‘Mostaza’ Merlo returns to Racing for third spell

Mostaza MerloCoach Reinaldo ‘Mostaza’ Merlo has been confirmed as the new head of crisis-hit Inicial strugglers Racing Club, and asserted that it gave him «great joy» to be back in Avellaneda for his third spell with The Academy.

The trainer, who in 2001 was the last man to lead Racing to a championship win with victory in the Apertura of that year, was confirmed as the successor to Carlos Ischia today after meeting with club president Victor Blanco.

The two exited together from the meeting, and Merlo told gathered reporters: «Luckily all has gone well. It gives me great joy for Racing to have recruited me once more. The directors’ call surprised me, but we reached a rapid agreement.»

«On Monday afternoon I will take my first practice with El Polaco [assistant René Daulte],» the experienced tactician revealed. Interim coach Ignacio Gonzalez, therefore, will be at the helm for the weekend’s clash away to Estudiantes.
