Un joven de 24 años fue herido de gravedad tras recibir tres impactos de bala en una pelea callejera en la intersección de la Avenida Santa Fe y la calle Emilio Ravignani. Fue trasladado de urgencia al Hospital Fernández.

El titular del SAME, Alberto Crescenti, informó a través de declaraciones radiales que la víctima quedó parapléjico debido a la gravedad de la herida, en el centro del tórax.

El incidente se produjo cuando el joven comenzó a discutir junto a un amigo con otras dos personas que transitaban con un auto por el barrio de Palermo. Tras insultarse mutuamente, los individuos que iban por el vehículo desaparecieron de la escena.

Sin embargo, al poco tiempo volvieron a pasar por el lugar, uno de ellos bajó del auto e hirió gravemente al joven propinándole tres impactos de bala en la espalda.

La víctima se encuentra ahora en el Hospital Fernández, donde será operado por las heridas recibidas. Se encuentra en estado reservado.

Gremios cuestionan la actuación de la Justicia en la quema de vagones

Héctor Recalde analizó la actuación del juez federal Juan Manuel Yalj en la detención de Rubén “Pollo” Sobrero.Nilda Garré defendió la actuación de la Policía Federal en el caso, luego de que fuera apartada por una detención equivocada.

Las rápidas detenciones, liberaciones y rueda de acusaciones que generó la causa por la quema de vagones de la línea Sarmiento en mayo pasado hizo que políticos y gremialistas se convirtieran en analistas del sistema judicial del país. De pronto algunos gremialistas acusaron al Poder Judicial de ser funcional a los representantes del Gobierno. Desde la oposición también salieron a señalar la falta de resolución en algunos casos y la ligereza en otros. Así lo indicó el diputado oficialista y asesor de la CGT, Héctor Recalde, quien advirtió que “hay algunos jueces que son muy lerdos con los represores y muy duros con los trabajadores”.

Recalde opinó así sobre el caso del sindicalista Rubén Sobrero, detenido y luego liberado por el juez federal de San Martín Juan Manuel Yalj.

El abogado de la CGT advirtió que se deben revertir prácticas de “décadas” entre los magistrados.

También destacó que “por suerte los juicios contra los represores están avanzando bien”, aunque advirtió que el titular de la CGT, Hugo Moyano, consideró que Sobrero fue víctima de “una maniobra”.

“No coincidimos políticamente pero sí en el concepto de defender a los trabajadores. Intuimos que era una maniobra, que no se iba a llegar a buen puerto. Fue intuición y creo que acertamos” señaló Moyano.

Al hablar en una universidad de Mar del Plata consideró “lamentable” que funcionarios del Gobierno hayan opinado sobre la causa que lleva adelante el juez Yalj.

Cruce con el jefe de Gabinete

Recalde opinó sobre el reciente intercambio que el jefe de Gabinete tuvo con Piumato, luego de que la CGT sacara un comunicado en el que denunció la existencia de “una campaña tendiente a demonizar la actividad” gremial “sin importar el color político de los perseguidos”.

Si bien Fernández salió al cruce de esa posición al manifestar que el Gobierno “no persigue a nadie y menos a un sindicalista”, Piumato, secretario de Derechos Humanos de la CGT, afirmó que “parece que sobre los dirigentes sindicales rige el principio de culpabilidad”.

“Así como Aníbal Fernández tiene todo el derecho del mundo a expresar su pensamiento, también Piumato tiene derecho a expresarlo”, sentenció el apoderado de la central obrera.

Apoyo a la Federal

Luego de que a principios de semana la Justicia separa a la Policía Federal por una actuación equivocada en la detención de un sospechoso por la quema de los vagones, ayer la ministra Nilda Garré respaldó la actuación de la fuerza.

“Es una facultad del juez. No cabe ninguna reflexión”, dijo Garré. “Estimamos que el desempeño de la Federal fue correcto, que aportó elementos de investigación importantes”, agregó.

A la hora de evaluar la separación de la fuerza de las tareas de investigación, dispuesta por el juez federal de San Martín, Juan Manuel Yalj, Garré minimizó el apartamiento de la Federal y la convocatoria a la Secretaría de Inteligencia: “El juez puede necesitar más cosas”, deslizó escueta.

SANTIAGO — «No podemos estar tres años en paro; debemos proyectar la lucha por la gratuidad de la educación pública en Chile a futuros procesos eleccionarios», señaló la líder estudiantil Camila Vallejo, luego de una protesta el jueves y la ruptura de un diálogo con el gobierno el miércoles.
«Las demandas que nosotros hemos instalado, sobre todo las más profundas, estructurales, han llegado para quedarse, así que vamos a proyectar este movimiento en la medida que sea necesario hacerlo», dijo Vallejo tras una violenta jornada de protesta en Santiago el jueves.
«Vamos a generar todas las condiciones necesarias para darle proyección a este movimiento y para que en próximos hechos políticos, como en procesos eleccionarios, nosotros podamos cobrarle la palabra al gobierno», agregó Vallejo, la cara más visible de un movimiento que se extiende ya por cinco meses.
Los estudiantes reclaman por educación pública gratuita y de calidad, en un país que cuenta con uno de los sistemas educativos más segregados del planeta, donde la gratuidad es inexistente a nivel universitario y alcanza sólo a 40% de los escolares.
«Para que nosotros podamos mantener este movimiento en el largo plazo, obviamente vamos a tener que buscar condiciones de movilización distinta; no podemos estar tres años en paro», dijo Vallejo, sobre el eventual fin de las ocupaciones que mantienen paralizados a cientos de colegios y universidades.
La jornada de protesta del jueves, que dejó 132 detenidos más 25 policías y cinco civiles heridos, se produjo un día después de que una frágil instancia de diálogo abierta hace una semana entre los estudiantes y el gobierno se quebrara tras la negativa oficial de avanzar hacia la gratuidad para gran parte del sistema público de enseñanza.

Starbucks pide donaciones para crear trabajo

La cadena de café lanzó la campaña Create Jobs for USA . Los clientes podrán donar US$ 5 a través de su compra o en línea. El CEO de Starbucks, Howard Schultz, anunció que «su cadena de establecimientos de café está colaborando en el lanzamiento a escala nacional de un fondo dedicado a estimular el empleo en los EEUU», según recoge la CNBC.

«Create Jobs for USA» es la iniciativa presentada por Starbucks y Opportunity Finance Network, un grupo de instituciones financieras privadas. El objetivo de la alianza entre ambas entidades es proveer de préstamos accesibles a personas con bajos ingresos.

En opinión de Schultz, «los pequeños emprendedores deben poder tener acceso al crédito para poder volver a contratar personal».

Las donaciones podrán realizarse a través de Internet, pero también en los locales Starbucks de los Estados Unidos.

Las personas que donen cantidades superiores a los cinco dólares serán obsequiadas con una pulsera Starbucks en la que se leerá la palabra ‘Indivisible’.

Los riesgos de excederse con los suplementos vitamínicos

WASHINGTON (Reuters).- Las personas que toman suplementos para aumentar su ingesta de minerales en realidad podrían estar recibiendo demasiada cantidad de algo bueno, e incluso arriesgándose a sufrir problemas serios, según revela un estudio realizado en Estados Unidos y publicado en la revista The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. En algunos casos, los usuarios de suplementos pueden estar en realidad sobrecargándose de minerales, como el hierro, que puede causar problemas de salud potencialmente graves, dijeron los investigadores.

