As an early-morning strike by transport unions came to its end today, Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich said that Argentina’s working class is the most affected by the walkout and asked union leaders for “understanding” and “solidarity.”
“The state has made unprecedented investments (…) and the government calls for understanding because (transport workers) have had improvement of their purchasing power, salary improvements and better working conditions,” the chief of ministers said in a joint press conference with Economy Minister Axel Kicillof. “You can’t have it all,” he added.
Public transport unions launched a 3-hour strike to protest the government’s decision to not exempt the salary bonus workers are paid twice a year – in July and December -, from the income tax scheme.
“We seek no controversy, only to make workers understand and take into account the effort made by the state,” Capitanich said.
“I want to remind unions that this strike mostly affects workers,” the official stated. “We are all workers, solidarity from transport workers is important.”
