John Michael O’Neal contó que tiene recuerdos nítidos del tiempo que pasó muerto, y que vio a Dios. «Es un ser femenino y materno, hecho de luz».
Un sacerdote católico que sufrió un ataque cardiaco afirma haber visto a Dios durante los minutos que estuvo clínicamente muerto. Lo describió como un «ser femenino y materno,hecho de luz».

El padre John Michael O’Neal, de Masssachussetts, en Estados Unidos, sufrió un ataque cardiáco y fue declarado clínicamente muerto durante casi una hora, el 29 de enero pasado.

Con la ayuda de un aparato tecnológico llamado «Lucas 2», los doctores que lo atendieron lograron seguir enviando sangre al cerebro del sacerdote, logrando revivirlo después de 48 minutos.

El anciano cura señaló que tiene memorias nítidas del tiempo que pasó muerto, entre las que se encuentran “una sensación intensa de amor incondicional y aceptación, además de estar rodeado de una luz increíble”.

En cierto punto, señaló el sacerdote, fue al cielo y vio a “Dios”, a quién describió como “un ser femenino y materno, hecho de luz”.

A pesar de que algunos de sus superiores no están del todo contentos con su descripción de una “madre santa”, el padre O’Neal declaró que seguirá ejerciendo como sacerdote y hablando de sus experiencias con ese Dios del sexo femenino que presenció.

En referencia al líder estadounidense agregó “ha llegado la hora de que rectifique de manera temprana su errada política contra Venezuela que tiene derecho a defenderse, que es antiimperialista porque nacimos combatiendo al impero español» y sostuvo que «Ni una ofensa más voy a aceptar de los Estados Unidos”.

Para Maduro, Estados Unidos sabotea el país mediante sus contactos con militares, periodistas y empresarios y por ello pidió el apoyo de los Gobiernos del mundo para las acciones que tenga que tomar en materia diplomática.

Una despedida a medida de laseguridad y comodidadrequerida por la presidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Éstos serán los ejes de la organización de la inauguración de la Asamblea Legislativa de este 1 de marzo. Desde Presidencia se decidió tomar el control del protocolo para blindar el recinto y que nada opaque el último discurso de la mandataria ante el pleno del Congreso.

Según consignó este martesÁmbito Financiero, el Palacio del Congreso tendrá medidas de seguridad excepcionales para recibir a Cristina. Lo hará en medio de un festejo de barras en los palcos y con la marcha que convocaron el kirchnerismo, intendentes y sindicalistas amigos. Los legisladores ya saben que en esta oportunidad les será difícil conseguir invitaciones a los palcos para sus allegados.

Debido a que el control de la Asamblea quedó en manos de protocolo de la Presidencia, por ahora sólo los diputados y senadores tienen garantizado el acceso al recinto el domingo. La gran diferencia de la organización de este año es, según remarca el matutino, que esta vez hasta las invitaciones para los palcos se filtran en la Casa Rosada.

En un contexto en el que aún no trascendió el contenido del discurso de Cristina -a diferencia de años anteriores-, todo indica que habrá barras en los palcos y cotillón típico de un mensaje presidencial kirchnerista, aunque aumentado esta vez por el ambiente de despedida presidencial.

En las próximas horas, se espera que la oposición informe cuál es su decisión sobre la estrategia a encarar respecto de la asistencia a la Asamblea.

‘There are judges, prosecutors working for political parties’

Former prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Luis Moreno Ocampo said that “there are judges and prosecutors working for political parties” and called for a “cleanse” of the Judiciary.
“Not all the Judiciary is corrupt. The most affected is the Judiciary investigating power, the federal criminal justice, and then there are pockets,” Moreno Ocampo said in an interview with Rivadavia radio.
The former prosecutor dismissed the idea by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of a “Judicial Party,” but he pointed out that “there are judges and prosecutors working for political parties” and he said that it has been going on for years.
Moreno Ocampo said that ex president Carlos Menem’s administration “captured” the Judicial Branch and that former president Néstor Kirchner began to change that but that the process was interrupted when former Justice Minister Gustavo Béliz resigned. “Those judges that Menem appointed are not judges. There were many who played politics for the president,” he said.
“We need to support the good (judges and prosecutors) and purge (the Judiciary) of the bad ones. It is easy, the information is there,” Moreno Ocampo added. He insisted on the importance of “making a very serious change, a deep one, so that judges are not captured by political power or corruption,” he stressed.

