Caen un subcomisario y otros cuatro oficiales por un crimen

A comienzos de la temporada de verano de 2011, hace casi exactamente un año, una seguidilla de diez robos en Valeria del Mar –muy similar a la que se vive hoy en la Costa– puso en alerta a las autoridades locales que, para colmo de males, estaban esperando la visita del gobernador Daniel Scioli. Fue en ese contexto que la muerte de un ladrón –en un tiroteo policial durante un asalto ocurrido en la noche del 2 de enero, ya en 2011– fue usada por la Dirección de Investigaciones de Villa Gesell para exhibir el supuesto éxito de sus “tareas de prevención” en medio de la ola de inseguridad .

Pero nada fue como se dijo y difundió. Luego de un año de investigaciones, se determinó que ese violento robo había sido en realidad una trampa policial armada con un “buchón” (el ladrón que, por error, terminó muerto) y una prostituta (supuesta dueña de la casa asaltada) para mostrar efectividad . Quien reveló todo fue otro asaltante, que logró escapar del tiroteo y que se presentó a la Justicia para contar todo lo que sabía de los arreglos entre sus compañero muerto y el jefe de la DDI de Gesell. Habló por una sencilla razón: tenía miedo de que los policías involucrados lo mataran .

El caso explotó ayer de manera contundente. Por orden de la Justicia de Dolores, cuatro grupos de Asuntos Internos de la Bonaerense detuvieron al subcomisario Claudio Arnouk (ex jefe de la DDI de Gesell y actual jefe de la brigada de San Miguel), a dos oficiales principales, a un inspector y a un subteniente que habían sido sus subordinados y actualmente trabajaban en la zona de Morón. Según pudo confirmar Clarín , también cayó presa una mujer: sería una prostituta que se hizo pasar por víctima del robo y que vivía en la casa supuestamente asaltada, sobre la calle Espora al 1400. Todos se negaron a declarar ante el fiscal de Dolores que lleva el caso.

A los seis –aunque con distintos tipo de responsabilidad, según las fuentes consultadas– se los acusa de uno de los delitos mas graves del Código Penal, “homicidio calificado”. En palabras mas sencillas: se les imputa armar o participar en una trampa (el falso robo) que terminó con la muerte del ladrón Andrés Osvaldo Lescano (38), quien recibió cuatro balazos .

Lescano era informante de policial, al punto de que figuraba en varios procedimientos como “testigo”. La investigación determinó que vivía en Quilmes, pero que la Policía de la Costa lo llevaba hasta allí para que hiciera “trabajos” . Es más, parte de los policías detenidos ayer son investigados también por el robo (y reventa) de cinco cuatriciclos .

“El que tenía que morir era el otro ladrón, pero algo salió mal. Lescano salió de la casa por la puerta equivocada y lo balearon a él”, confió una fuente del caso. Y aseguró que en Valeria del Mar se cuenta que Lescano, a los gritos, trató de identificarse pero le tiraron igual . Una versión no confirmada indicaba también que fue subido a la camioneta policial con un solo disparo de bala y llegó al hospital, moribundo, con cuatro .

El falso robo en cuestión ocurrió sobre la medianoche del 2 de enero de 2011. Las informaciones oficiales indicaron entonces que dos ladrones entraron a una casa de avenida Espora al 1400, maniataron a su dueña y, cuando escapaban, se toparon con la Policía (que había sido advertida por un vecino, via 911, de movimientos extraños). Un ladrón (Lescano) murió y otro escapó, dijeron.

A la prensa se le informó que el ladrón que escapó nunca fue detenido. Ayer se supo que, en realidad, 48 horas después que mataran a su compañero el hombre se presentó en la fiscalía de Gesell y contó que todo había sido armado . Según una fuente consultada por Clarín habría asegurado que ni siquiera habían ido a robar sino a buscar unas armas por indicación de policías de la DDI. Desde que declaró (bajo reserva de identidad) vive resguardado en el Sistema de Protección a Testigos de la Procuración de la Corte Bonaerense .

El escándalo del falso robo también terminó de complicar la situación del entonces titular de la fiscalía descentralizada de la zona, Cristian Centurión. Su desempeño está siendo investigado por un fiscal de Mar del Plata. Ante las primeras denuncias en su contra fue trasladado a Dolores. Y, según confirmó Clarín , renunció a su cargo hace unas semanas.

Cae banda dedicada al robo y desgüace de automóviles en Florencio Varela

Los sujetos «trabajaban» en un taller mecánico ubicado en el sur del conurbano bonaerense, donde llevaban los rodados sustraídos y eran desmantelados y luego de adulterar la numeración, eran vendidos en el mercado negro.

Tres sujetos fueron detenidos en la localidad bonaerense de Florencio Varela sospechados de conformar una banda dedicada a la sustracción de automóviles de alta gama, informaron fuentes policiales a Online-911.

Durante el procedimiento, que estuvo a cargo de personal de la DDI Quilmes, los uniformados incautaron dos vehículos y autopartes.

Los detectives estaban tras los pasos de una organización delictiva que «se dedicaba al robo, a veces a mano armada, de costosos vehículos, para posteriormente adulterar sus numeraciones» indicó una fuente de la investigación quien agregó que «los delincuentes cortaban los automóviles para vender en el mercado negro sus autopartes».

El cabecilla de la banda era el propietario de un taller, ubicado en calle 54 entre 73 y 74 de Florencio Varela, donde se realizaban las maniobras ilícitas.

Durante la investigación, los pesquisas realizaron tareas de vigilancia encubierta en el domicilio mencionado, donde en las últimas horas interceptaron un vehículo marca VW Gol que egresaba del inmueble cuyos ocupantes de 38, 27 y 29 años de edad, fueron apresados.

Posteriormente la policía allanó el taller donde se secuestró un Renault Sandero, 20 puertas, 10 capots, 15 ópticas, 5 tapas de baúl y elementos de corte.

Por último, se determinó que uno de los individuos apresados, de 38 años, poseía pedido de captura activa por “Robo agravado” y por “Tenencia de estupefacientes con fines de comercialización”, además de tener antecedentes por delitos de robo.

Teo Gutiérrez hizo dos goles en la primera práctica de fútbol del ciclo Basile. En el segundo, la picó por arriba del arquero y festejó como en un partido por los puntos… El cierre ideal para un día en el que confirmaron que sigue en la Academia después de tanta polémica.

Basile lo recibió el jueves y lo motivó durante media hora en el vestuario del Cilindro, antes de su primera práctica del año, un día después de que sus compañeros empezaran la pretemporada. Teófilo Gutiérrez escuchó atentamente y este viernes le devolvió la confianza con Coco con su marca registrada: goles. El colombiano hizo los dos en la victoria por 2-1 de los titulares sobre los suplentes. El cierre perfecto para una jornada en la que se había confirmado su continuidad en la Academia.

Teo metió el primero de penal y con el segundo motivó la sonrisa del Coco. Después del pase de Gio Moreno, entró en el área y picó la pelota, justo por arriba del arquero De Olivera. El colombiano, como hace en cada gol, levantó su índice y miró el cielo. ¿Qué hubiera pasado si en las tribunas del Cilindro estaban los hinchas que lo recibieron con indiferencia el jueves? Hay muchos que lo van a resistir por sus polémicas declaraciones abriendo la puerta para irse a otro equipo.

