Kunkel praises Bergoglio’s ‘peronist’ nature

As the national government continues to reject any “resentment” over the election of Argentine cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to head the Roman Catholic Church, now kirchnerite lawmaker Carlos Kunkel has praised Bergoglio’s “peronist” nature.

Following statements by Cabinet Chief Juan Manuel Abal Medina and Secretary General of the Presidency Oscar Parrilli, Kunkel celebrated that a “peronist pope” has become the main religious authority of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics but admitted differences exist among the political movement initiated by historic leader Juan Domingo Perón and deepened by his wife Eva Duarte who championed social and political benefits for the poor.

“How big the doctrine of Juan and Eva Perón must be that a peronist becomes Pope. We never denied his peronist condition but it is also truth that in such a wide movement there are differences in shades and perspectives,” the Victory Front lawmaker said as he recognized certain “clashes” with the Church.

“We never had problems with Bergoglio as archbishop (of Buenos Aires). There were clashes because the Church traditionally had influence in the life of Argentineans and we began to strengthen the state, recovering its role without needing to responde to certain insinuations or pressures,” Kunkel added and affirmed the ruling Victory Front has “hope” on Francis’s papacy, “something that is justified day by day through the measures” that the national government takes.
