Arsenal de Sarandí were trailing 1-0 at home to Aldosivi when the teams’ Primera División clash was suspended after 30 minutes, due to serious disturbances outside the Estadio Julio Humberto Grondona this evening.
Referee Ariel Penel halted play on the half hour when fighting broke out between rival factions of the Arsenal ‘barra brava’ hooligan grouping. Video footage showed fans throwing stones at a police squad car and smashing the windscreen in the streets surrounding the stadium.
The two sides stayed on the pitch briefly while Penel consulted with authorities, but the game was postponed definitely when the chief of the police operation admitted that he could not guarantee security.
Diego Lagos had scored the only goal of the game at the time of the referee’s intervention, with 23 minutes played.