«La gente necesita elegir los suplementos para ayudar a satisfacer, pero no superar, los niveles recomendados de ingesta diaria», dijo Regan Bailey, investigadora en nutrición de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud de Estados Unidos, que dirigió el estudio. Bailey y sus colegas utilizaron encuestas de alimentación para evaluar la ingesta de minerales entre los 8860 hombres y mujeres que participaron en un importante sondeo de salud del gobierno entre 2003 y 2006.

Los hombres y mujeres que informaron el uso de suplementos alimenticios con ocho importantes minerales -calcio, hierro, magnesio, zinc, fósforo, cobre, potasio y selenio- eran mucho menos propensos a estar recibiendo cantidades inadecuadas de esos minerales a través de los alimentos que comían que quienes dijeron que no complementaban la dieta, indicó el estudio. La relación era más fuerte en las mujeres, que son más propensas que los hombres a tomar suplementos.

Los usuarios de suplementos, a su vez, solían comer mejor y tener estilos de vida más saludables que los no usuarios, señaló Bailey. El equipo investigador también halló que la ingesta de calcio caía a menudo por debajo de los niveles recomendados, incluso entre quienes se declaraban usuarios de suplementos.

Aproximadamente una cuarta parte de los usuarios de suplementos, y el 71% de los no usuarios, no reciben la cantidad diaria recomendada de calcio: entre 800 y 1000 miligramos diarios para los hombres mayores de 51 años y entre 1000 y 1200 miligramos diarios para las mujeres de la misma edad. El calcio es necesario para la salud de los huesos.

Las personas mayores eran mucho más propensas a quedarse cortas a la hora de satisfacer sus necesidades diarias de calcio, pero también a sobrepasarlas. Eso es porque la gente suele usar más los suplementos a medida que envejece, lo que ayuda a explicar por qué casi el 16% de las mujeres de entre 51 y 70 años registraban una ingesta diaria de calcio superior al límite máximo aconsejado. El exceso de calcio se ha relacionado con cálculos renales.

Los usuarios de suplementos también eran más propensos a aumentar su ingesta de magnesio y zinc por encima de los máximos recomendados, aunque se desconocen las consecuencias de esos excesos sobre la salud, si es que las hay. «Nosotros siempre esperamos que quienes están tomando suplementos alimenticios son los que más los necesitan, pero no parece ser así», dijo Cheryl Rock, investigadora en nutrición de la Universidad de California en San Diego.

Se importará más gas desde Bolivia

La presidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner inauguró ayer -a través de una videoconferencia- el tramo de gasoducto que une la localidad catamarqueña de Chumbicha y La Rioja capital, que va a beneficiar a 30 mil familias riojanas. La cabecera de la transmisión fue en el partido bonaerense de La Matanza, donde Cristina visitó las obras del hospital Materno Infantil que está siendo construido en Ciudad Evita, mientras que el ministro de Planificación, Julio De Vido, y el gobernador Luis Beder Herrera encabezaron un acto en la planta de regulación instalada sobre la ruta nacional 38, a 30 kilómetros de la capital provincial.

De Vido afirmó que “el Estado debe ser un medio, una herramienta, para poner en valor la capacidad creativa del pueblo”, y advirtió que “si no entendemos esto, vamos a volver a los tiempos amargos de la ortodoxia”. El ministro dijo que “tenemos que pensar en una La Rioja industrializada, que preste servicios a quienes vienen a instalar industrias”, al tiempo que ratificó que Argentina incrementará el volumen de importación de gas boliviano. “Vamos consolidando mayores recursos gasíferos en la Argentina”, sostuvo.

El gobernador Luis Beder Herrera detalló que del total de beneficiarios, 7.500 corresponderán -en una primera etapa- a residentes de la capital provincial. Durante el acto también se dejó formalmente inaugurada la continuidad de la obra de conducción del ducto hacia las localidades riojanas de Chamical y Chilecito, que forman parte del Plan Director. Beder recordó sobre el proyecto: “Lo hicimos con (el expresidente) Néstor Kirchner y que luego usted, Presidenta, lo hizo realidad junto a Julio De Vido y por eso los riojanos estamos muy contentos”. En respuesta a estas palabras, Cristina dijo que “en el Gobierno sabemos que es muy importante para todos ustedes” esta obra, y luego felicitó a todos los riojanos. De Vido, por su parte, dijo que “el titular del Ejecutivo riojano es un infatigable promotor de estas obras”.

Una inversión de $123 millones

El tramo del gasoducto que une la localidad catamarqueña de Chumbicha y La Rioja capital, inaugurado ayer, demandó una inversión de 123 millones de pesos.

La obra, con una extensión de 78 kilómetros de tubos de 8 pulgadas de diámetro y un ramal corto de 5 kilómetros de 12 pulgadas, cuenta con una nueva planta de regulación de presión en la ciudad de La Rioja.

Del lado catamarqueño, se construyó una nueva planta compresora en la localidad de Casa de Piedra.

Roggio no quiere venta de empresas a extranjeros

El empresario Aldo Roggio cuestionó duramente el proceso de extranjerización de compañías nacionales, al opinar que el capital debe venir por nuevas inversiones y no por la compra de compañías locales.

«Se me cae una lágrima cuando veo que se vende una empresa argentina al capital extranjero», declaró Roggio, durante una comida organizada anteanoche por la Fundación Empresarial + Emprendedores (E+E) en Córdoba.

El hombre de negocios dijo estas palabras 48 horas después de que se vendiera la productora avícola Avex, en conjunto con la tradicional Flora Dánica, en 150 millones de dólares, al grupo alimentario brasileño BRF.

«Cuando se vende una empresa nacional, se me cae una lágrima. No estoy en contra de la inversión extranjera; quiero la inversión extranjera; pero para empresas nuevas, no para comprar empresas nacionales», expresó, según publicó ayer La Voz del Interior.

Roggio agregó: «Si tuviera que hacer una autocrítica y al empresariado nacional diría que no hay que vender y si se vende es para hacer otro negocio».

«Una cosa es que venga un gerente internacional y se vaya a los tres años y otra es negociar y hablar con un empresario argentino que vive aquí», agregó. No obstante, reconoció que él mismo incurrió en el mismo error al vender CTI al mexicano Carlos Slim. «Sabíamos que teníamos que vender CTI desde el principio por el volumen y dimensión que tiene una empresa de telefonía», justificó.

El proceso de extranjerización de empresas tiene en los últimos años un fuerte protagonismo de compañías brasileñas..

La Iglesia pidió atender la pobreza en la campaña

SANTA FE.- El arzobispo de Rosario, monseñor José Luis Mollaghan, aseguró que, a pesar de las estadísticas optimistas que presenta el gobierno nacional, la pobreza sigue siendo la mayor de las desgracias que sufre el país, tras lo cual destacó que la droga es un flagelo que azota a las argentinos.

«Por eso les pido a los que recorren los barrios en busca de votos que no dejen de pensar en la pobreza, la marginación que existe y el flagelo de la droga sobre nuestras familias», puntualizó el arzobispo. «Las necesidades siguen igual. Se pueden ver saliendo del centro, yendo a los barrios», insistió.