Pero por ahora Gutiérrez va a seguir con la camiseta de Racing. Así lo había anunciado Roberto Ayala, el secretario técnico del club, que contó la positiva reunión con el presidente Cogorno y lo confirmó dentro del plantel de Basile. Efraín Pachón, el representante del delantero, también dijo que habían llegado a un acuerdo. Mientras no lleguen ofertas concretas desde el exterior se queda en la Academia. Y si la mete hasta en los entrenamientos va a lograr que la gente lo perdone.

Former Argentina coach Pekerman takes Colombia reins

Former Argentina coach José Néstor Pekerman has been put in charge of Colombia’s bid to end a 16-year wait to reach the World Cup finals in Brazil in 2014.
Pekerman, who steered his country to the 2006 World Cup quarter-finals in Germany, was named on Thursday to replaced Leonel Álvarez, sacked following Colombia’s 2-1 home defeat by Argentina in their last qualifier in November.
«The Colombian Football Federation’s (FCF) executive committee, headed by its president Luis Bedoya, has reached an agreement in the last few hours for Argentine José Néstor Pekerman to become the new coach of the senior Colombia team,» a FCF statement said.
«In the coming hours we expect the definitive signing of the contract that will link him to the national team that is taking part in the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014.»
Colombia, who have not reached the World Cup finals since 1998 in France, began their 2014 campaign well with a 2-1 away win over Bolivia at high altitude in La Paz in October but Álvarez’s team then dropped five points at home in a 1-1 draw with Venezuela and the loss to Argentina.
Pekerman, a former Argentinos Juniors midfielder who ended his playing career in Colombia with Independiente Medellin at the age of 28 after a knee injury, made his name as coach of Argentina’s under-20 side winning three World Youth championships between 1995 and 2001.
His 2006 Argentina side, which included Juan Román Riquelme as midfield general and a teenaged Lionel Messi making occasional appearances off the bench, lost on penalties to hosts Germany after a 1-1 draw in their Berlin quarter-final.
Pekerman has coached at club level in Argentina, Chile and Mexico.
Copa America holders Uruguay lead the South American World Cup qualifying group jointly with Argentina and Venezuela on seven points each.
Ecuador and Chile have six points, Colombia and Paraguay four, Peru three and Bolivia one.

SEQUÍA….Trigo: liberan un piso de 6 millones de toneladas para exportar este año

El ministro de Agricultura, Norberto Yauhar, anunció ayer la firma de un “nuevo esquema de comercialización de trigo” con cerealeras y cooperativas exportadoras que propone la apertura de hasta seis millones de toneladas del cereal durante el 2012, y más de la mitad de este cupo durante febrero próximo.
“Las pautas han sido las conversadas con los distintos sectores: armamos un esquema que le permita al Estado facilitar el control (de la venta interna y exterior) a través de las declaraciones juradas que deberá presentar el productor ante la Unidad de Coordinación y Evaluación de Subsidios al Consumo Interno (Ucesci)”, indicó Yauhar.
El titular de la cartera agrícola formuló estos conceptos al término de un encuentro con el secretario de Comercio, Guillermo Moreno, y directivos de empresas exportadoras.
De esta forma, el Gobierno nacional asegura siete millones de toneladas para el consumo interno. A partir de esa línea, se liberará el excedente para su libre comercialización.
“El mecanismo es el resguardo de los siete primeros millones de toneladas que la Argentina necesita para su alimentación interna y todo el excedente queda a total disposición de los productores para que lo puedan comercializar de la forma que ellos quieran”, agregó Yauhar.
“Tratamos de priorizar en este esquema al pequeño y mediano productor”, enfatizó el ministro al resaltar que estuvieron presentes en toda la negociación las grandes empresas, pero también los órganos que representan a los eslabones más pequeños de la cadena.
La primera evaluación del stock de trigo se realizará el 31 de enero de cada año, con la liberación parcial de la primera etapa, y la segunda etapa se extiende hasta el 28 de febrero, con los datos de la finalización de la cosecha con la liberación de todo el remanente.
Hay en este esquema una franja del trigo de bajas proteínas que tendrá una salida prácticamente automática. Según la Bolsa de Cereales de Buenos Aires, la cosecha de trigo será de 14 millones de toneladas.

Dutch citizen to plead guilty for murder in Peru

Dutch citizen Joran Van der Sloot went on trial today for killing a young Peruvian woman in 2010, five years to the day after a US teenager vanished on the island of Aruba after spending time with him.
Van der Sloot, who was also arrested but never charged in the 2005 disappearance in Aruba of 18-year-old Alabama native Natalee Holloway, has confessed to killing 21-year-old business student Stephany Flores after meeting her in a casino in Lima.
His defense lawyer said on Friday he would plead guilty.
Peruvian criminal law specialists have said prosecutors were initially expected to try for a sentence of life in prison against Van der Sloot. But they had to scale back their plans and are expected to ask for a 30-year term because of sentencing guidelines for murders in which robbery could be the primary motive.
If convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison, Van der Sloot would be eligible for parole after serving 10 years.
Peruvian police said Flores, a highly-skilled poker player and the daughter of a wealthy businessman, was robbed and killed on May 30, 2010, exactly five years after Holloway disappeared.
Van der Sloot has told police he strangled Flores after he found her looking at his laptop computer in his hotel room. The laptop contained emails about Holloway’s death.
Van der Sloot, reportedly 24 years old, fled to Chile after Flores’ death but was arrested there and returned to Peru for questioning.
The murder probe brought renewed attention to the case of Holloway, who vanished during a high school graduation trip in the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba, where Van der Sloot was living.
Van der Sloot was arrested twice in the Holloway case but he was never charged due to a lack of evidence. Holloway’s family has criticized Dutch authorities for not making more progress in the case.

La crisis económica obliga a Obama a reducir el gasto militar

El presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, anunció ayer un plan para hacer “adelgazar” las fuerzas militares de su país y aclaró que no significa aplicar reducciones de presupuesto sin sentido sino convertir el actual mastodonte en una maquinaria de guerra “ágil y flexible” , capaz de mostrar la “superioridad” norteamericana en cualquier lugar del mundo.

“Sin dudas, algunos van a decir que los recortes son demasiado grandes, y otros van a decir que son demasiado pequeños”, dijo Obama durante una inusual aparición en el Pentágono.

Acosado por la crisis económica, Obama ordenó una serie de recortes presupuestarios en los programas de Defensa poco después de haber entrado a la Casa Blanca, por unos 489.000 millones de dólares en 10 años.

Ahora, el presidente adelantó que “en las próximas semanas” se conocerán más detalles sobre los presupuestos del Pentágono para los próximos años. Fuentes del gobierno dijeron a la agencia Reuters que se está considerando una reducción de entre un 10 y 15% de las fuerzas del Ejército y la Marina en la próxima década, equivalente a decenas de miles de soldados.

