US Senate confirms Noah Mamet as new ambassador to Argentina

The United States Upper House has approved the designation of Noah Mamet as new ambassador to Argentina by 50 votes to 43. Mamet will replace Vilma Martínez, who left the post in mid 2013. Business attaché Kevin Sullivan has been filling the role since.

Noah Bryson Mamet is 43 years old, a veteran Democratic fund-raiser and consultant. He was nominated by US president Barack Obama after Martínez left the embassy in 2013, and was summoned by the Senate Foreign Relations committee in February 2014, where he defended his nomination saying he will work to “deepen bilateral ties between the countries.”

Republicans strongly objected his nomination for months, as Mamet has no experience with Latin American issues, has never been to Argentina and does not speak Spanish.

He is expected to arrive in Argentina in January 2015.

As a fund-raiser, Mamet collaborated with Obama’s 2012 campaign, as well as with former US president Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Currently, he is the president of Noah Mamet & Associates, a consulting firm that focuses on business and politics in Los Angeles, California. He is also member of the Pacific Council of International Politics, and of the United States Council of Young Political Leaders.