Mollaghan presidió la ceremonia religiosa por el Día de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, que se celebró frente al Monumento Nacional a la Bandera, y a la que asistió el gobernador y candidato presidencial por el Frente Amplio Progresista (FAP), Hermes Binner. En ese marco sostuvo que los políticos tienen presente a la pobreza sólo en sus palabras. «La mencionan en los discursos, porque hoy todo está puesto en el voto», lamentó.

Para dar fuerza a sus expresiones, el arzobispo de Rosario dijo que mucha gente va a Cáritas a buscar alimentos. Luego de reiterar el pedido para que los políticos no dejen de pensar en la pobreza y la droga, el prelado apuntó hacia un tercer flagelo: «La inseguridad es tema preocupante siempre, especialmente cuando vamos a los barrios y vemos que la gente tiene temor y vive encerrada en su casa, pone rejas y no sale después de las seis de la tarde».

Antes de cerrar su mensaje, volvió sobre el reclamo a los dirigentes políticos, sobre todo «aquellos que por estos días hacen campaña y recorren los barrios en busca de votos. No pueden dejar de pensar en la pobreza, la marginación que existe y el flagelo de la droga sobre nuestras familias»..

El próximo jueves 13 de octubre, la señora Margarita Barrientos, fundadora del comedor «Los Piletones», recibirá la distinción de Ciudadana Ilustre en el Salón Dorado de la Legislatura porteña. La ceremonia contará con la presencia del Jefe de Gobierno, Mauricio Macri.

La iniciativa, aprobada en la sesión ordinaria del pasado 8 de septiembre, fue presentada por el presidente del bloque PRO de la Legislatura porteña, Cristian Ritondo. «Reconozco que es de esas personas que saben dimensionar la plenitud humana de aquellos que más necesitan. Ella es una combinación de pocas palabras y mucha acción solidaria», argumentó el diputado.

Apoyaron este proyecto el vicepresidente primero, Oscar Moscariello, Alejandro García, Fernando De Andreis, Carolina Stanley y María Herrero del bloque PRO; y Claudio Presman y Rubén Campos, pertenecientes a otro bloque. Además, fue firmado por Raúl Puy, Avelino Tamargo, Patricio Di Stéfano, Silvina Pedreira, Carmen Polledo y Lidia Saya, integrantes de la Comisión de Cultura.

Ritondo hizo hincapié en la labor incansable, la buena disposición y el espíritu solidario de Margarita Barrientos como impulsores de la creación del comedor ubicado en Villa Soldati y que hoy alimenta a más de 600 personas, en su mayoría niños, madres y ancianos.

Por último, el diputado argumentó que «Margarita Barrientos es el ejemplo de superación y solidaridad; ella es mucho más que todos los premios que se le han otorgado. Ella es, en sí mismo, solidaridad para con los más necesitados».

«A Cristina no le interesa la reelección indefinida»

Así lo aseguró el diputado kirchnerista Carlos Kunkel, en medio del debate por la reforma constitucional.A sólo 15 días de las elecciones nacionales y en medio del debate por la reforma constitucional, el diputado kirchnerista Carlos Kunkel aseguró que a la presidenta Cristina kirchner «no le interesa para nada» la reelección indefinida y calificó de «ridícula» las advertencia que en ese sentido hizo la diputada Elisa Carrió.

«Esa posibilidad a Cristina no le interesa para nada. De ninguna manera. Nosotros queremos consolidar el modelo de país industrialista y mantener la política de desendeudamiento», señaló Kunkel. Además, acusó a la candidata presidencial de Coalición Cívica de «decir las mismas boludeces de siempre» y descartó un «Pacto de Olivos II» con el candidato del Frente Amplio Progresista, Hermes Binner, como denunció Carrió.

Por su parte, el gobernador de Santa F, que había dicho que en su plataforma incluía una reforma hacia un sistema parlamentario de gobierno, enfatizó que nunca lo aprobaría si fuera para favorecer a Cristina Kirchner y negó un pacto con el Gobierno. Por su parte, el radical Ricardo Alfonsín, su aliado bonaerense Francisco de Narváez y los peronistas Eduardo Duhalde y Alberto Rodríguez Saá también anunciaron que no apoyarán ninguna reforma que «con la excusa de ir hacia un sistema parlamentario y menos presidencialista esconda la posibilidad de perpetuar a un primer ministro (o una figura similar) en su cargo».

Kunkel dijo estar «preocupado por la falta de credibilidad de la oposición», que hace que «el 40 por ciento de los argentinos que no están de acuerdo con el gobierno no tengan representación» y rescató a Binner como única figura «seria». Nilda Garré restringe el poder de los comisarios

La ministra de Seguridad de la Nación, Nilda Garré, restringió el poder de los jefes de las 17 comisarías de la Policía Federal ubicadas en la zona centro de la ciudad de Buenos Aires al anunciar que ya no podrán elegir dónde asignar a su personal para que haga tareas de vigilancia en la vía pública.

La funcionaria dio la noticia ayer, al presentar el denominado Plan de Seguridad Urbana, que reasigna paradas policiales de comisarías y «patrullas motorizadas» de acuerdo con los reclamos vecinales y la determinación del mapa del delito. Además, el programa establece que 500 uniformados reforzarán los patrullajes en la vía pública, las escuelas y en espacios verdes; lo que, según anunció la ministra, aumentará las paradas policiales en un 40% durante el día y en un 150% durante la noche.

«El sistema ya no reposa en decisiones autónomas de las comisarías para el despliegue de su personal en la vía pública, sino en una planificación ajustada a los requerimientos de cada jurisdicción», sostuvo la cartera que dirige a través de un comunicado. Además, el texto difundido dejó en claro que la iniciativa fue ordenada por la presidenta Cristina Kirchner y explicó que el plan «aplica criterios de racionalidad, sistematicidad y maximización de los recursos humanos y materiales a la asignación de las paradas policiales».

Por su parte, la ministra argumentó que, muchas veces, la elección de las paradas policiales eran decisiones equivocadas de los comisarios por «errores o intereses».

Esa no fue, sin embargo, la primera vez que Garré hizo referencia a los «intereses» de los comisarios. En abril pasado, durante una charla con vecinos de la Comuna 3 de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, la funcionaria había dicho que «la Policía Federal es el problema más serio y más complejo» que enfrenta el gobierno nacional, ya que hay sectores de la fuerza «que disputan negocios y comisarías que recaudan bien». Tras esa aseveración, informó el diario La Nación, la funcionaria intentó minimizar el alcance de sus dichos.

Esta montonera de cuarta no sabe ni lo q hace ni lo q dice, cada jurisdiccion y cada jefe de cada comisaria sabe donde y cuando poner el personal correspondiente acorde a las necesidades de las mismas, pero la verdad que de este gobierno ya nada me sorprende, como las veces q manda al personal polic

Nuevo sismo en Jujuy

El norte del país volvió a temblar. Un nuevo sismo ocurrió a las 5:13, cuyo epicentro se ubicó a 86 km al este de San Salvador de Jujuy, en la zona cerrana que limita con la provincia de Salta. La magnitud fue de 4.6 grados en la escala de Richter.

El IMPRES (Instituto Nacional de Prevención Sísmica) envió un comunicado confirmando un segundo sismo en la zona norte del país en menos de 48 horas. Los satos aportados por el Instituto fueron los siguientes

Zona epicentral
El epicentro se ubicó a 86 km al este de San Salvador de Jujuy, en la zona cerrana que limita con la provincia de Salta en los alrededores de las poblaciones de Santa Clara y Palma Sola, ambas de la provincia de Jujuy.
Profundidad: 10 Km, Magnitud:4.6, Intensidad: La intensidad del sismo fue de grado III(tres) de la escala Merca- lli Modificada en la ciudad de Salta.