‘My only limit is Macri,’ Proyecto Sur senator tells the Herald

Senator Fernando “Pino” Solanas tacitly confirmed yesterday the ongoing electoral negotiations with Renewal Front leader Sergio Massa, saying his only limit for potential alliances was PRO party leader Mauricio Macri.

“We try to keep dialogue with all political forces and our political limit is Macri as he embodies corruption and neo-liberalism in Argentina,” Solanas told the Herald.

Asked about the possibility of running for BA City Mayor within Massa’s Renewal Front, the Proyecto Sur leader explained his party was having conversations with “almost” — he stressed — all political forces about major issues that the party considers central.

Officially, Solanas said, his main political alliance was the one between his political force and the small Authentic Socialist Party (PSA) headed by Mario Mazzitelli.

As versions of a surprise deal with the former Tigre mayor continue to appear in the media, Solanas justified a potential deal suggesting Massa was following an anti-corruption agenda advanced by progressive forces.

“I am the leader of a political force which is open to working with other forces holding up the same principles and the same flags against corruption and neoconservatism,” said Solanas, which is still technically part of the Broad Front-UNEN non-Peronist coalition.

Over the last few days, the Proyecto Sur senator said he and Massa shared “similar views” on a number of issues and that he would meet today with leaders of his centre-left party to discuss potential political alliances for this year’s elections.

‘We have criticized them in the past’

For her part, though confirming Proyecto Sur’s ongoing negotiations with other political forces, Proyecto Sur national lawmaker Alcira Argumedo dismissed any possibility of Solanas becoming Massa’s official candidate in BA City.

“Pino is not going to subordinate to an agreement with Massa. We have criticized several Front Renewal projects in the past,” Argumedo stated in dialogue with the Herald.

While acknowledging that Broad Front-UNEN lost strength following the agreement between Civic Coalition lawmaker Elisa Carrió and BA City mayor Mauricio Macri to run against each other in the August presidential primaries, the centre-left lawmaker stressed that Proyecto Sur was “talking” with many political forces around three central issues — hydrocarbons, commercial deals with China and the overhaul of the Intelligence services.

“We have been talking, for instance, with (Massa ally) Felipe Solá, as we have known each other for years. He was even an extra in one of Pino’s movies,” Argumedo said jokingly. “But we have criticized (Solá) for being responsible for the boost of soybean planting and the devastation of native forests.”

Unlike Solanas, Argumedo dismissed outright any chances of an electoral deal between his ally and the former Cabinet chief.“Pino is not going to run against Massa in the national primaries. And if Solanas runs in the Buenos Aires’s City mayor race, he will not be as Massa’s candidate either,” said Argumedo, who in 2011 failed to reach the final presidential race under the Proyecto Sur ticket.

However, she left the door open for a potential alliance if Massa’s Renewal Front decided to openly support the senator’s candidacy.

Doubts about the party’s future

In December, Massa surprised many by praising PRO Senator Gabriela Michetti, who had fallen out with Macri over her decision to run for the mayorship.

After economist Tomás Bullat died in a car crash in late January, his Renewal Front has not been able to find a solid BA mayor candidate.

Sources close to the former Tigre mayor reportedly acknowledged negotiations with Proyecto Sur to secure electoral deals “in six or seven provinces” as part of their national electoral front.

But analysts warned about the future of this odd couple, stressing that while the Renewal Front favoured pro-business policies, Proyecto Sur was more close to centre-left Peronist ideals of state intervention.

In 2013, Solanas had dismissed Massa as a “lighter” version of Kirchnerism. But late last year went as far as saying that Massa, Scioli and Macri were “the candidates of the establishment.”Days later, his former ally Carrió left UNEN and agreed to face PRO’s Macri in a presidential primary, blessing economist Martín Lousteau (also part of the non-Peronist front) to try and win the City from PRO.

Yesterday, Radical (UCR) party lawmaker Julio Cobos said the non-Peronist front should revise its strategy in case Massa and Solanas sign a deal. Asked about the effect of that possible alliance, the former vice-president considered that everything pointed toward an electoral deal between UCR progressive elements and the Broad Progressive Front (FAP) which in 2011 proposed the presidential candidacy of former Santa Fe governor Hermes Binner.

Although a final decision has yet to be made by UCR leaders during the March 14 meeting of the party’s national convention, Cobos stressed that Radical leaders should make “quick definitions” about the direction of the party. “People want certainty, and they don’t want more confusion,” he told Nacional Rock.