“Al mirar más allá de las guerras en Irak y Afganistán –y el fin de la construcción nacional a largo plazo con gran presencia militar– seremos capaces de garantizar nuestra seguridad con menos fuerzas terrestres convencionales”, dijo. Así, EE.UU. ya no podrá librar dos guerras simultáneas y extensas como en Afganistán e Irak.

No es un secreto aquí que Obama tiene una visión diferente de lo que deben ser las fuerzas armadas. Pero, si bien algunas de sus políticas –como la aceleración de la salida de Irak– molestaron a los jefes militares, Obama mantiene una muy buena sintonía con el Pentágono y con el aparato militar en general, incluídos los fabricantes de armas y equipos.

De hecho, tal como se ocupó de recordar en su encuentro con la prensa, el presupuesto militar de la gestión Obama incluso supera el gasto de los últimos años de la administración Bush.

Ante los periodistas, Obama dejó en claro que piensa recortar fuertemente en programas nacidos a la sombra de la Guerra Fría, “así podremos invertir en las capacidades que necesitamos para el futuro, como la inteligencia, vigilancia y reconocimiento, el anti-terrorismo, contrarrestar armas de destrucción masiva y la habilidad de operar en ambientes adonde nuestros adversarios traten de negarnos acceso”, señaló.

“Entonces sí, nuestras fuerzas armadas serán más ‘delgadas’, pero el mundo debe saber que Estados Unidos va a mantener su superioridad militar con fuerzas que serán ágiles, flexibles y listas para todo el rango de contingencias y amenazas”, indicó el presidente.

“Creo que es la primera vez que se articula algo como esto” para modernizar las fuerzas armadas, comentó el coronel retirado Jack Jacobs, analista militar de la cadena televisiva MSNBC. Según el ex oficial, evidentemente Obama está dispuesto a profundizar el “cambio de foco”, sacándolo de Europa y Rusia y apuntando hacia Oriente Medio y Asia.

De hecho, durante su visita a Canberra en noviembre último, Obama anunció un acuerdo para el despliegue de hasta 2.500 marines en Australia, cerca de China.

“Vamos a reforzar nuestra presencia en la zona de Asia-Pacífico, y las reducciones de presupuesto no se realizarán a expensas de esa región crítica”, explicó Obama en el Pentágono. También “vamos a seguir inviertiendo en nuestras sociedades y alianzas clave, incluyendo la OTAN”, tranquilizó el presidente.

Esta transformación y ajuste en la defensa viene despertando críticas de parte de los republicanos, tradicionalmente relacionados con las jerarquías militares y las empresas del sector de las armas. Y también se escucharon reacciones desde la izquierda.

“Las reducciones propuestas para los próximos cinco años representan una declinación real de apenas el 4% en términos reales o ajustados por inflación”, dijo Catherine Lutz, de la universidad Brown y directora del website CostOfWar.org. “Y el presupuesto del Pentágono seguirá siendo más grande que en la última década”, agregó.

MENOS EMPLEO … Swift confirmó el cierre de su planta en Venado Tuerto

Directivos del frigorífico Swift comunicaron «la decisión de cerrar la planta» en la ciudad, con lo que se abre un «panorama complicadísimo», ya que está en juego la fuente laboral de 500 personas en una localidad de poco más de 80 mil habitantes. El gobierno nacional había intentado una solución que no funcionó.
El intendente de la localidad santafesina de Venado Tuerto, José Luis Freyre, señaló que directivos del frigorífico Swift le comunicaron «la decisión de cerrar la planta».

Las declaraciones de Freyre tuvieron lugar al término de una reunión que mantuvo en la ciudad de Buenos Aires con directivos del frigorífico JBS Swift de capitales brasileños y funcionarios del Ministerio de Trabajo de la Nación.

«La empresa nos comunicó la decisión de cerrar la planta en nuestra ciudad» , dijo Freyre, para agregar que «el panorama es complicadísimo» y que el encuentro se desarrolló «con un alto grado de tensión al analizar un tema tan complejo como éste, en el que está en juego la fuente laboral de más de 500 personas, y por ende el bienestar de sus familias».

En declaraciones formuladas al portal rosarino Punto Biz, el intendente dijo que «la gente de la empresa nos contó como es el tema del flujo de inversiones y los costos, lo que están perdiendo por el mantenimiento de la planta de Venado y las otras en las que tienen problemas. Nosotros les hablamos del problema de las familias que no van a tener un salario».

Después, en tono crítico el intendente aseguró que «nadie del Swift levantó el teléfono hace seis meses, ocho meses o un año para informarnos que esta situación era inminente o podía darse. La empresa nos comunicó la decisión de cerrar la planta y lo que estamos peleando son alternativas para mantenerla abierta, transitoriamente, hasta que aparezcan otras opciones».

Swift replantó su presencia en la provincia de Santa Fe ante la fuerte bajas en las exportaciones de carne vacuna y sus dificultades para acumular stock. La planta de Venado Tuerto estaba casi completamente abocada a la venta al exterior.

Hasta el momento, los voceros de la empresa no se mostraron disponibles para hacer comentarios oficiales al respecto.

Swift Armour SA es propiedad del gigante brasileño JBS Friboi y se dedica a la producción de carne cruda, congelada, enlatadas y procesados tales como salchichas, hamburguesas y fiambres.

Accounts Emerge in South Sudan of 3,000 Deaths in Ethnic Violence

NAIROBI, Kenya — More than 3,000 villagers were massacred in the recent burst of communal violence in South Sudan, local officials said Thursday, with the fledging South Sudanese government, which just won its independence six months ago, seemingly unable to stem the bloodshed.

If the death toll is confirmed — United Nations officials and South Sudanese Army officers have yet to do that, saying they were still collecting information from the conflict zone — this would be one of the deadliest clashes in South Sudan in recent memory.

In the past two weeks, United Nations aircraft had been tracking an unusually large column of 6,000 to 8,000 heavily armed fighters from the Lou Nuer ethnic group as it advanced toward the town of Pibor, cutting a swath of destruction across the savanna. Pibor is the hometown of the Lou Nuer’s traditional rival, the Murle, and the two groups have been locked in a tit-for-tat cattle rustling feud for years, with the death toll steadily rising each round.

According to Joshua Konyi, the commissioner of Pibor County and a Murle, 2,182 women and children and 959 men were killed, 1,293 children were abducted and 375,186 cows were stolen.

“We’ve been counting the bodies,” Mr. Konyi said by telephone from Pibor on Thursday night. “It’s really a genocide. If you come, you will see.”

He said Lou Nuer fighters had mercilessly hunted down civilians who were cowering in the bush. Other Murle leaders said hundreds of women had been chased into a river, where they drowned.

Earlier this week, United Nations officials had a much lower estimate, describing a death toll “in the tens, if not the hundreds” and saying that several corpses had already been unearthed. United Nations peacekeepers had tried to stop the fighters from storming the town of Pibor, but when it was clear that the peacekeepers and government soldiers were vastly outnumbered, Pibor’s residents were advised to flee. As many as 50,000 people scattered across the area. At first, United Nations officials believed that the early warnings had saved many lives.

“At this stage, it’s very difficult to get an accurate picture,” Kouider Zerrouk, a United Nations spokesman in South Sudan, said Thursday. “We’re not in a position to confirm any figures, and we’re in the process of assessing their validity.”

