Gov’t declares 5-day mandatory conciliation on UOM strike

Labour Ministry dictated today a five-day mandatory conciliation on the Metallurgical Workers’ Union (UOM) strike.

UOM went on a national strike today, demanding steel companies to pay salary agreed on last wage talks, which included a 27.2 percent salary rise.

Antonio Caló, secretary-general of the UOM and leader of the government-allied CGT umbrella union said earlier the strike had been decided «due to the refusal of metallurgical companies belonging to the Techint group – led by Paolo Rocca – and Arcelor Mittal to negotiate wages according to the national agreement and workers’ needs.»
