The head of pro-government CGT umbrella labour union and leader of the UOM metalworkers union Antonio Caló asserted today that workers “have their job possitions secured until June,” after automobile companies announced personnel suspensions this week.
“At the moment we’re trying to avoid firings (granting) two-month suspensions and (allowing) workers to make 70% of their salaries,” Caló said and added that 1,000 UOM workers have been suspended so far.
The General Motors plant in the city of Rosario in the province of Santa Fe will join next week the list of companies that decided to suspend their employees, along with Volkswagen, Peugeot, Iveco, Fiat and Renault.
Caló blamed the suspensions on Brazil “that stopped buying cars” but he referred to Argentineans too, “who also stopped buying.”
In a more positive tone, the union leader said to Radio El Mundo: “Until June, job possitions are secured. Ngotiations with Brazil are on the right track.”
