Lorenzetti praises ability of judiciary to do politics

The President of the Supreme Court, Ricardo Lorenzetti, has praised the capacity of the judiciary to influence politics, during a conference for the World Environment Day.
“One should not be afraid when people say the judiciary does politics, because the judiciary does in fact put forward public policies,” Lorenzetti said.
Lorenzetti’s statements follow the conflict between the Supreme Court and the government over the health of Supreme Court member Carlos Fayt and over his own reelection as President of Argentina’s top court. Lorenzetti said the country needs a united Supreme Court, one that is integrated by ideals and not corporatism.
“People and countries need strong, independent judicial branches. We have to be independent, this has to be respected. The judiciary has to be independent from the government, the state and corporations. Not everyone has stood strong against corporations as we have,” he said.