The Pibor area is one of the most rugged and isolated parts of South Sudan, surrounded by thick forests and swamps. With thousands of fighters still roaming around and many roads inaccessible, United Nations officials said they would not know the full extent of the violence for several more days.

South Sudan’s military spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, said, “I’m sure many people died.” But the army, like the United Nations, was waiting for more details, he said.

“I feel bad,” Colonel Aguer said. Referring to the South Sudanese Army, he continued: “It is regrettable that the SPLA couldn’t stop this. This region is in conflict. This is not the first incident of this kind, and it will not be the last.”

The cattle-rustling tradition in this part of South Sudan goes back generations. Both the Murle and the Lou Nuer prize cows and often lionize the young warriors who steal them. Years ago, the warriors clashed with spears. Now, they use AK-47s.

Last year, the Lou Nuer attacked several Murle villages, stole cattle and killed hundreds. The Murle responded by attacking several Lou Nuer villages, stealing cattle and killing hundreds. When asked why so few soldiers were defending Pibor when it was clear an enormous force of Lou Nuer fighters was headed that way, he replied, “It’s a long story.”

He elaborated that government troops were stretched thin across South Sudan, especially because of all the tensions along the oil-rich boundary between South Sudan and its northern neighbor, Sudan. The border has yet to be demarcated and could prime a major conflict between the two nations. Before South Sudan seceded from Sudan in July, the South Sudanese had been fighting a guerrilla war for independence for decades.

“The mission of the army is an external threat,” Colonel Aguer said. “Nobody articulated such an internal threat would happen.”

But, he added, “there’s a need for some adjustment.”

Murle leaders say the government essentially abandoned them in their time of need. Thousands of people remain camped out in the bush, “people with no food, no water, and this is my problem to get them help,” said Mr. Konyi, the Pibor commissioner.

Their rage vented, the Lou Nuer fighters now appear to be heading home. Mr. Konyi even described Pibor on Thursday night as calm. But others say the next outburst is only a matter of time.

“To me, this can’t stop,” said David Ibon, a Murle pastor. “This isn’t just cattle rustling. This is war.”

Del Potro not to play Davis Cup against Germany

Juan Martín del Potro will not play the first round of the Davis Cup against Germany that has been scheduled for next Febraury, the team’s coach Franco Davin confirmed.
“It was a tough decision, but we’ve analyzed it a lot. We believe it’s the best decision. Juan’s physical part is essential,” Davin assured.
The coach said that “playing in a clay tennis court (in Germany) and the next day competing in cement court is a high risk, and worse if we then have seven weeks to play, from Rotterdam to Miami.”
“Germany chose that kind of courts knowing that Del Potro would not be able to go. Patrik Kühnen (German captain) thought about that,” Davin added.
He said that the new Argentine captain Martín Jaite said “he understands the situation because he was once a player” and added that Del Potro’s idea “is not to abandon the Davis Cup for the entire year.”
Argentina will visit Germany in Bamberg between the 10 and 12 of February.
The team that is more likely to travel will be formed by David Nalbandian, Juan Mónaco, Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank.

Federer had been due to play Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals today.
Roger Federer pulled out of the Qatar Open due to back pain today only 10 days before the start of the Australian Open.
The Swiss, who would be chasing a record 17th grand slam title in Australia, was confident however that he would be fit for the tournament in Melbourne, which starts on January 16.
«I hurt my back in the second round match (on Wednesday),» Federer, who won the last of his 16 grand slam titles in Australia two years ago, told a news conference.
«I don’t think it’s the right time to risk anything right now. For Australia, I’m optimistic. It’s not good, but it isn’t crazy bad.
«Without playing and the right treatment I will get through it in the next few days. I have a long journey to Australia, but hopefully mid next week I should be 100 percent again,» added the world number three.
Federer started the Qatar tournament in imperious form, dropping just nine games in his opening two matches, but he struggled in Thursday’s quarter-final against Andreas Seppi, edging through 6-3 5-7 6-4.
He revealed his hurt back early in his second round clash with Slovenia’s Grega Zemlja.
«Then I wasn’t able to serve properly anymore. I had the same thing yesterday,» said Federer, 30.
«I was really playing, you know, with the hand brake on, and I was just trying to manage the situation, really.
«(When) you’re trying to protect the back, you might tweak something else. It’s very dangerous.
«I’ve already played two matches in pain now, and it just gets a bit too much for the body.»
The injury is muscular, with the Swiss using massage and stretches to treat his troubled back, as well as hot baths.
«It’s helped a little bit but not enough to win this tournament, that’s for sure,» said Federer, who was the second seed in Qatar.
«You can just get through it sometimes if you have a couple of days off here or a day where you can work a lot with painkillers. But I don’t have any days off.
«I warmed up this afternoon and was feeling okay, but serving and running was difficult.»
Federer had been due to play Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals today. Tsonga will now meet either top seed Rafael Nadal or compatriot Gael Monfils in the final.
«It’s really sad,» Tsonga told a news conference. «It was good for me to play against him (Federer), to see how my level is and (how) I feel at the beginning of the season.
«I don’t know if it’s an advantage or a disadvantage (to now have a rest day), because I want to play. I need some time on the court to feel better for next week.»

US job growth quickens; unemployment near 3-year low

For all of 2011, the private sector added 1.9 million jobs, while government employment fell 280,000.
US employment growth accelerated last month and the jobless rate dropped to a near three-year low of 8.5%, offering the strongest evidence yet the economic recovery was gaining steam.
Nonfarm payrolls increased 200,000 in December, the Labor Department said today. It was the biggest rise in three months and way above economists’ expectations for a 150,000 gain.
The unemployment rate dropped from a revised 8.7% in November to its lowest level since February 2009, a heartening sign for President Barack Obama whose re-election hopes could hinge on the state of the labour market.
All the job gains in December came from the private sector, where payrolls rose 212,000 – the most in three months. Government employment contracted 12,000.
For all of 2011, the private sector added 1.9 million jobs, while government employment fell 280,000.
A measure of the share of industries that showed job gains during the month rebounded after falling sharply in November.
There were job gains in construction, where unseasonably mild weather has boosted groundbreaking for new homes. Construction payrolls increased 17,000 after falling 12,000 in November.
Transportation and warehousing also got a boost from the mild temperatures, with employment jumping 50,200. The bulk of the rise came from the messenger industry, which added 42,000 jobs, probably reflecting an increase in deliveries of online purchases made during the holiday season.
Manufacturing jobs rose 23,000, the largest increase since July. Factory employment rose 225,000 last year.
Retail employment rose 27,900, slowing after hefty gains in November as retailers geared up for a busy holiday shopping season.
But temporary hiring – seen as a harbinger of future hiring – fell 7,500 in December after gaining 11,200.

CFK ‘will be discharged within 24 hours,’ spokesman

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will be discharged from hospital “within the next 24 hours,” Government spokesman Alfredo Scoccimarro said today. He also stated that on the second day after her operation, “she is recovering with no complications,” and is “able to eat and sleep adequately.”

“The President rested well throughout the night, and she is able to eat adequate meals. She is recovering from the operation without complications,” explained the Government spokesman, on Fernández de Kirchner’s second full day of recovery.

