‘Actions are sacred, comments are free,’ Fayt to CFK

Carlos FaytSupreme Court Judge Carlos Fayt responded to President CFK who considered him “the almost centennial member of the Court» yesterday. “Actions are sacred, comments are free,” Fayt said.

The 95-year old judge made one of his guards to deliver the brief written message to the press keeping watch outside his house as they waited for his reply.

“The National Constitution establishes an age limit of 75 years old to be part of the tribunal,” President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner wrote in her official Twitter account alluding to Fayt although she did not directly name him.

But prior to her Twitter comments, the head of state had already reinforced her criticism of the Judiciary system. Leading a rally in the capital city of the Santa Cruz province, Río Gallegos, she fiercely defended the government-sponsored justice reform recently signed into law by Congress.

Although the National Constitution sets a 75-year old limit for Supreme Court members, Carlos Fayt’s position has been secured trough an appeal that Argentina’s highest court itself ratified in 1999.