Por la hora del sismo y por su magnitud, no desató el mismo impacto en la gente como el que ocurrió el pasado jueves a las 8.12 que tuvo una marca de 6 grados en la escala Ritcher.

Un Nobel de la Paz 100% femenino para África y la primavera árabe

El premio Nobel de la Paz fue otorgado este viernes a la primera presidenta de un país africano, la liberiana Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a su compatriota, la «guerrera de la paz» Leymah Gbowee y a una figura emblemática de la primavera árabe en Yemen, Tawakkul Karman.
Tawakkul Karman, primera mujer árabe en recibir el prestigioso Premio Nobel, dedicó su galardón a la «Primavera Arabe», como se llama a la ola de rebeliones populares que han derrocado o desestabilizado varios regímenes autoritarios en Africa del Norte y Oriente Medio.
Las tres galardonadas fueron «recompensadas por su lucha no violenta por la seguridad de las mujeres y de sus derechos a participar en los procesos de paz», declaró en Oslo el presidente del Comité Nobel noruego, Thorbjoern Jagland.
«Este premio es un tributo a todas la mujeres en el mundo y a su papel en los procesos de paz y reconciliación», dijo por su parte el primer ministro noruego Jens Stoltenberg.
Primera mujer elegida democráticamente presidenta de un país africano en 2005, Sirleaf, 72 años, trabajó para la reconstrucción de un país devastado por 14 años de guerras civiles, que causaron la muerte de 250.000 personas.
La presidenta liberiana recibe el Nobel de la Paz justo cuatro días antes de una elección presidencial difícil para la «Dama de Hierro» que aspira a la reelección, una decisión acogida con controversia en Liberia.
El principal oponente a Sirleaf, Winston Tubman, denunció a la AFP una recompensa «inaceptable e inmerecida» y consideró «una provocación» que sea atribuido en plena campaña electoral.
En Oslo, el presidente del comité Nobel desmintió toda tentativa de injerencia. «Escogemos en función de lo que nos parece importante y no de consideraciones políticas internas», dijo.
«Es un premio para todo el pueblo liberiano», reaccionó la interesada, muy popular en el extranjero, pero menos consensual en su país, donde se le reprocha no haber cumplido con sus promesas en materia económica y social y de no haber hecho suficiente para la reconciliación nacional.
En un primer momento, Sirleaf apoyó la rebelión de Charles Taylor contra el régimen de Samuel Doe, pero se convirtió en una feroz adversaria a la luz de las violencias de Taylor, presidente de 1997 a 2003, que lo llevaron al tribunal de La Haya para ser condenado por crímenes de guerra y lesa humanidad.
El acceso de Sirleaf al poder fue facilitado por la labor de Gbowee, «guerrera de la paz», fundadora del movimiento pacífico que mediante una «huelga sexual» contribuyó a terminar con la segunda guerra civil en 2003, señaló el comité Nobel.
«Leymah Gbowee movilizó y organizó a las mujeres más allá de las líneas de división étnica y religiosa para poner fin a una larga guerra en Liberia y garantizar la participación de las mujeres en las elecciones», señaló Jagland.
«Es un Nobel para todas las mujeres africanas, lo describo de esa manera», dijo Gbowee en sus primeras declaraciones a la AFP.
«Es para las mujeres en general, pero particularmente para las mujeres en Africa», declaró Gbowee.
País fundado en 1822 por esclavos negros liberados provenientes de Estados Unidos, Liberia conoce una paz frágil debido a tensiones étnicas y a la presencia de mercenarios en su selva tropical.
La tercera laureada, la yemení Tawakkul Karman, periodista de 32 años, tuvo «un papel preponderante en la lucha a favor de los derechos de las mujeres, de la democracia y de la paz en Yemen» .
Nacida en 1979, Karman, primera mujer árabe que recibe el Premio Nobel de la Paz, lo dedicó a los yemenitas en lucha contra el régimen del presidente Ali Abdalá Saleh.
«Este premio es una victoria para la revolución y para el carácter pacífico de esta revolución», dijo a la AFP.
Fundadora del grupo «Mujeres periodistas sin cadenas», esta joven madre de tres hijos fue una de las principales líderes de las manifestaciones estudiantiles de enero que iniciaron el levantamiento, por lo que fue brevemente detenida.
Hasta el presente, en 111 años, sólo 12 mujeres habían recibido el Nobel de la Paz, entre ellas la guatemalteca Rigoberta Menchú, galardonada en 1992.
Las felicitaciones han llegado de todas partes del mundo: desde la canciller alemana Angela Merkel, mujer más poderosa del mundo según la revista Forbes, hasta el presidente Nicolas Sarkozy, pasando por el secretario general de la ONU, Ban ki-moon.
El premio será entregado en Oslo el 10 de diciembre próximo, fecha aniversario de la muerte de su fundador, el industrial y filántropo sueco Alfred Nobel y consiste en una medalla, un diploma y una suma de 10 millones de coronas suecas, el equivalente de un millón de euros.

Fitch rebaja la nota de la deuda de Italia hasta A con perspectiva negativa

Roma-(EFE).- La agencia de medición de riesgos Fitch rebajó hoy la calificación de la deuda soberana de Italia en un escalón, de AA- a A+, según informó hoy a través de un comunicado.
Con esta revisión, la calificación de Italia para hacer frente a su deuda a largo plazo pasa de sobresaliente bajo a notable alto.
La rebaja de Fitch, llega después de la bajada de la nota de la deuda italiana hecha por Standard & Poor’s, el pasado 19 de septiembre, y de la de Moody’s, a principios de esta semana.
Fitch señaló que la rebaja refleja la intensificación de la crisis en la zona euro, que constituye un impacto negativo significativo a nivel financiero y económico, que «ha debilitado el perfil de riesgo de la deuda soberana de Italia».
La agencia de ‘rating’ subrayó, que como ya había adelantado de forma preventiva, una solución global a la crisis es «política y técnicamente compleja, lo que implicará que se tarde tiempo en recuperar la confianza de los inversores».
Agregó que la crisis ha impactado negativamente en las perspectivas de estabilidad financiera y crecimiento del país y subrayó, además, que el alto nivel de deuda pública y la necesidad de financiación, junto con el bajo potencial de crecimiento, pone a Italia en una situación de «especial vulnerabilidad frente a los impactos externos».
La deuda pública italiana se sitúa en torno al 120 % del Producto Interior Bruto (PIB), es decir, más de 1,9 billones de euros.
Fitch aludió al reciente plan de ajuste aprobado por el Parlamento italiano, por valor de cerca de 54.000 millones de euros, sobre el que aseguró que «ha reforzado la consolidación fiscal italiana».
Sin embargo, sobre esta iniciativa, consideró que la «titubeante respuesta del Gobierno a la expansión del contagio, ha erosionado la confianza de los mercados sobre la capacidad de Italia de navegar a través de la crisis de la Eurozona».
Según Fitch, en base a sus proyecciones fiscales, Italia podría no alcanzar su objetivo de equilibrio presupuestario en 2013, como pretende el Ejecutivo.
La agencia indicó que, mientras los objetivos presupuestarios a corto plazo son alcanzables, las medidas fiscales adoptadas por el Gobierno carecen de una reforma fundamental de las finanzas públicas.
Fitch manifestó que, pese a que la alta presión fiscal es uno de los factores que más pesan sobre el crecimiento a largo plazo del país, está previsto que se incremente más aun.
Además, señala la firma estadounidense, la restricción del gasto está basado en los recortes del gasto público actual, así como en la restricción de inversiones, en lugar de llevar a cabo una reforma estructural duradera del gasto público.
Según Fitch, un mayor énfasis en la reforma estructural fiscal reforzaría la confianza sobre la posibilidad de que el país logre alcanzar un crecimiento sostenido a lo largo de varios años, así como la ampliación de la productividad y el potencial crecimiento de la economía.
Fitch hizo hincapié en que las debilidades estructurales que han constreñido el crecimiento económico de Italia son bien conocidas: «la elevada deuda pública, la alta presión fiscal, un sector público ineficaz, barreras a la competencia en el mercado, inflexibilidad en el mercado de trabajo y una pronunciada división norte-sur».
«Ante el telón de fondo de reformas en toda Europa y el mayor coste del capital al que Italia debe hacer frente a corto y medio plazo, el país necesitará hacer una reforma económica más radical y sostenida, para evitar una importante hueco en la productividad y competitividad en comparación con el resto de países de la OCDE», advierte Fitch.