The medical team in charge of looking after the President, headed by Pedro Saco, stated that for the second consecutive day the “medical controls and blood tests” carried out came up with “normal results.”

Scoccimarro further stated that the President, once discharged from the Austral Clinic in Pilar, where she underwent an operation for thyroid cancer two days ago, will return to the Presidential residence in Olivos, Buenos Aires Province.

Hallan otro muerto por los incendios y el Gobierno chileno insiste que fueron provocados

Santiago de Chile, 6 ene (EFE).- Equipos de rescate hallaron hoy el cuerpo de un séptimo brigadista muerto ayer en un incendio en la localidad chilena de Carahue, mientras que el Gobierno insiste en la tesis de que el fuego que arrasa amplias zonas del centro y sur del país se debe a acciones terroristas.
El cadáver de Rodrigo Cifuentes Llanquileo fue hallado a las 08.40 hora local (12.40 GMT) a unos 600 metros del lugar en que fue visto por última vez antes de que una repentina ráfaga de llamas envolviera a los brigadistas que combatían un incendio forestal en un paraje denominado Casa Grande, a 700 kilómetros al sur de Santiago.
Además de Cifuentes, en el incendio de Carahue -que ya ha consumido más de 1.300 hectáreas- murieron los brigadistas Diego Mella Rosales, Ítalo Vidal, Marcelo de la Vega, Cristián Freire, Juan Carlos Cordero y Carlos Pinto Catalán.
Todos ellos pertenecían a una empresa que prestaba servicios contra incendios a Mininco, una de las principales compañías forestales del sur de Chile.
Otros dos trabajadores con quemaduras graves permanecen hospitalizados en Temuco, capital de la región de la Araucanía.
El Gobierno insistió hoy en la denuncia hecha ayer por el presidente Sebastián Piñera en el sentido de los incendios que han arrasado miles de hectáreas son actos intencionados y presentó una querella criminal.
Sin embargo, hay discrepancias en las versiones oficiales acerca de la autoría de estos «actos terroristas».
El ministro chileno del Interior, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, se la atribuyó a grupos mapuches radicales que luchan por la recuperación de tierras, y el intendente (gobernador) de la Araucanía, Andrés Molina, llegó a acusar a la Coordinadora Arauco Malleco (CAM), algunos de cuyos dirigentes han sido condenados por participar en ocupaciones de tierras.
Estas imputaciones fueron replicadas por representantes de los comuneros mapuches que ven en ello un intento de criminalizar sus demandas de tierras y justificar la aplicación de normas represivas.
Y después de que el fiscal nacional, Sabas Chahuán, pidiera prudencia antes de atribuir responsabilidades, el ministro portavoz, Andrés Chadwick, salió a matizar las declaraciones del intendente y del ministro del Interior.
«El Gobierno no entra a señalar quiénes son los responsables (de los incendios), eso se verá en el transcurso del proceso judicial», dijo Chadwick, quien no obstante puntualizó: «Pero tenemos antecedentes de que los focos de los incendios surgieron de forma intencional».
El portavoz gubernamental precisó que no hay que vincular la acciones mapuches con los incendios. «Eso lo determina la Justicia», enfatizó.
El ministro del Interior presentó en la Fiscalía de Temuco una querella por infracción a la ley antiterrorista contra quienes resulten responsables de haber causado el incendio que, según las autoridades locales, se originó en al menos medio centenar de focos simultáneamente.
Hinzpeter dijo que el Gobierno sospecha de la CAM, organización que la semana pasada se atribuyó la destrucción de un helicóptero propiedad de una empresa maderera utilizado para combatir los incendios forestales en la zona.
Según el responsable de Interior, «hay una cierta concomitancia» entre los incendios ocurridos en las regiones sureñas de la Araucanía y el Biobío e, incluso, la quema el pasado miércoles en Santiago de un autobús y una moto de una policía por unos encapuchados al término de una manifestación en favor de los mapuches.
El denominador común en todos estos casos «es la intención de producir pánico en la ciudadanía y por eso se configuraría lo que se denomina el dolo terrorista», explicó el ministro.
El ministro rechazó lo señalado por Héctor Rebolledo, jefe de los Bomberos de Carahue, quien señaló que el fuego también pudo haberse originado en la quema de madera por parte de lugareños que se dedican a la fabricación de carbón.
Para Natividad Llanquileo, portavoz de los presos mapuches que meses atrás protagonizaron una huelga de hambre, las imputaciones son un pretexto para militarizar las comunidades indígenas.
«Este Gobierno está encontrando el argumento, tal como lo hicieron los anteriores, de forma brutal, para aplicar la Ley de Seguridad del Estado», añadió.
En tanto, el fiscal Chahuán dijo a los periodistas que la única forma de saber si se trata de incendios provocados intencionalmente «es que se haga la investigación tal como se está haciendo, desarrollada por las policías y dirigida por la fiscalía».
«No se puede hablar de intencionalidad antes de conocer los resultados de una investigación que está en curso», recalcó Chahuán, quien declinó pronunciarse sobre la acusación del Gobierno contra las organizaciones mapuches.

Syria pledges ‘iron fist’ response to Damascus bombing

Syria’s interior ministry has vowed to «strike back with an iron fist» at what it say is a recent «escalation» of anti-government terror attacks.

It comes after bomb in the capital, Damascus, killed at least 26 civilians and members of the security forces.

Opposition groups have accused the government of planting the bomb to discredit their opponents and influence Arab League monitors.

The monitors are assessing the progress of a regional peace plan.

But activists say the government crackdown has continued, with scores of people killed since the monitors arrived.

The UN says more than 5,000 civilians have been killed since protests against President Bashar al-Assad began 10 months ago.

The Damascus blast happened at a busy junction in the Midan district of Damascus. State TV showed the shattered blood-stained windows of what appeared to be a bus carrying policemen.

Authorities say most of those killed were civilians, but some security personnel were among the casualties.
‘Dirty game’

Interior Minister Ibrahim al-Shaar blamed the attack on a suicide bomber, who he said had «detonated himself with the aim of killing the largest number of people».

«We will strike back with an iron fist at anyone tempted to tamper with the security of the country or its citizens,» he said.

The country’s main opposition coalition, the Syrian National Council (SNC) said the attacks had been carried out by Mr Assad’s government to discredit its critics.

«It is a continuation of the regime’s dirty game as it tries to divert attention from massive protests,» said spokesman Omar Idlibi.

«We call upon for an independent international committee to investigate these crimes that we believe that the regime planned and carried out.»

Maj Maher al-Naimi, a spokesman for the armed anti-government movement the Free Syrian Army (FSA), said the blast was «planned and systematic state terrorism by the security forces of President Bashar al-Assad».

FSA leader Col Riad al-Asaad reportedly denied involvement in the attack.

A British journalist who visited the scene told the BBC reporters were not shown any bodies of those killed.

«We left with the sense of this is a horrific spectacle but that maybe some of the details weren’t quite as one might have expected,» said Ian Black of the Guardian newspaper.

The US condemned the attack, saying violence was not «the right answer to the problems in Syria».

