senator Aníbal Fernández, one of the authors of the initiative, highlighted specific rights contemplated in the new Code and argued “we could benefit from it earlier” if we move the date forward in the calendar.

Wife, daughter of IS leader detained in Lebanon

The Lebanese army detained a wife and daughter of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as they crossed from Syria nine days ago, security officials said today, in a setback to the group as it comes under increased military pressure.

The woman was identified as Saja al-Dulaimi, an Iraqi, by a Lebanese security official and a senior political source.

The Lebanese newspaper As-Safir reported she had been detained in coordination with «foreign intelligence».

The arrest is a blow to Baghdadi and could be used as a bargaining chip against his group, which has captured many foreign, Iraqi and Syrian prisoners and declared a caliphate in territory it has seized in Syria and Iraq.

A senior Lebanese security official said Baghdadi’s wife had been traveling with one of their daughters, contradicting earlier reports that it was his son. DNA tests were conducted to verify it was Baghdadi’s child, the official said.

They were detained in northern Lebanon. Investigators were questioning her at the Lebanese defense ministry. There was no immediate reaction from Islamic State websites.

Dulaimi was one of 150 women released from a Syrian government jail in March as part of a prisoner swap that led to the release of 13 nuns taken captive by al Qaeda-linked militants in Syria, according to media reports at the time.

A source with contacts with Iraqi intelligence said the captured woman was an Iraqi wife of Baghdadi’s, but could not confirm the name. There was cooperation between Iraqi and Lebanese authorities leading up to her capture, the source said.

Baghdadi has three wives, two Iraqis and one Syrian, according to tribal sources in Iraq.

Islamic State has seized wide areas of Iraq and Syria, Lebanon’s neighbor to the east.

The Lebanese security forces have cracked down on the group’s sympathizers and the intelligence services have been extra vigilant on the borders with Syria.

They have arrested over the past few months dozens of Islamic militants suspected of staging attacks to expand Islamic State influence in Lebanon.

A US-led alliance is seeking to roll back Islamic State’s territorial gains in Iraq and Syria. US President Barack Obama has vowed to «degrade and ultimately destroy» Baghdadi’s group, which is seeking to reshape the Middle East according to its radical vision of Islam.

Gov’t moves forward with HSBC Congressional Commision

Victory Front’s Senator Aníbal Fernández said that the government is moving forward today to set the Congressional Commission to look into HSBC’s alleged illegal plan to help 4,040 clients evade taxes. “We will meet today with (the head of the Lower House Budget Committee Roberto) Feletti to finalize details for the creation of the Commision,” he said.

The senator expressed the government’s intention to expedite the creation of the Commision to investigate the hidden Swiss banks accounts HSBC’s clients allegedly used to stash their money and evade taxes. “We will move forward to investigate those responsible,” Fernández said.

He explained that the Commision aims at “putting data into practice in order to determine who evaded taxes” and “identifying agents, lawyers, accountants, economists” involved in the scheme.

Fernández stressed the need to “move forward” with the inquiry and to make its findings public.

    New Civil Code

The senator also defended the initiative he and senator Miguel Angel Pichetto launched to bring forward the entry into force of the recently-passed ammendment of the country’s Civil and Commercial Code, which will be discussed this afternoon in the Lower House’s Constitutional Affairs Commission.

“Why should we wait any longer for citizens to be allowed a better exercise of their rights?,” Fernández asked, rhetorically. The law is set to entry into force by January 2016 but the Victory Front’s senators have proposed its implementation starting next month.

Obama urges Congress to approve US$6bn for Ebola fight

US president Barack Obama has urged Congress to approve US$6.18 billion to help fight the Ebola outbreak, reminding them that even though the story has faded from the headlines, the battle against the virus is far from over.

«Every hotspot is an ember that if not contained can become a new fire, so we cannot let down our guard even for a minute,» Obama said. «And we can’t just fight this epidemic. We have to extinguish it.»

Obama toured a lab at the National Institutes of Health, where a team of researchers last week published promising results from the first phase of a research trial for an Ebola vaccine.

Most of Obama’s request is aimed at the immediate response to the disease. But the package also includes US$1.5 billion in contingency funds – money that could become a target if lawmakers look for cuts, said Sam Worthington, president of InterAction, an alliance of US non-governmental aid groups.

