‘Stiusso told Nisman to take care of himself’

Diego Lagomarsino, the Prosecutor’s Office employee who lent Alberto Nisman shortly before his death, has revealed that the AMIA investigator received a message from former Intelligence Secretariat chief ‘Jaime’ Stiuso’ telling him to look after himself.

The computer technician released a letter through a judge to Página 12, which printed the contents on today’s edition.

«I am not an intelligence agent, I have never met Jaime Stiusso nor have I anything to do with him,» Lagomarsino emphasised in his statement. He also revealed the conversation he held with Nisman when the prosecutor asked for the .22 calibre pistol later found with his lifeless body on Sunday evening.

«He told me it was for security. The previous day Stiusso had called,» warning him to «take care of his security detail and his daughters’ safety,» he said.

Logomarsino arrived at the Le Parc apartment block in Puerto Madero, where he often met in Nisman’s home. The prosecutor’s bodyguards told him of the technician’s entry and he was not subjected to any type of search. The individual admitted feeling guilt over the episode, as at that time he did not imagine it would be inappropriate to lend someone under intense pressure a weapon.

«Right now Diego is crying all the time. He is destroyed and he feels responsible,» the magistrate who received Lagomarsino’s letter told the same newspaper, confirming the version of events in the letter as coherent with the testimony she had heard.

«Basically he did not think at that time. He wonders how he did not realise Nisman must have had easy access to securing a firearm and he did not think why he was asked. He also thinks now it was strange Nisman asked him for something for safety when he had such extensive security. But of course, Stiuso supposedly recommended that he should not put much faith in his bodyguards.»

The judge added that a previous meeting between the two occurred one day before the prosecutor presented his accusation against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and other government figures for covering up the AMIA bombing.

«That day he thought strange what Nisman said: ‘This is something I have to do, I have no choice’,» she said.