Two weeks ago 44 people died in similar blasts also blamed on terrorists but which opposition groups accused the government of staging.
Arab League concern

Meanwhile, activists reported further violence on Friday. Anti-government protests have regularly followed traditional Friday prayers.

The LCC said nine protesters had been killed in Hama, 14 in the suburbs of Damascus, eight in Homs, three in Idlib and one in Deraa. The numbers cannot be verified.

The Arab League observers have been in Syria since late December to monitor compliance with a peace plan under which the government promised to withdraw the military from the streets and cease its use of force against civilians.

But critics say Mr Assad is using their presence as a political cover and that attacks continue.

Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed bin Helli said he was «concerned» about the Damascus blasts.

«That is why we are calling on the Syrian government to be totally cooperative with the mission and to work by all means to stop the bloodshed and allow room for the political process to begin,» he told the Associated Press.

He said observers at the scene would «undoubtedly have an opinion» about what had happened.

Opposition activists have urged Syrians to take to the streets in mass protests ahead of an Arab League meeting in Cairo on Sunday which will debate the initial findings of the observer mission.

Boudou receives businessmen aiming to invest in Tierra del Fuego

Vice-President Amado Boudou, who is acting as President until Cristina Fernández de Kirchner recovers from her thyroid cancer surgery, and Industry Minister received authorities of companies Newsan and Brightstar, who announced investments of $450 million pesos for the production of electrical appliances in Tierra del Fuego province.

It was announced that Newsan will invest 383 million pesos to fit out its five factories and to build a logistics centre, as well as a factory in Buenos Aires province. It will also build three schools in Tierra del Fuego in exchange for receiving the former Aurora company’s factory.

Brightstar, meanwhile, will invest $15.6 million pesos and will thus reach the production rate of 7.6 million mobile phones.

“In the last eight years there has been a change in paradigm in Argentina and the political project headed by Cristina Fernández de Kirchner considers what all the country needs to keep on growing and create more and more jobs,” Boudou stated.

“The keys of economic development in the next few years will be consumption and investment, Boudou added, and stressed the necessity “of moving forward with imports substitution to create more jobs.”

Minister Giorgi, highlighted the “strong development of Tierra del Fuego as a technological zone, where electronic appliances with the highest standards of quality are built and where leading brands are investing.”

“Our domestic market, preserved from unfair competition, makes companies invest and increase their production, because they know the will sell everything they manufacture in Argentina,” Giorgi concluded.

Wildfire in Chubut consumes over 2,000ha

Justice and Provincial Minister Javier Touriñan confirmed that the wildfire that began on Tuesday at the Puerto Patriada provincial forest park, has already affected 2,000 hectares of native vegetation.
“Despite of the enormous effort of the volunteers to control the fire, it is gaining ground and we have estimated that is already affecting 2,000 hectares,” the provincial official stated.
Touriñan praised the volunteers work that “have as a priority the integrity of the citizens, and they have achieve it so far because no victims were reported.”
“Unfortunately temperatures over 30 degrees (Celsius) have made putting out the fire a highly difficult job,” he explained.

Increasingly Isolated, Iranian Leader Set to Visit Allies in Latin America

When President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran begins a four-nation tour of Latin America on Sunday, showcasing his support in the region against a backdrop of international tensions over his nation’s nuclear program, he is set to visit some of the United States’ most ardent critics: Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador.

But the list of countries Mr. Ahmadinejad will not be visiting is equally telling.

Though Iran is reeling from successive rounds of international and unilateral sanctions, Mr. Ahmadinejad is not visiting Brazil, the region’s economic powerhouse. Nor is he going to other large countries like Mexico, Colombia and Argentina, underscoring that his visit is limited to nations without extensive influence or the capacity to offer much of a major economic partnership.

“If Iran is intent on spreading its political influence, it will not find a hospitable environment in Latin America,” said Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue. “Most governments may want more breathing space from Washington, but they are not looking to be aligned strategically with Tehran.”

The trip, Mr. Ahmadinejad’s sixth official visit to the region since becoming president in 2005, seems intended as a counterstrike against Iran’s increasing international isolation. But his previous trips have not always gone smoothly; his one visit to Brazil, in 2009, was met with protests.

“Dealing with Iran has been nettlesome for Brazil,” said Stephen C. Johnson, director of the Americas program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “There’s not a lot of enthusiasm for welcoming Iran’s president at this time, particularly as sanctions begin to tighten and there are continuing indications that Iran is developing a nuclear weapon.”

When Brazil’s previous president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, went to Tehran in 2010 to help negotiate a deal for Iran to exchange uranium, he stirred up a hornet’s nest of criticism that Mr. Ahmadinejad had used him to try to derail United Nations sanctions against Iran. It was widely interpreted as a blot on Mr. da Silva’s otherwise enviable legacy, causing the kind of friction with Washington that Brazil’s current president, Dilma Rousseff, might try to avoid.

“I’m not sure if Dilma wants to cause a big uproar at this point,” said Oliver Stuenkel, a professor of international relations at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo.

Iran remains an important trading partner for Brazil, passing Russia last year as the top export market for Brazilian beef. It is also a large buyer of Brazilian sugar and soybeans.

But the relationship is asymmetrical and may be more important to Iran. In 2010, Brazil was Iran’s 10th largest trading partner, ranked by the value of goods exchanged, according to data compiled by the European Union’s directorate general for trade. But Iran ranked 27th among Brazil’s trading partners.

As for Iran’s trade with some other countries in the region, including Ecuador, it has grown considerably in a short time, but still remains relatively small.

President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela is Mr. Ahmadinejad’s most vociferous ally in the region, but Iran ranks 42nd on the list of Venezuela’s trading partners, accounting for less than 0.1 percent of Venezuela’s total imports and exports, according to the European Commission data.

With the international sparring over Iran’s nuclear program escalating, the visit gives Mr. Ahmadinejad the chance to glad hand with leaders from other countries who have shown sympathy and solidarity. He will attend the inauguration of President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua on Tuesday.

The visit also brings benefits for Mr. Ahmadinejad’s hosts, giving them the opportunity to thumb their noses at the United States in front of their own political constituents.

“You shore up your base,” Mr. Johnson said of the impact of the visit for leaders like Mr. Chávez in Venezuela. “You enhance your standing as an actor on the global stage.”

Elsa Cardozo, a professor of international studies at the Central University of Venezuela, said the Iranian president’s visit gave Mr. Chávez a chance to strike a combative pose as he embarks on a nearly yearlong re-election campaign, allowing him to “project his own style and radical message.”

“His core supporters are very radical and he doesn’t want to lose them,” Ms. Cardozo said.

Last month, President Obama addressed the Venezuela-Iran relationship in written responses to questions from El Universal, a newspaper in Caracas.

“Ultimately, it is up to the Venezuelan people to determine what they gain from a relationship with a country that violates universal human rights and is isolated from much of the world,” Mr. Obama said. “Here in the Americas, we take Iranian activities, including in Venezuela, very seriously.”

Mr. Chávez responded by lambasting Mr. Obama, calling him a fraud and an embarrassment and telling him to mind his own business.

