President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner took office as the temporary head of the Mercosur bloc and highlighted that “we must have a vision beyond the commercial one, we have to rely on the region to know that we have to protect each other.”
The Head of State reminded during the Mercosur Summit that “it’s the tenth anniversary of the day in which more than 35 Argentines died” in Argentina, referring to the violent clash of the police and protesters on December 19-20 of 2001.
Fernández de Kirchner also assured that the Malvinas Islands sovereignty case “is a global one” and once more called the United Kingdom for “dialogue.”
“I want to thank the immense solidarity for Malvinas. This support is not only for Argentina, but in self-defence because they are taking away the mineral and oil resources and when they’ll need more they are going to look for them anywhere,” she continued.
In her speech, the president added that the UK “does not respect any of the resolution” of the international organizations.
Fernández de Kirchner was received by Mujica early Tuesday at the entrance to the Mercosur building, where Venezuela President Hugo Chávez, Rafael Correa (Ecuador), Dilma Rousseff (Brazil), and Fernando Lugo (Paraguay) were present.
The President arrived shortly after 1 pm after leaving from the military sector of the Aeroparque Metropolitan airport aboard a Tanto 01 plane, alongside Industry Minister, Débora Giorgi and the future ambassador to Venezuela, Carlos Cheppi.
Meanwhile Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and Economy Minister Hernán Lorenzino were already in Uruguay attending the summit.