Sarkozy tells Turkey to recognise Armenia ‘genocide’

YEREVAN — French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday urged Turkey to take responsibility for the 1915 massacre of Armenians, calling its refusal to recognise the deaths as genocide as «unacceptable».

Sarkozy’s comments, issued at the start of his first state visit to Armenia, whose diaspora represents a large voting minority in France, come months before a presidential election which he heads into with approval ratings at a low.

«Turkey, which is a great country, would be honorable to revisit its history like the other great countries in the world have done: Germany, France,» Sarkozy said at the top of a two-day, three nation swing through the Caucasus.

France has recognised mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman empire as genocide a decade ago, a bold step that pressure from Turkey has prevented in countries with a large Armenian diaspora such as the United States.

Turkey says those killed were the victims of war, and has downgraded relations with nations that dared to disagree.

Sarkozy however left no room for ambiguity after visiting the National Genocide Museum in Armenian capital to pay respect to the massacre victims and plant a tree in the memorial garden.

«The genocide of Armenians is a historic reality that was recognised by France. Collective denial is even worse than individual denial,» he said at a joint appearance with Armenian counterpart Serge Sarkisyan.

«We are always stronger when we look our history in the face, and denial is not acceptable.»

Asked whether France should adopt a law prosecuting anyone who denies that the massacres were «genocide», Sarkozy replied that «if Turkey revisited its history, looked it in the face, with its shadows and highlights, this recognition of the genocide would be sufficient.»

«But if Turkey will not do this, then without a doubt it would be necessary to go further,» he said.

Sarkozy angered Turkey ahead of his election in 2007 by backing a law aimed at prosecuting those who refused to recognise the event as a genocide.

The French lower house of parliament later rejected the measure, infuriating an Armenian diaspora of some 500,000 people.

Sarkozy has also indicated his ambition to bring Armenia and neighbouring Azerbaijan forward in the stalled peace process over the tiny Nagorny Karabakh region.

But just as the French leader urged the two rivals to «take the risk of peace» in an interview on Wednesday, pro-Armenian authorities that control Karabakh said a soldier was killed by Azerbaijani forces.

Baku responded Thursday with the accusation that two soldiers were shot dead from the Armenian side.

Seventeen soldiers have now been reported killed this year along the ceasefire line in Karabakh. Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan seized the territory from Azerbaijan in a war in the 1990s that left some 30,000 dead.

Despite years of talks since the 1994 ceasefire, the two sides have still to sign a final peace deal.

Sarkozy was to dine with Sarkisyan later Thursday and continue his tour of Caucasus states Azerbaijan and Georgia on Friday.

Half a million families live in Buenos Aires slums and keep expanding vertically and horizontally

Over half a million families live in 864 slums and irregular settlements in metropolitan Buenos Aires surrounding Argentina’s capital. Of this number 66% have over fifteen years since founded and in 65% of them expansion either horizontally or vertically continues.

The report is the result of a census from a NGO “A roof for my country” (UTPMP) and covers the largest metropolitan concentration of Argentina with a quarter of the country’s population and over 50% of GDP.

“We define ‘villa miseria’ (‘misery slums’) as highly crowded concentrations in which there are no roads, but passages, with vertical growth and far more difficult to urbanize.

Settlements on the other hand respect the layout, certain display of roads, plots and open spaces for leisure and some services”, said Agustin Algorta head of the UTPMP Social Department.

While in the first ring of metropolitan Buenos Aires the ratio of slums to irregular settlements is 55% to 44%, in the following rings the irregular settlements predominate.

The periphery rings of slums and irregular settlements surrounding the city of Buenos Aires first flourished in the 1930s and 1940s along railways, but 66% of them have just over 15 years and 65% of them continue to expand.

Following the meltdown of the Argentine economy in 2001/02 and the strong and sustained recovery since then, in the last decade (2002/2011) the number of new settlements has increased by 16.7% and the population by 55% in those already established, points out the report.

Regarding the origin of the informal urbanizations population, most belong to migratory groups (68.1%), ‘from rural areas to the city’ and in 83% of those surveyed, there are migrants from neighbouring countries, mainly Paraguay and Bolivia.

However “as families develop new roots, they tend to remain in the same slum or settlement helping to keep it expanding, points out Algorta.

Only 17.5% of new generations moves to some housing complex outside their original living place and does not necessarily mean a change to a formal urbanization.

“The persistence of slums and irregular settlements in metropolitan Buenos Aires is but evidence of the great deficit regarding access to basic services and adequate urban infrastructure for different sectors of the community. The scarce provision of plots for residential developments with services’ infrastructure together with an insufficient housing policy contributes to the continuing informal urbanization process”, points Mari Laura Raffo who was responsible for the field work.

According to the UTPMP census only in 16% of informal urbanizations have housing programs been implemented by government and most of them in 2009 and 2010.

Most slums and settlements have been constructed on fiscal land, 52.4%; in usurped private land 35%. As to their location, 35.3% along dry streams or rivers; 33.6% close to high traffic lanes and 21.9% next to garbage dumps.

An overwhelming majority (85%) have no sewage which is partially compensated with some form of precarious sceptic facilities (54%). In 80% of them there is no pluvial drainage which means repeated swamping and the presence of stagnant waters which help the development of diseases and parasites.

Regarding public utilities, 83.4% have no access to the gas network and appeal to carafes (much dearer than the subsidized network gas). Minimum percentages have access to running water and power, although in this last case there is a lot of illegal ‘hanging’ to the urban grid.

A majority (84.3%) of the periphery population living in these conditions has a primary school in a ten blocks radius, but that percentage drops to 57.6% when it comes to high school, which has a huge influence in the high percentage of drop outs and repeat.
Finally 67.7% have access to primary medical attention in clinics in the ten block radius, regarding hospitals the percentage drops dramatically to 7%.

