Capitanich says ‘no objective reason’ for December chaos

Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich said there are no signs of social upheaval as the one seen last December despite recent protests by trade unions and a renewed labour dispute with police officers.

“There is no objective reason for this sort of problems,” Capitanich said when asked about possible disputes with provincial police officers, as the government moves to prevent a repeat of the scenario that broke out last year in various provinces as the officers embarked on a strike in demand of salary hikes.

“What happened on December 2, 2013, which broke out in Córdoba and expanded to other provinces, was clearly a strategy for a coup d’Etat., a case of sedition, punishable by the Criminal Code and the Constitution,” the chief of ministers said in his daily press briefing at the government house.

Capitanich also refused to consider the recent protests by several trade unions demanding a year-end bonus as a sign of trouble. He reiterated the government’s refusal to reopen collective wage talks or to reform the income tax floor.