While lawmakers recognize that the United States had to take action to arrest Ebola, some are wary of giving the administration too much leeway.

«I think there is less understanding of the need to stay in it for the long run and to build the capacity of countries to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future,» Worthington said in an interview.

Obama noted that NIH scientists first began work on research that led to the potential Ebola vaccine in 1999, long before the worst outbreak of the disease on record, which has afflicted more than 17,000 people since March, killing more than 6,000.

He said the United States needs to continue to fund basic research and help nations such as Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone build better public health systems so that the world can quickly contain future disease outbreaks.

«It is a smart investment for us to make. It’s not just insurance. It is knowing that down the road we’re going to continue to have problems like this, particularly in a globalized world where you move from one side of the world to the other in a day,» Obama said.

The Obama administration came under fire in September after a series of missteps with a man who traveled to Dallas from Liberia and later died of Ebola. Two nurses contracted the disease while caring for the man.

Screening and treatment procedures have since been tightened. There are now 35 US hospitals equipped to deal with Ebola patients, up from three before the outbreak.

Poisoned teacher now targeted in alleged abuse cases

After denouncing a student had allegedly tried to poison him by putting cockroach killer liquid inside his water bottle, teacher Miguel Ángel Porro is being now targeted by accusations saying he assaulted students in the past.

Yesterday, Mr. Porro held a press conference briefing the press on how one of his students at a public school in the Buenos Aires province locality of Villa Ballester where he gives classes had allegedly tried to poison him.

However, a revelation by former student of the Dramatic Art School where she was also the head of the Students Center Mariana Pizarro has opened new windows in the case.

“He was violent, libidinous and threatening. They took him away (from our class) but he was sent to a different area because he was friends with the headmaster. When I saw that guy in television I went in despair, I started shaking because I could not believe that he would be still teaching,” Mariana told media today adding that Mr. Porro would always tell his students how proud he was of a role he played in the “La noche de los lápices” movie – “The night of the pencils” in English, a film based on the real kidnapping and killing of students in the BA province capital city of La Plata during Argentina’s 1976-1983 civil-military dictatorship.

In the movie, he played an officer who abuses María Clara Ciocchini, one of the students who remains disappeared.

“He was bragging about the scene he had played as a military who abuses María Clara Ciocchini. He told us he had enjoyed doing it,” Ms. Pizarro said.

“This Mr. is very violent, I left his classes feeling sick to my stomach, wanting to throw up, feeling dirty. I think that all the people who were victims (of him) have to come out and tell what happened. It is very important to me that he is not dead and that he responds to Justice for the crimes he has committed,” she assured.

“Porro took young woman to his place, in the car, where he sexually stimulated them, locked them up and told them that they were actually enjoying it but that they were not allowing themselves to enjoy, that they would be better actresses when they liberated themselves. 19 years ago, justice was not the same as today, abuse and gender violence cases did not receive so much importance.”

New judicial setback puts Moreno closer to standing trial

A Buenos Aires City court has rejected an appeal by the defence of Guillermo Moreno with the ex domestic trade secretary now closer to be sitting on the dock to be judge for abuse of authority in an oral and public trial.

The 2nd courtroom of the Federal Court ruled today as “inadmissible” an appeal seeking to have the decision to send Moreno to trial by the Federal Court of Penal Cassation revised.

Current economic attaché in Argentina’s embassy in Rome Moreno has been prosecuted for “abuse of authority” in a case involving fines he sanctioned with private-sector consultant agencies for disclosing inflation data that contradicted figures by the INDEC statistics bureau.

Moreno’s legal representatives will be able to turn to the Federal Court of Penal Cassation issuing a remedy of complaint. Still, today’s ruling has also paved the way for the judge to send the case to an oral court.

Gov’t calls for a deep investigation on HSBC Swiss accounts

Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich stressed the importance of moving forward in the inquiry on HSBC for allegedly helping citizens and companies stash their money in secret Swiss banks accounts and called for a “frontal fight against tax evasion.”

Following accusations by the AFIP tax bureau, the government has launched an initiative to create a congressional commission to look into HSBC’s alleged illegal plan to help 4,040 clients evade taxes. The chief of ministers said that a thorough investigation is “essential” and scolded “those who have double standards and criticise the government while they hide their money in Swiss accounts.”