Godin: Everyone will want to beat Uruguay

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin accepts Uruguay will be the team to beat in 2014 FIFA World Cup™ qualifying following their Copa America triumph earlier this year. Godin helped 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay win their continental competition in Argentina in July and, with five-time world champions and 2014 hosts Brazil not having to qualify, Godin believes his side will be targeted.

«Every team will want to beat us,» the 25-year-old centre-back ahead of tomorrow’s opener against Bolivia in Montevideo. «We’re the rivals to defeat at this time. We know we’re in that position and we have to continue on the same path. Bolivia will keep things very tight, looking to defend their goal. We know it will be very tough to find that first goal that can open up the match, but if we do what we know, and we play as we have been playing, we can break down their defence.»

Four automatic spots will be available for the nine South American teams contesting qualification, plus a play-off berth against a CONCACAF representative for the fifth-placed team. Group favourites Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, kick off their campaign against Chile in Buenos Aires. The Chileans qualified in style for last year’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa, finishing in second spot – only one point behind Brazil. Their coach Marcelo Bielsa has since been replaced by fellow Argentinian Claudio Borghi, but the heart of the team remains the same.

Paraguay coach Francisco Arce will send his side out looking to attack Peru in Lima. After qualifying for the last four successive FIFA World Cups – a feat achieved by only Argentina and Brazil of the South American teams – Paraguay again look strong. «Despite being the visitors, we will look for the victory,» Arce said. «I expect a good match, because Peru – like us – also have some technically gifted players. «We have a shirt to defend; we have a status and players who are used to facing qualifiers. They know how to take us to a World Cup.»

The fourth match to be held tomorrow will see Ecuador take on Venezuela in Quito. The Ecuadorians reached the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups but missed out on a spot in South Africa last summer after finishing a point behind Uruguay. Manchester United and Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia said: «The target is to qualify for Brazil 2014, so we have to start winning on Friday. We have to show football and character to win. We have to think within the national team and as a whole country that want to go to Brazil.»

Venezuela were for many years considered one of the continent’s weaker teams, but they have now left that tag well and truly behind. And, boosted by their run to the Copa America semi-finals over the summer, they plan to fight for at least a play-off spot. Defender Fernando Amorebieta said: «Ecuador are very tough rivals, even more so at their home, but we have proved in the past we can beat them, and we want to win this match.»

CFK and Scioli inaugurate hospital in La Matanza

The head of State was present today in La Matanza alongside Buenos Aires province Governor Daniel Scioli to inaugurate the Ciudad Evita hospital, dedicated to the vice-governor Alberto Balestrini.

Alongside the President were: Health Minister Juan Manzur, Mayor Fernando Espinoza and family members of Balestrini, who remains in recovery from brain damage following an accident last year.

Just sixteen days from the presidential elections, Fernández de Kirchner renewed her promise to “continue deepening the great transformation” of the country and stated, “this is the Argentina that we are structurally changing with our own ideas and projects.”

During her speech, Fernández de Kirchner said that, “in 100 years two hospitals had been opened in La Matanza, and in 2003 we opened the third,” on opening the health centre, anticipating that in 2012 they were to begin works to construct three more.

Balestrini, the former mayor of La Matanza has been in hospital since April 2010 after suffering an accident which caused vascular brain damage (ACV), for which he is undergoing a slow and arduous recovery.

Corinthians: No plans for Tevez deal

Corinthians are not looking to make another move for Carlos Tevez, according to general manager Edu.
The Brazilian club made a bid for Tevez this summer after he expressed his desire to leave Manchester City, but ran out of time to complete a deal.
Since then, the 27-year-old Argentina international has made only two starts for City and was last week suspended by them following his alleged refusal to come on as a substitute in the Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich .
It has left his future at the Premier League club uncertain, but Edu – the former Arsenal and Brazil midfielder – says that as things stand, Corinthians are not thinking about renewing their interest in the forward, who left them to join West Ham in 2006.
«At the moment there are no plans to try and sign him again,» Edu told the BBC.
«I’m starting to think about our new squad for 2012 and I’ve talked to our coach (Tite) about what we need – but Tevez was not mentioned.
«We are always interested in world class players like Carlos but you need to analyse if it’s right for you at that time to try to sign him or not. We have not spoken to him or his agent.»
Edu has been at the Leaders in Football conference in London this week, where Tevez’s advisor Kia Joorabchian on Wednesday insisted the striker did not refuse to play for City in Munich, claiming that post-match comments by the player suggesting he had done so were mistranslated by a club interpreter.
Referring to the events in the Bayern match, Edu said: «It is very strange for me to hear that he refused to come on.
«Every player knows that sometimes you have to be on bench, you work for the team whether you’re playing or not.
«They pay him to work for the team whether he plays or not. I was a player and I can understand that sometimes it doesn’t feel good to be on the bench, but if he decided not to play that was a very bad decision.»
He added: «As things stand, we have not considered going for Tevez.
«On Wednesday I spoke to our club president (Andres Sanchez) to see if he wanted me to make contact and start negotiations while I’m over in Europe but he said no, it’s up to you to decide.
«Of course, that could change. It’s nice to be over here to see the real situation of Tevez and speak to people about him.
«Then we can start to decide if it’s right for us to try again.
«I was talking to Manchester City in July and we tried to buy him for 40million euros but the negotiations were not easy.
«We needed to arrange bank guarantees and other things. To organise all of that in two or three days (before the Brazilian transfer window closed) was very difficult. That’s why we lost him.»

CIA’s vaccine ruse in Pakistan carries fallout

The phony campaign was aimed at helping find and kill Osama bin Laden, but the doctor involved now faces treason charges, and real immunization workers say Pakistanis don’t trust them.

A phony vaccination campaign orchestrated by the CIA to help find and kill Osama bin Laden is undercutting Western-backed immunization drives against polio and other diseases, and now has the Pakistani doctor involved in the program possibly facing treason charges.

A Pakistani government commission investigating the U.S. raid that killed Bin Laden in May recommended late Thursday that treason charges be filed against Dr. Shakeel Afridi, who helped carry out the fake vaccination effort designed to obtain DNA evidence from the Al Qaeda leader’s sprawling compound in Abbottabad.

If Afridi is charged and convicted, he could face the death penalty. U.S. officials have been seeking the doctor’s release since his arrest in May by Pakistani intelligence agents and have defended the ruse, arguing that extraordinary measures were needed to track down the world’s most wanted terrorist.

The secret operation to gather evidence from Bin Laden’s compound took place in the weeks preceding the May 2 U.S. raid and was masked as a vaccination drive for the hepatitis B virus. It is not known when Afridi, at the time the chief surgeon for the Khyber region in Pakistan’s volatile tribal areas, was recruited by the CIA.

One of Afridi’s nurses was able to get inside Bin Laden’s compound but was unable to obtain the samples needed for a comparison to DNA the U.S. government had on file from other members of the Bin Laden family.

The ruse not only compounded Pakistan’s anger toward America over the raid but also hampered efforts by Pakistani and Western aid organizations involved in real vaccination campaigns, a worrying development in a country where poor sanitation and lack of adequate healthcare aggravate the spread of disease.

Aid teams heading polio vaccination drives reported that more parents were refusing to allow their children to be vaccinated after news of the CIA ruse.

The phony campaign’s repercussions on polio vaccinations is particularly alarming because Pakistan is one of four countries where the disease is still considered endemic, according to the World Health Organization. This year, 100 new cases of polio have been recorded in Pakistan, according to WHO statistics.

