Renewal Front leader Sergio Massa has dispelled the doubts and rumours over his future by affirming that he remains in the race to succeed President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in this year’s elections for head of state.
After weeks of speculation that the former Tigre mayor would abandon the presidential race, Massa affirmed this evening in a press conference that he would be fighting the August PASO primary elections under his own name.
«I want to say to those millions of Argentines who put their hopes in us that I am going to be president and I am going to be candidate for president of the Argentine people,» Massa told reporters, confirming his intention to run.
Massa also had strong words for presidential rivals in the conference, which took place in the Tigre Art Museum with mayors, national and provincial legislators of the Renewal Front conspicuous by their absence.
«Scioli does not say what he thinks because Cristina might tell him off. Others talk about change but we have to define what change we want. We believe Argentina needs change and we want to be the vehicle of that change,» the lawmaker fired.
The candidate linked Scioli and Massa to the «apparatus» and compared their electoral structure to the Renewal Front’s, which he said was a group of officials «with values and ideas, a team convinced about what kind of country we could have.»
«The Argentina political electoral system favours ruling parties and apparatus. It is not a complaint, it is a description of reality. We do not have a state apparatus,» he fired.
While refusing to take questions in the conference, Massa revealed that in the coming months the Renewal Front would be committed to explaining its «proposals, projects and ideas, and debating how Argentina will find a better path towards the future.»