Speaking at a joint press conference with Health Minister Juan Manzur, Capitanich highlighted the case as an example of the government’s effort in “guaranteeing a frontal fight against tax evasion” in order to ensure the state’s ability to collect “strategic resources” for the benefit of society.

“We are talking about exorbitant figures,” Capitanich said. “An estimated 62 billion pesos.”

The official denied any plans by the Executive branch to reform the financial entities law and urged judges to “assume their responsibility” in the case.

Egypt court hands down 185 death sentences for police station attack

An Egyptian judge has sentenced 185 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death over an attack on a police station near Cairo last year in which 12 policemen were killed.

The ruling is preliminary and subject to a lengthy appeals process. It also goes to the country’s top religious authority for approval although his opinion is not binding.

The sentence comes days after another court dropped charges against Hosni Mubarak over the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ended his 30-year rule.

The attack on the Kerdasa police station took place on Aug. 14, 2013, the day that Egyptian security forces cleared two Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo, killing hundreds of people in one of the bloodiest episodes in Egypt’s modern history.

Of those sentenced, 151 are in custody, with the others being tried in absentia, a judicial source said.

Egyptian authorities have rounded up thousands of Brotherhood members since the army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July last year, following protests against his turbulent one-year rule.

Egyptian courts have since sentenced hundreds to death in mass trials that have been condemned by human rights groups.

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the army chief who orchestrated Morsi’s removal, went on to win a presidential election in May. His critics say he has steadily rolled back the freedoms won in the 2011 uprising but many Egyptians appear willing to tolerate those curbs, seeing them as the price to pay to restore stability and economic growth.

None of those sentenced since Mursi’s ouster have been executed so far.

US Senate confirms Noah Mamet as new ambassador to Argentina

The United States Upper House has approved the designation of Noah Mamet as new ambassador to Argentina by 50 votes to 43. Mamet will replace Vilma Martínez, who left the post in mid 2013. Business attaché Kevin Sullivan has been filling the role since.

Noah Bryson Mamet is 43 years old, a veteran Democratic fund-raiser and consultant. He was nominated by US president Barack Obama after Martínez left the embassy in 2013, and was summoned by the Senate Foreign Relations committee in February 2014, where he defended his nomination saying he will work to “deepen bilateral ties between the countries.”

Republicans strongly objected his nomination for months, as Mamet has no experience with Latin American issues, has never been to Argentina and does not speak Spanish.

He is expected to arrive in Argentina in January 2015.

As a fund-raiser, Mamet collaborated with Obama’s 2012 campaign, as well as with former US president Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Currently, he is the president of Noah Mamet & Associates, a consulting firm that focuses on business and politics in Los Angeles, California. He is also member of the Pacific Council of International Politics, and of the United States Council of Young Political Leaders.

Mujica: ‘I won’t ask Tabaré for anything’

Uruguay’s Vázquez will have freedom to choose own path, says current president, after decisive victory

MONTEVIDEO — New president-elect Tabaré Vázquez will be free to choose his own political path, José “Pepe” Mujica said yesterday, as Uruguay’s popular current head of state promised not to ask for any favours from his predecessor, and soon-to-be successor.

On Sunday night, Vázquez, who served as president from 2005-2010, scored an overwhelming victory in Argentina’s neighbouring country, extending the Broad Front’s 10-year control of the presidency.

After final results were tallied overnight, the statistics spoke for themselves. Despite awful weather conditions and rain by the bucketload, turnout in Uruguay was 88.57 percent for the runoff, reported Uruguay’s Electoral Council.

A final count of ballots put Vázquez on 53.6 percent, meaning he received nearly 300,000 votes more than his rival, Luis Lacalle Pou of the National Party, who scored 41.1 percent. That margin is considerable, considering the total electorate was around 2.6 million of Uruguay’s 3.5-million population.

An unofficial tally from the Electoral Council revealed the Broad Front ‘s dominance even further. The coalition won in 12 of the country’s departments, taking all but one of those on the outer rim of the country, compared to the seven, mostly interior departments taken by the opposition National Party.

In Salto, the country’s second-highest populated area, the president scored his largest victory, taking over 58 percent of the vote; Montevideo followed closely behind, where the Broad Front took 57.6 percent of the vote. Projections showed the coalition had also won in Artigas, Canelones, Cerro Largo, Colonia, Paysandú, Río Negro, Rivera, Rocha, San José and Soriano.

