Brazilian soccer legend Pelé’s health continue to improve and he has been taken off intensive care, the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein hospital said.
The 74-year-old three-time World Cup champion was hospitalized on November 24 and put on kidney support treatment for an urinary tract infection.
The hospital said he has been transferred to “semi-intensive” care and that he is off the hemodialysis treatment that was needed to support his only kidney, although another evaluation will be done tomorrow.
Pelé is “lucid”, feeding well and under good hemodynamic and respiratory conditions, the hospital added.
The soccer idol underwent surgery just over two weeks ago to remove kidney stones.
Pelé, who was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has struggled with a series of health problems over the past decade. He has had emergency eye surgery for a detached retina, and a hip replacement.
Known in Brazil as the «King of Soccer», he played in four World Cups and scored more than 1,000 goals during his career.
