Prior to a new round of parliamentary debate over Argentina’s new Civil Code, 21 out of the 24 senators who were elected to Congress back in October’s midterms were sworn in this morning. Three legislators representing the province of Salta have been impeached and did not take oath of office.
PRO party Gabriela Michetti and Diego Santilli, PRO-aligned and farming leader Alfredo De Ángeli and UNEN Fernando “Pino” Solanas were among the first legislators to arrive at Congress.
“We are the first PRO senators. There are many pending issues regarding the city (of Buenos Aires) and the country we hope we can address,” Santilli told reporters and pointed out the bloc commanded by Buenos Aires City Mayor Mauricio Macri will be “working along with Alfredo de Ángeli as well as other political forces” in order to “resolve problems such as inflation, foreign exchange and security.”
The ceremony was presided over by Vice-President Amado Boudou.
Rodolfo Urtubey, María Cristina Fiore and Juan Carlos Romero will be not be taking their senate oath as the Electoral Court of the Salta province did not address their tender documents to the Constitutional Affairs Committee.
