Monsignor José María Arancedo.
Santa Fe’s Archbishop, Monsignor José María Arancedo, has been elected by his counterparts as the new head of the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA) for the next three years. He will replace Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio who has presided the congregation for over six years.
The election was held during the second day of bishops’ meeting in the Buenos Aires province locality of Pilar.
Neuquen’s Archbishop Virginio Bressanelli has been elected as the first vice-president, while Salta’s Mario Cargnello will head the second one.
Arancedo was one of the strongest candidate. He is considered from the «moderate» wing, and is brother cousin of late Argentine president Raúl Alfonsín.