The deadline to register electoral alliances in the City is this coming Wednesday, while the registration period for all local candidates is set to close in a few weeks.

Stocks mixed as Greek deal offsets tumbling oil

US stocks slipped from all-time highs today, pulled lower by a sharp drop in crude oil prices, while European shares rallied to fresh seven-year highs on last week’s conditional financial rescue for Greece.
Yields on low-rated euro zone government bonds fell on relief an agreement was reached late Friday as it eased concerns that Greece would leave the euro, even though it merely buys time for Athens to seek a long-term deal with Europe.
The Pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index surged to highs last seen in December 2007 and Germany’s DAX equity index set a record closing high, pushing gains so far this year to almost 14 percent.
Britain’s FTSE 100 index was the only major index in Europe to close lower, albeit slightly, after HSBC reported a 17 percent drop in annual profit. The bank’s shares fell 4.6 percent.
Oil weakened on rising inventories, which have pressured crude prices and hit US energy shares, a major component of the US benchmark S&P 500 index. The S&P 500 and the Dow industrials closed at all-time highs on Friday.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 54.34 points, or 0.3 percent, to 18,086.1. The S&P 500 slid 5.02 points, or 0.24 percent, to 2,105.28 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 5.50 points, or 0.11 percent, to 4,950.46.
MSCI’s all-country world index, a measure of stock performance in 46 countries, slipped 0.07 percent, while the FTSEurofirst 300 index rose closed up 0.65 percent at 1,535.08.
Brent crude fell $1.32 to settle at $58.90 a barrel. Benchmark US WTI crude for April delivery settled down $1.36 at $49.45.
The dollar rose against most currencies as investors await Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s testimony on Tuesday to a Senate panel for clues on when the US central bank will boost interest rates.
The euro retreated on lingering doubts over whether the Greek accord will lead to a deal to keep Athens solvent.
«The Greece debt deal has been mildly positive, but it’s difficult to determine what is the next move yet before Yellen’s testimony tomorrow,» said Lane Newman, director of foreign exchange at ING Capital Markets in New York.
The dollar index, a measure of the greenback versus currencies of major US trading partners, rose 0.32 percent to 94.555.
The euro was down 0.38 percent against the dollar at $1.1335 . The dollar dipped 0.12 percent against the yen, last trading at 118.87 yen.
US Treasuries prices rose on expectations Yellen will take a dovish tone on monetary policy and as traders viewed the latest drop in oil prices as a sign of deflation that will underpin a cautious Fed.
Benchmark 10-year notes rose 22/32 in price to yield 2.0557 percent.