Another department, Florida, may also follow, potentially bringing the total to 13, with early projections putting Lacalle Pou’s party just 448 votes ahead in the region, with around 2,000 votes still yet to be tallied. The National’s strongest performance was in Tacuarembó, where they scored just under 50 percent.

Vázquez’s attention will now turn to governing, with the make-up of the new Cabinet the key question on everyone’s lips. While some names have been put forward, such as Daniel Astori for Economy Minister, many positions remain up in the air.

    ‘A fluid transition’

The current president, whose larger-than-life personality has dominated both internal and external perceptions of Uruguay’s politics, vowed yesterday that he would not interfere — Mujica said yesterday he won’t even ask Vázquez “for the portero (doorman position).”

“If there’s somebody who won’t ask for anything, it’s me. I’ve had the experience of being president and it really annoyed me when people would demand something in exchange” (for their support or help).

He also considered that it is crucial to give the new president “the maximum amount of freedom and guarantees so that he can carry out a fluid transition.”

“We won’t think twice about telling him that he has our support or when we need to give him a different perspective,” Mujica said.

The president said he will be a “strong lawmaker” but admitted however he is aware of his political clout. “People show it to me when I walk down the street,” he said but underlined that his power is not “a gift from God.” It is the result of “years of political activism,” he declared.

Mujica is certainly influential — he will likely leave office with record approval ratings.

Vázquez has promised inclusive governance, saying Sunday night: “I promise to work my utmost but I cannot, should not and do not want to work alone, I want to count on all Uruguayans.”

Though Vázquez is expected to name his Cabinet this week and despite a brief encounter with the president at a hotel in Montevideo on Sunday night, he will not meet with Mujica for at least the next 10 days, First Lady and Senator Lucia Topolansky revealed yesterday. The current president will today travel to Guayaquil in Ecuador for a Unasur summit, where Uruguay will receive the pro-tempore presidency. He will then travel onto Quito and finally, Veracruz, in Mexico.

    ‘Vibrant relationship’

After a wave of congratulatory remarks arrived in Montevideo from across Latin America the previous night, US Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday paid tribute to Uruguay’s political class and the “vibrant relationship” Washington holds with the South American country.

“We hope to work with the elected President Vázquez and his government to advance our bilateral relationship,” Kerry said in a statement. “Our cooperation and long-standing commitment to Uruguay and the Uruguayan people will continue to thrive with the new government.”

The Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS) José Miguel Insulza also paid tribute to the high turnout of voters, high level of political debate during the campaign and the “constructive spirit” of Uruguay’s political parties.

But despite the goodwill between the two leaders, there are potentially some sticking-points.

One is the controversial marijuana legislation, introduced by Mujica, which has captured the world’s attention. Vázquez has indicated that he will keep the law, but he is clearly less enthusiastic about it. He has said he may alter facets of it, depending on its impact on society.

One sticking-point thus far has been the proposed sale of marijuana through pharamacies, which Vázquez considers inappropriate.

Vázquez now has three months to sort out his team and his priorities before starting his term on March 1 — for his part, the president-elect has promised to focus on crime and education.

‘Evaded money would pay for 27 years of vaccines’

President Cristina Fernández has hit out at Argentines holding 4,040 accounts in a Swiss bank, affirming that the funds kept outside the country could be used to make great improvements in the local health structure.

The head of state took to Twitter in her first comment on the situation since the AFIP revenue agency revealed that the HSBC bank had been accused of tax evasion and illicit association, charges related to the discovery of the foreign accounts.

With that money, CFK said, the nation could «assure 70 years of treatment for the 42,000 HIV patients that the state provides with free medication,» as well as funding the entire national vaccine program for no less than 27 years.

Also in the health field, Cristina estimated that for the same amount «200 hospitals of 140 beds, equipped with the latest technology could be built, at a cost of 300 million pesos.»

On a more positive note, the president highlighted the effect on public health caused by the government’s extensive national vaccination program, that was expanded this year to include the rotavirus. According to Cristina, since 2012 «free and obligatory vaccinations against pneumonia have reduced by 47 percent hospital admissions for under-fives.»