Iran appears eager to exploit seams in hemispheric relations at a time that the United States’ sway has diminished. The Organization of American States, a traditional mechanism for Washington to project its influence, was weakened last year when Brazil delayed its annual $6.5 million payment to the body. The dispute arose after the organization’s human rights commission called on Brazil to suspend construction of its Belo Monte dam complex in the Amazon River basin.

Countries in the region are also seeking new alliances to counterbalance the traditional weight of the United States. A meeting of heads of state from Latin America and the Caribbean, including Cuba, which is excluded from the O.A.S., was held in Caracas in December. The United States was not invited.

The regional dynamic has also shifted as other major countries, particularly China, make large investments and take an increasing role in trade.

In that context, Iran is a minor player but one that can be particularly problematic. Iran appears to have used its relations with some Latin American countries to try to circumvent international sanctions on its financial operations.

In 2008, the United States imposed sanctions aimed at shutting down a Venezuelan-based bank that it said was operating closely with an Iranian bank that helped finance Iran’s weapons development program.

That was followed by efforts to establish ties between a sanctioned Iranian bank and the Central Bank of Ecuador, according to news reports in that country and State Department cables revealed through WikiLeaks.

And last May, the United States sanctioned Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela, for shipping a gasoline blending component to Iran. The sanctions barred the state oil company from doing some business with the United States government but it did not affect Venezuelan oil exports to the United States.

Iran’s ties in the region have often resulted in announcements of joint economic initiatives, like the establishment of development funds, construction of car or tractor factories in countries like Venezuela or Bolivia, or a port project in Nicaragua. But the projects have either failed to materialize or offered little in the way of real economic activity.

Douglas C. Farah, a senior fellow of the International Assessment and Strategy Center, a national security research group in Alexandria, Va., said such financial relationships were easily manipulated.

“It gives them a chance to get into countries to buy much needed equipment and ways to get into financial systems that will allow them, unsanctioned, to move their money around the world,” Mr. Farah said.

Manchester United and Wayne Rooney have described as «complete nonsense» a newspaper report that the England striker is set to leave the Premier League champions.
The main story on the back page of Saturday’s Independent said the «Christmas bust-up between Rooney and Ferguson has run so deep that it could lead to the player’s departure as early as the current transfer window.»
United and Rooney responded swiftly by issuing a joint denial late on Friday night.
«Any suggestion that Manchester United and Wayne Rooney are to part company is complete nonsense,» the club and the player said in a statement on United’s website.
«We have not seen the detail (of the report) but can assure all United fans the manager and the club are committed to Wayne Rooney and Wayne is committed to the manager and the club.
«The player and the manager have always had and retain the utmost respect for each other and look forward to working together in the coming seasons.»
According to several media reports earlier this week, Rooney was dropped for last Saturday’s 3-2 Premier League home defeat by Blackburn Rovers for «disciplinary reasons».
United rarely comment on internal disciplinary matters but the reports said Rooney was fined a week’s wages for going on a night out with team mates Darron Gibson and Jonny Evans.
The England striker returned to the team for the 3-0 league defeat at Newcastle United on Wednesday but was substituted in the second half after a below-par performance.
Manchester United’s next fixture is an FA Cup third-round clash at holders Manchester City on Sunday.

La violencia se apodera de Damasco

DAMASCO/EL CAIRO.- Un atentado suicida en una zona residencial de Damasco dejó al menos 25 muertos y 46 heridos (la mayor parte, civiles), según informó la televisión estatal siria, que mostró imágenes de hombres que gritaban y mostraban restos humanos en bolsas de plástico, autos y colectivos afectados por la explosión y manchas de sangre en el suelo. La cadena británica BBC afirmó que el objetivo fue un ómnibus policial.

El barrio de Al Midan fue escenario, en los últimos meses, de varias protestas contra el régimen de Bashar al Assad. La explosión se produjo en un momento de gran afluencia en las calles, mientras muchas personas se dirigían a las mezquitas para participar en el tradicional rezo de los viernes.

Los opositores al Gobierno acusaron de inmediato a Al Assad, pero también se sospecha de terroristas islámicos y de militares sublevados que integran el autodenominado Ejército Libre Sirio (ELS). Al lugar llegaron algunos de los 44 miembros de la comisión de observadores de la Liga Árabe.
La misión ha estado bajo fuertes críticas dado que las fuerzas de seguridad siguieron reprimiendo, según los activistas, que también pusieron en duda de que el régimen haya puesto en libertad a presos políticos. Según el canal de televisión Al Arabiya, un equipo de observadores de la Liga Árabe fue atacado por tropas oficialistas en el distrito de Arbeen, en las inmediaciones de Damasco, y pudieron abandonar el lugar ilesos.

Ayer, el titular de la Liga Árabe, Nabil Elaraby, le pidió ayuda al líder de Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, para normalizar la situación siria. En el Cairo se espera para hoy al general Mohamed al Dabi, director de la misión en Siria, para que brinde a los diplomáticos de los países árabes un primer informe de la situación. The US Government said they are closely following the evolution of President Cristina Fernández health after she underwent surgery to remove a thyroid tumour, and highlighted the Argentine leader’s “very good” relationship with Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

The spokeswoman for the Department of State, Victoria Nuland, thus replied to an Argentine journalist during a routine press conference.

“Hillary Clinton is closely following the situation” the official said, and added that the former First Lady holds a close relationship with Cristina Fernández, according to sources of the US embassy in Argentina. “We are concerned about her health,” she added.

Likewise, former Brazilian President Lula da Silva congratulated the Head of State for the satisfactory outcome of her surgery and highlighted the courage with which she faced her circumstances.

“I received the news that your surgery went well with joy. I’ve followed the courageous attitude you have shown whilst facing this challenge” added Lula da Silva, who is also undergoing a treatment to fight a larynx cancer he was diagnosed two months ago.

“I’m certain that we are together and that we will soon meet again, both of us in good health, and you, like usual, full of energy and your willingness to keep on representing the Argentine people as well as you do,” he said.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez spoke with Cristina Fernández on the phone before her surgery and expressed his confidence on her speedy recovery, official Venezuelan sources confirmed.

Chávez, who underwent a surgery to remove a tumour in Cuba last June, called the President to wish her, her family and all the Argentine people a happy New Year, according to a communiqué released by the Foreign Ministry.

During their phone conversation, “Chávez inquired about the President’s health, expressing his optimism over the result of her surgery and his confidence that she will make a speedy recovery,” the statement concluded.

Iran plans more war games in strait

Iran announced plans today for new military exercises in the world’s most important oil shipping lane, the latest in weeks of bellicose gestures towards the West as new sanctions threaten Tehran’s oil exports.
Real Admiral Ali Fadavi, naval commander of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, said exercises next month would focus directly on the Strait of Hormuz, which leads out of the Gulf and provides the outlet for most Mid-East oil.
Iran held a 10-day drill which ended on Monday in neighboring seas.
«Today the Islamic Republic of Iran has full domination over the region and controls all movements within it,» Fadavi said in remarks reported by the Fars news agency.
Iranian officials have threatened in recent weeks to block the strait if new sanctions harm Tehran’s oil exports, and this week said they would take action if the United States sails an aircraft carrier through it.
The United States, which has a massive naval fleet in the area that is overwhelmingly more powerful than Iran’s sea forces, says it will ensure the international waters of the strait stay open. Britain said yesterday that any attempt to close it would be illegal and unsuccessful.

