‘I was victim of a political persecution,’ Menem on gun-running case

Former President Carlos Menem assured that the trial for alleged gunrunning to Ecuador and Croatia, in which he was acquitted, was “absolutely unfair” and claimed he was “a victim of a political persecution.»

In his first appearance after the court’s ruling, Menem dismissed the possibility of filing a lawsuit against ex judge Jorge Ursso, who ordered his detention.

«We who take part of the political world know we must be prepared to face these type of situations. We take this kind of risks when we dedicate our lives to reach with our help and our proposals to the people we govern,” the senator said.

“There was an extensive political persecution. I´m glad this absolutely unfair trial, with had no foundation, is over.”

Regarding ex judge Ursso, who ordered his detention, Menem dismissed the possibility of filing a lawsuit. “I am not a man who persecutes people. I only have love in my heart.”

“I dictated a pardon against those who kept me imprisoned for almost six years (during the military dictatorship), without the possibility of saying good bye to my mother when she passed away. Like many things I went through, I’ve never had thirst of revenge. I have been in the political world for a long time and I will die carrying, through politics, a message of hope for the people of my province and of my country,” Menem concluded.
