Train crash in Castelar; at least 3 dead, 315 injured

TrainAt least three people died and 315 were injured this morning after two trains collided in the locality of Castelar in the province of Buenos Aires. Emergency teams and rescue workers raced against the clock to help people who remained trapped.

At around 7 am, a train of the ex Sarmiento service crashed against another one stopped at the rails in the crossing gate of Zapiola Street.

The Communications Director of the UGOMS Sarmiento operation union said “several people were injured and others died” although he was not able to confirm any death toll. National Security Secretary Sergio Berni was heading the operation.

Meanwhile, Mayor of the Morón district Lucas Ghi considered the situation “serious” following the increasing number of injured and assured teams from Civil Defence and the SAME medical emergency system were assisting people there. SAME head Alberto Crescenti said seven ambulances and a helicopter have been deployed at the accident scene.

“I live just in front of the station. We woke up with a terrible explosion. A train crashed against another one. There is people trapped and it took 20 minutes for the police to arrive,” a neighbor named Adriana told TV news networks covering the accident.
