Man dies in Santa Lucía hospital blaze

A maintenance man was killed and another had to be hospitalized after a fire broke out in the Santa Lucía hospital, the director of the institution said.

The fire started a few minutes after noon, while the maintenance staff was working on the Santa Lucía’s cooling tower, located on San Juan Av. 2000, in the San Cristobal neighbourhood.

Fernández Rey explained that “due to causes that remain unknown, a spark created a fire, for which the hospital’s staff and patients were immediately evacuated.”

“Unfortunately we must confirm the death of a 37-year old man who was part of our maintenance staff,” she said, and added that a second man who was working in that area was taken to the Burn Victim’s Hospital where he was treated for non-threatening burns on his body.