Pakistani health officials say many parents in rural areas or impoverished city districts resist immunizing their children, often because they are misled by fundamentalist clerics who erroneously assert that the vaccines lead to infertility or contain substances extracted from pigs and are thus forbidden by Islam.

The CIA ruse compounded the problem, said Irfan Ali Shah, a senior health official involved in polio vaccination drives in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

«This sort of operation certainly has adversely affected our immunization efforts,» Shah said. «People do have reservations because of it, and we are trying to counter that. This sort of thing never should happen when there’s active immunization going on in the country.»

Fallout from the phony vaccination drive has also severely hampered the work of several Western aid organizations in Pakistan, which say they have been harassed by Pakistani intelligence agents suspicious of the groups’ affiliations. Some groups have reported difficulties in getting visas renewed for their workers.

«To live and work and get permission to do anything has become more difficult,» said Pascal Cuttat, the departing head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Pakistan, during a news conference in Geneva in July. «Everyone is struggling with the bureaucracy.»

International aid groups are especially concerned about the lasting perceptions the CIA ruse will leave in places like Pakistan, where the public is already deeply suspicious of Western intentions. Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian group, called the phony campaign «a dangerous abuse of medical care.»

«The risk is that vulnerable communities — anywhere — needing access to essential health services will understandably question the true motivation of medical workers and humanitarian aid,» the group’s president, Unni Karunakara, said in a statement released this summer. «The potential consequence is that even basic healthcare, including vaccination, does not reach those who need it most.»

Rugby World Cup: Beginner’s guide to Argentina

Argentina take on the All Blacks tomorrow for a place in the World Cup semifinals. Most New Zealand fans hope it is the last time Los Pumas are sighted at this tournament, so Pat McKendry of APNZ gives a beginner’s guide to the South American side.

In the beginning

The first rugby match in Argentina was played in 1873 after British immigrants brought the game to the South American country. The first international was played in 1910 when a side managed by Oxford University – supposedly the England national team, but including three Scottish players – toured Argentina. The touring side were dubbed the «Combined British», or «Great Britain XV», and beat Argentina 28-3.

The Lions toured in 1927, winning all nine games including all four tests.

It helped popularise the game in Argentina, even though it was five years before another international team, South Africa, toured. Argentina played their first away test in 1936 against Chile, which was also their first test win (29-0).

Mistaken identity

The puma is the mascot of Argentina, but the animal on the front of the jersey is a jaguar. The cat confusion has its roots in 1965 when Argentina first toured South Africa – their first overseas trip as a team.

There are a few explanations for why they became known as the Pumas on that tour. One is that a South African newspaper reporter confused the two animals while under deadline pressure, the other is that «puma» is simply easier for an English speaker to understand than «jaguar» when translated from Spanish. Either way, it stuck and was adopted by the Argentines.

All Blacks loose forward Adam Thomson did well this week when put on the spot and asked about his knowledge of the puma, although a fair proportion of the following sounded like a bluff.

«It likes to hunt by itself, ambush attacks and it has big claws,» he said. «It goes for the neck and will choke its victim out usually.»

A bit like the way their forwards play, then.

For the record

Graham Henry would be out of a job if he posted these sorts of numbers but Argentina have won an impressive 59 per cent of their internationals. Admittedly some have been against powerhouses like Chile, Venezuela and Spain but they have also registered wins over Australia (four out of 17 games), England (four from 17), France (11 from 44), Ireland (five from 12), Scotland (nine from 13) and Wales (four from 13).

The only teams they haven’t beaten are New Zealand (0 from 13 but with 1 draw), South Africa (0 from 13) and the Lions (0 from 7).

World Cups

The Pumas have played at every World Cup since the first in 1987, but the last in 2007 was their best when they finished third.

They beat France twice in that tournament – the first in the tournament opener and the second in the play-off for third and fourth (when they won 34-10).

Their other tournament of note was 1999 when they made the quarter-finals only to lose 47-26 to, you guessed it, France.

Argentina have played the All Blacks once at a World Cup – in a pool game in Wellington in 1987 when New Zealand won 46-15.

Home away from home

The majority of Argentina’s top players play professionally in England or France – 23 of the 30-man World Cup squad play in Europe – although this could change with the introduction of Argentina into the Four Nations from next year. European clubs have agreed to release their Argentine players for the tournament but more will be tempted to play Super 15. Leicester prop Marcos Ayerza told media this week he would be keen to have a crack at Super 15.

Despite the diaspora, 18 of the World Cup squad were born in the nation’s capital Buenos Aires. The next most favoured place of birth is Rosario, the third largest city in Argentina, where five of the squad were born.

Doctor who

As a qualified doctor, Felipe Contepomi is used to life-or-death situations, which is probably why he was so calm as he kicked the last-minute conversion which clinched the all-important victory over Scotland at Wellington’s Cake Tin. A first five-eighths who has been compared to Dan Carter by former Argentina halfback Augustin Pichot, Contepomi plays for Stade Francais in the French top 14 competition.

The 34-year-old has a twin brother, Manuel, a centre who has also played for the Pumas. In 2007, while playing for Leinster in the Magners League, he collected his degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and worked at Beaumont Hospital, in Dublin. Contepomi and his father, also a doctor, recently opened an orthopaedic medical centre in Buenos Aires.

He is one of three in the squad to have represented Argentina at the 1999, 2003 and 2007 World Cups.

UNLUCKY 13

The All Blacks struggled to a 24-20 win in Buenos Aires in 2001, courtesy of a late Scott Robertson try. Argentina have never beaten the All Blacks in 13 attempts since their first meeting in 1985, although they have come close.

New Zealand have dominated tests in this country, including a 93-8 romp at Athletic Park in 1997, but it has been a lot tighter when the All Blacks have travelled to South America.

The second test played between the two sides in Buenos Aires ended 21-21 when the great Hugo Porta kicked four penalties and three dropped goals to match the All Blacks in an era of four-point tries. The All Blacks tries were scored by John Kirwan (2), Craig Green and Murray Mexted.

In 2001, Scott «Razor» Robertson wrote himself into All Blacks folklore by scoring the winning try in Buenos Aires. With only a minute to go and the All Blacks trailing by three points, the loose forward finished the movement which broke 70,000 Argentine hearts at Estadio Monumental Antonio V Liberti, also known as the River Plate Stadium.

«I took the lineout ball and as I was running along one of the Argentine guys tripped over me and I just stood up and stayed there,» Robertson said this week.

«I ended up standing outside [fullback] Ben Blair. They chased across, we held our width, and Benny gave me a great ball and the rest is history. It was great.»

PORTA CALL

You know you’ve made it when your car is stolen and thieves return it 24 hours later once they read who they have taken it from. Welcome to the world of Hugo Porta, a rugby hero from a country that worships soccer players.

The carjacking incident occurred in Buenos Aires in 2000, long after Porta had retired from international rugby in 1990. «I was just arriving home and they chased me and took my car,» Porta told the UK’s Daily Telegraph. It’s important to know Porta’s body language as he told the story to the reporter – a shrug, a smile and a laugh. «They threatened me with the gun. The problem is when somebody is pointing at you with a gun, you think: ‘If they pull the trigger, everything is going to be over’. It’s stressing.»

Porta was hardly ever stressed on the field, which probably explains his calmness in facing someone with a pistol.