YPF finds oil south of Mendoza; source estimated in 40 billion barrels

Energy company YPF announced the finding of conventional oil at the Cuenca Neuquina, in the Chachahuén bloc, at the Southern area of Mendoza province, that is equivalent to 40 million barrels.

The discovery is framed in the “2010-2014 Exploration Development Program” that YPF launched in 2009 aimed to apply an exploration plan and hydrocarbon production.

The initial campaign was based in the perforation of three oil wells of 1,000 to 1,500 metres.

The test drillings registered mineral layers of the Formación Rayoso with an average thickness of 10 metres.

The company stated that two oil wells tested were equivalent to 500 daily barrels. The third one, that has been recently drilled, is being tested.

“These resources are not considered proven reserves to date,” the news wire quoted the company as saying in a statement to the Buenos Aires stock exchange.

The discovery was made by a joint venture in which YPF has a 70% stake.

YPF said the group planned to drill five more wells in the south-eastern area of the Chachahuen block

El presidente iraní, Mahmud Ahmadinejad, emprenderá mañana una semana de visita a América latina: anfitriones amigables y nuevos mercados potenciales le concederán al mandatario un bienvenido descanso de las tensiones por la disputa nuclear y las sanciones económicas de las potencias mundiales.

Ahmadinejad llegará primero a Caracas, en el inicio de una gira de cinco días que lo llevará a Nicaragua el martes y luego a Cuba y Ecuador. Los expertos indican que la visita del Presidente iraní a los países de izquierda en la región, es un intento de eludir las sanciones económicas y encontrar nuevos mercados. A través de un comunicado del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, el mandatario venezolano, Hugo Chávez, dijo que Ahmadinejad (aliados en la Organización de Países Exportadores de Petróleo, OPEP) hará su visita a pesar de que «la tensión en el golfo Pérsico ha ido en aumento en las últimas horas debido a la presión yanqui», en referencia a la situación en el estrecho de Ormuz (ver «Anuncian nuevas…»).

Los test tienen lugar en medio de una disputa en torno a amenazas de Teherán de bloquear el estrecho, a través del cual pasa el 35% del transporte mundial de petróleo, si Occidente impone nuevas sanciones como reacción a su controvertido programa nuclear. Estados Unidos aprobó restricciones al Banco Central de Irán, y la Unión Europea (UE) está considerando imponer un embargo total sobre las importaciones de petróleo iraní.

La gira en la que Ahmadinejad se reunirá también con los presidentes izquierdistas Daniel Ortega (reelecto en Nicaragua), Raúl Castro (Cuba) y Rafael Correa (Ecuador), probablemente esté plagada de retórica antiestadounidense y del derecho de Irán a desarrollar tecnología nuclear con fines pacíficos. La presidenta republicana del Comité de Asuntos Exteriores de la Cámara Baja de EEUU, la cubana-norteamericana Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, calificó el viaje como un «tour de los tiranos.»

Inflación provincial: del 9,5% en el GBA al 31,7% en Tierra del Fuego

Aunque existe una gran dispersión de índices según la provincia y si se trata de la medición nacional o local, la dinámica de los precios minoristas durante los últimos doce meses muestra incrementos mensuales promedio superiores al 2% en Usuhaia y del 0,8% en el Gran Buenos Aires.

A partir de la interrupción de la difusión del IPC Nacional por parte del INDEC en el mes de julio de 2008, se debe analizar la evolución de la inflación minorista en el interior del país utilizando información publicada por las Direcciones Provinciales de Estadísticas de cada jurisdicción.

En este sentido, corresponde aclarar que en algunas jurisdicciones se elaboran índices de precios autoponderados (Santa Rosa, Paraná, Chubut y Río Negro), que no resultan directamente comparables con los índices ponderados (San Luis, Posadas, Tierra del fuego, Santa Fe y GBA), calculados a partir de encuestas de consumo y gastos de los hogares.

Al comparar la inflación minorista en Noviembre de 2011, sobresale una gran disparidad entre las distintas jurisdicciones para las cuales se dispone de información. Así, la dinámica de precios minoristas varía desde una inflación mensual del 1,9% en Neuquén, hasta un aumento de precios del 0,6% en gran Buenos Aires y en Tierra del Fuego.

Temperature reaches record 37 C in scorching day in the City

City and Greater Buenos Aires area residents endured the hottest year of 2012 thus far, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees and a scorching sun, while the National Weather Forecast service announced the extremely high temperatures stay until Tuesday, at least.
The heat affected both Greater Buenos Aires area and City residents and the high temperatures will continue until next week, according to the National Weather Forecast service (SMN).
Meanwhile, the SMN announced that strong gusts of wind are expected for Friday night. Gusts will reach 50 kilometres per hour, particularly in the Rio de la Plata coast.
High temperatures were register along the centre and Northern regions of the country and in the northern are of the Patagonia area, which minimum temperatures ranging between 18 and 27 temperatures and high temperatures ranging between 35 and 42 degrees.
Saturday will be slightly cooler in the City, with temperature expected to reach a maximum of 29 degrees, but the heat will return on Sunday.

«Macri no necesita que nadie lo venga a buscar»

La diputada del PRO por la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Nancy Monzon, utilizó esta frase para responderle al diputado y ex candidato a gobernador, Francisco De Narváez que salio a criticar duramente a Mauricio Macri por no entender que la la reconstrucción que viene es un frente con eje en el peronismo».
«Eso es lo que Mauricio no entiende: o sos peronista o vas hacia el peronismo. Nadie lo va a ir a buscar», declaró De Narvaez a la prensa.
Ante esto la diputada Monzón señaló que «Macri no necesita que nadie lo venga a buscar. No todo es lo mismo, no todo se compra y todo se vende como prentende De Narvaez».
Monzón marcó la incoherencia del diputado con pasado menemista,y le recordó que «fue él quien junto junto a Felipe Solá vinieron a buscar a Mauricio Macri para ganarle las legislativas a Néstor Kirchner en el año 2009. Sin el apoyo de Mauricio no hubiera habido Unión- Pro y muchos menos, un triunfo sobre el ex presidente»
Sobre las críticas vertidas a Gabriela Michetti que en forma irónica De Nárvaez dijo «es una muy buena candidata. Fue vicejefa y renunció; diputada por la Capital. Le falta postularse por la provincia. Eso habla de la coherencia de la nueva política», Monzón dijo que es el menos indicado para hablar de esta manera.
«De Narváez es el dirigente más camaleónico que puede tener la política, siempre buscando sus intereses inconfesables y personales. Estuvo con Menem, con Duhalde y le puso la frutilla al postre cuando hizo alianza con Ricardo Alfonsín. Lo de De Narváez, jugando a las escondidas con Alfonsín y Rodríguez. Saa, lo muestra tal cual es, calculando qué colectivo le conviene.
Finalmente Monzón dijo que De Narváez «Debería llamarse a silencio porque forma parte del pasado de la política. La muestra de su derrota se la puede ver en el bloque de solo 6 diputados que le quedaron en la provincia de Buenos Aires».
