Sarmiento’s Sobrero confirms strike, warns measures will continue

Union representative of the Sarmiento train service line Rubén “Pollo” Sobrero ratified Thursday’s strike warning force measures were likely to continue if the government does not meet workers’ demands.
“Our decision is to give continuity to force measures if there is no response (from the government),” Sobrero told reporters this morning renewing demands for a year-end bonus. The sector is seeking to call the government’s «attention» with tomorrow’s walkout, he added, to force authorities to sit at the negotiating table and “discuss” a salary bonus to cope with soaring inflation.
“We have moderately high salaries and most of our workers end up paying an income for working,” Sobrero said now questioning Argentina’s income tax regime, which President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner yesterday refused to update urging opposition leaders to “show” her how they would finance public works without tax money.
Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich, meanwhile, today ratified Ms. Kirchner’s statements saying income tax affects workers who “earn most.”
“Workers pay tax everywhere; we have paid enough with the IVA (tax), we are not like businessmen. I think income tax must be eliminated, it is insane having to pay a tax to work,” Sobrero responded back.
