Carlotto calls to ‘investigate’ Milani instead of making presumptions

CarlottoHead of Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo Estela de Carlotto has called to “investigate” the newly appointed chief of the Armed Forces César Milani, allegedly connected with state terrorism during Argentina’s darkest period.

Carlotto was requested for comments aver a media report that linked Milani with the repression apparatus of the 1976-1983 civil-military dictatorship. The president of the world renowned organization said she could not yet “venture” an opinion and pointed out the Grandmothers had no “records to accuse” Milani. Still, she agreed “Justice and the State” must act when it comes to such serious allegations.

Argentine Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel has held a much more firm stance over the Milani case considering that “all signs show he had been involved in the repression period.”

Although Carlotto ratified the accusations “don’t go irrelevant” for her, she demanded accusers to provide “data” and “evidence” to prove the charges.

César Milani’s service record shows he was in the province of Tucumán when the so called “Independence Operation” was carried out by the security forces as a TV news show alleged. But Carlotto insisted on her position: “If we presumed that every member (of the Armed Forces) is involved in repressive actions, then we would have to trial all members since they were all (deploted) at some place,” the human rights leader affirmed.

On Sunday the local TV news show Periodismo Para Todos hosted by reporter Jorge Lanata broadcast an investigation report allegedly unveiling César Milani’s connection with violence and torture practices during the dictatorship and accusing the new head of the Armed Forces of amassing a controversial little fortune.