His playing career spanned an amazing 19 years and 36 days, and he is widely considered as being in the top 10 of first five-eighths who have ever played. He was capped 48 times and scored a record 590 points for Argentina.

When he retired from rugby, he became Argentina’s ambassador to South Africa following a job offer from President Carlos Menem.

Porta, now aged 60, told the Daily Telegraph: «It was amazing. My life really changed completely. The only directions I had from the President were: ‘You go there, you work hard, I am sure you will find some rugby friends and you will build up a team’. In the beginning it was very tough, but I am proud to say we did it from scratch.

«I never thought I would talk to the Pope, Yasser Arafat, Fidel Castro in the course of a day’s work. And with Nelson Mandela, I had a very good relationship. I was decorated by him when I left. He invited me and my wife to tea at his house and he told me: ‘I want to make you a decoration on behalf of South Africa, but as you are a friend I don’t want to do it with protocol’. That was great for me.»

He held the ambassador’s post for four years before returning to Argentina as Sports Minister.

Vestas Wind Systems : Vestas inaugurates new office in Buenos Aires

On Friday, Vestas officially inaugurated a new sales and operations office in Buenos Aires located in the heart of the new city’s business district in Puerto Madero.

The brand-new office is located in a corporate, modern and technologically advanced building. Most of Vestas’ customers operating in Argentina, energy regulating bodies and the main financial entities in the country are based in this area.

Vestas has been operating in Argentina since 1992 and is currently installing the largest wind farm in the country, Rawson I & II Wind Farm in Chubut, which has been inaugurated on the same day by the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, in an official ceremony taking place on-site. At its completion, this power plant will have an estimated annual production of 320 GWh corresponding to the annual residential electricity consumption of approx 150,000 households in the country.

Together with the already existing Vestas’ set-up in Chile and Brazil, the new office in Buenos Aires will strengthen the development of new business opportunities in Argentina as well as in the South American region. Already now Argentina is planning another 754 MW of wind power in the coming years.

Marcelo Tokman Ramos, Vice President South America (excluding Brazil) and Head of Government Relations in Latin America, who will lead this new sales unit, declared:

“This is a clear evidence of Vestas’ continuous commitment to Argentina and to the promotion of wind power in the country and the region. We are very proud to be the pioneers in the development of this industry and to take the responsibility of providing the best technology and building the largest wind power plant in Argentina.»

Suspects in French tourists double murder case ‘show psychotic behaviour’

At least two of the three suspects currently under arrest in connection to the murder of two French tourists in the Salta province last July, show signs of “psychotic, fabulist” behaviour, police authorities indicated.
Experts came to the conclusion that the behaviour of Gustavo Lassi and Daniel Vilte Laxe was that of a “psychotic, fabulist” person,” after several tests were ran on all suspects.
The four suspects in prison are thought to be responsible of the rape and murder of French tourists Cassandre Bouvier (29) and Houria Moumnie (23), last July 15th.
The exam results, which were released by judge Martín Pérez, also complicates the situation of a third suspect, Santos Vera.
Studies have shown that Lasi’s personality “has a double standard and moral,” and he is also “a psychopath, cold, manipulative.”
He also has a “perverted language.”
At the same time, Vilte Laxi is “cold and addicted to the paco drug, he is an alcoholic, likes to break the rules and feels no guilt.”
The report then explains that Santos Clemente Vera “does not speak spontaneously, thinks every words he says, has a double standard and moral.”
Forensic reports indicate that Lasi and Vera are the ones who raped Bouvier and Moumnie, who were caught by surprise as they were walking around the Quebrada de San Lorenzo area.

De Narváez breaks off deal with Alfonsín, campaigns alongside Rodríguez Saá

Union for Social Development gubernatorial candidate Francisco De Narváez seems to have definitely ended his political deal with the Radical Party and headed a rally alongside new political partner and presidential candidate Alberto Rodríguez Saá.

The businessman and the current San Luis province governor met with a group of the Juan Domingo Perón neigbourhood, in the Greater Buenos Aires area of Villa Caraza, ahead of the October 23rd elections. “The aim is to gather the support of the 53 percent of those Buenos Aires residents that didn’t vote for the Kirchnerite candidates,” Rodríguez Saá and De Narvaez said in a statement.

Both candidates explained their plans far from the Radical Party’s support and stated that “we need to give Buenos Aires province more autonomy and coordinate the national and provincial security forces to fight against crimes.”

De Narváez joined forces with Ricardo Alfonsín and the Radical Party to form the Union for Social Development, but the poor results in the August primaries, in which President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner gathered 50, 24 percent of votes and Daniel Scioli came in first in the race for Buenos Aires province gubernatorial bid, weakened the alliance to a point no return.

Argentina’s Galeno To Pay $59.4M For Accident Insurer Consolidar

BUENOS AIRES (Dow Jones)–Argentine health insurer Galeno Argentina SA has signed an agreement to buy workplace accident insurance company Consolidar Aseguradora de Riesgos de Trabajo SA in a deal valued at $59.4 million, according to one of the parties involved in the deal.

In a filing with the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange on Thursday, banking group BBVA Banco Frances SA (FRAN.BA, BFR) said its share of the proceeds from the sale is equivalent to its 12.5% equity stake in Consolidar.

The deal is subject to standard closing procedures, including authorization by Argentina’s insurance regulator, Banco Frances said.

Galeno’s diversificaton into workplace accident insurance, which is mandatory for most employers, comes as the prepaid health insurance industry faces a big increase in costs and government oversight.

In May, Congress passed sweeping health-care legislation that greatly expands the federal government’s oversight of health-insurance companies in a move that critics say might bankrupt the private medical system.

The most onerous provisions would require health insurers to accept clients with pre-existing medical conditions, force companies to provide full care from the first day of coverage, and freeze premiums for clients over the age of 65 who have been insured for at least 10 years.

The government will also vet premium increases and set the minimum fees insurers must pay to medical-care providers.

Shares of Banco Frances, which is majority owned by Spain’s Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA (BBVA), were recently trading up 0.9% lower at $5.53 in New York.

Two injured after building fire in Coghlan

Two men were injured this morning, one severely so, after a fire broke out following an explosion inside a printing press building in the city neighbourhood of Coghlan, police sources informed.
One of the men, aged 29, was admitted to Pirovano hospital to be treated for severe burns covering seventy percent of his body, while the other man who suffered minor injuries, was taken to another health centre, SAME ambulance head Alberto Crescenti confirmed.
Crescenti explained that «a tank exploded» inside the building, although the contents of the tank were «overlooked.»
The fire broke out following an explosion which occurred at approximately 6.30 am this morning inside the building, which has access points from Iberá 3485 and another from Roque Pérez 3141, where fire fighters were working to control the flames.

CGT blasts Judiciary over Sobrero case

The CGT labour confederation harshly criticized a sector of the Judicial branch after the conflict triggered by the arrest of the railway union leader Rubén “Pollo” Sobrero.

The union’s charge against judges and judicial officials was headed by Hugo Moyano, who broke the silence on Thursday. The truck driver assured that the “judiciary came off badly” in the investigation over the burning of Sarmiento line trains.

“The Judge (Juan Manuel Yalj) did not have enough elements to detain him, and the CGT knew that Sobrero had nothing to do with it. The Judiciary came off badly,” he continued.

Moyano defended the union leader, he said “I know him, it’s unthinkable that he could destroy his tools” of work.