How to ease Israel’s concerns over Iran

Obama could address Netanyahu fears
The controversy over Republican House Speaker John Boehner’s invitation to Benjamin Netanyahu to address a joint meeting of Congress has had the ironic effect of diverting attention from the very topic the Israeli prime minister wants to discuss: the problems with a potential deal on the Iranian nuclear program. Although everyone debates the propriety of the Israeli prime minister challenging President Barack Obama’s policy in such a setting, the partisan nature of the invitation and the timing of the speech — just two weeks before an Israeli election — the substance of the issue has been pushed aside. Why is there such a divide between the United States’ and Israel’s positions, and can they be bridged?
There is no disguising the gap between the president and prime minister. Obama is clearly prepared to accept a deal that would limit the Iranian nuclear program for perhaps the next 15 years and in a way that ensures the Iranians would be a year away from being able to produce weapons-grade uranium. Iran, however, would not be required to dismantle any nuclear facilities or infrastructure — and, after the agreement expires, would be permitted to have an industrial-size nuclear programme and be treated like any other party to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT).
In Netanyahu’s view, however, that means leaving Iran as a nuclear-threshold state. Though the prime minister’s public posture is that Iran must not be allowed any enrichment capacity and that its nuclear facilities should be dismantled, my conversations with Israelis suggest that they could, in fact, live with an agreement that permits Iran a small enrichment capability. Their view is that, in return for a rollback of sanctions, there must be a serious rollback of the Iranian nuclear program. By contrast, the deal reportedly under consideration would limit the Iranian nuclear program, not meaningfully diminish it, in return for a rollback of sanctions.
The Israelis argue that if Iran is permitted to have an industrial-size nuclear energy program, it would be able to become a nuclear weapons state at a time of its choosing. Indeed, the transparency or verification system needed to detect a so-called breakout by a small program is unlikely to work for a very large one. Olli Heinonen, a former official at the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is responsible for verification, has been outspoken on this point. Heinonen has emphasized that what might be effective for a program with 1,000 to 2,000 centrifuges will not work for one with tens of thousands of centrifuges unless new protocols are developed, access is redefined and additional inspectors are permitted.
Thus, at least in part, the Israeli fear is related to the difficulty of verifying that the Iranians are complying with the NPT once they have an industrial-size program. No doubt it is also driven by concerns about the will of the United States and other nations to prevent Iran from crossing the weapons threshold, particularly if they have accepted a deal in which Iran is permitted a large nuclear infrastructure. Could the Obama administration address those fears?
Yes, provided that the administration is prepared to take two steps.
First, it should ensure that the verification measures in the deal provide for “anywhere, anytime” access to all declared and undeclared facilities, and buttress these measures, which are in the additional protocol of the NPT, with new means to enable effective inspection of a large nuclear program. Since any deal with Iran would serve as a precedent, the United States’ five negotiating partners should support this.
Second, it should be prepared to spell out in advance the consequences for all classes of violations of the agreement. For the most egregious, indicating a dash toward weapons-grade production, the use of force should be the result. Such consequences would be far more credible if the administration worked them out with Congress and they were enshrined in legislation — and if those consequences, especially the use of force, were also applied to an Iranian move to develop nuclear weapons after the term of the agreement.
Incorporating these measures in legislation would send a clear signal and demonstrate that the president and Congress are unified on this issue. It would also serve as a deterrent to Iran and reassure the Israelis about the certainty of our action — removing a key source of their fear of the agreement.
The administration, too, should find this approach acceptable. It would not jeopardize current diplomacy, it would give the administration a way to cooperate with Congress and it would give those on the Hill an outlet for their desire to have an imprint on the deal. And it would be consistent with the core of the administration’s argument: the agreement would limit the Iranian programme and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons — and we would be able to deter the Iranians even after the 15-year period of the deal. It just might also bridge the gap between Obama and Netanyahu.

A. Fernández slams Pollicita for not attending Congress hearing

Secretary General to the Presidency Aníbal Fernández condemned prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita’s decision to decline an invitation to brief Congress on AMIA cover-up complaint filed by late Alberto Nisman, saying the reasons he gave not to attend were “unfounded.”
“Lawmakers have the right to know about certain issues which he could appropriately explain (if he attended the hearing),” Fernández said.
Pollicita declined last Friday an invitation by the ruling Victory Front (FpV) party bloc in Congress to attend a hearing scheduled for today to provide further details on the report filed by late AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman, accusing President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and top government officials of covering up Iran’s alleged involvement in the 1994 attack against the Jewish community center.
In a writ addressed to the Lower House chairman Julián Domínguez, the judicial official rejected the invitation considering the intention of MPs “can not prevail over the final purpose that the investigation must have.”
“When the opposition called Alberto Nisman (to brief the Congress on the content of his complaint) everything was great, correct, and when the ruling party calls him (Pollicita, the prosecutor who continues with late Nisman’s file) he says the reasons are not enough,” Fernández complained.

‘Opposition candidates seek to become managers of corporate interests’

Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich renewed his criticism against “certain sectors within the Judiciary,” accusing the opposition of “seeking to become managers of corporate interests.”
“Those in the opposition were responsible for the highest poverty (rates), indebtedness and the destruction of the productive matrix,” Capitanich stated in his daily press briefing at the government house. “The contrary has happened during this administration.”
“Certain groups within the Judiciary express as factious groups with corporate interests, determined to encourage destabilizing attitudes,” he added. The official said that ahead of the presidential elections, the country faces “a contradiction: democracy vs. corporations.”

Power chamber explosion kills one worker, injures two in BA City downtown

A 38-year-old worker has lost his life when a power chamber exploded leaving also two injured in Buenos Aires City downtown, head of the SAME emergency system Alberto Crescenti confirmed.
The incident took place today at around 1.30 pm today. The victim was in working on the repair of the chamber and the maintenance of medium-voltage power lines when the explosion was registered.
Mewanwhile, two other operators also working in the site resulted injured. One of them is 23 year olds and the other one is 30 years old.
They were both assisted by the SAME and transferred to the Argerich Hospital for further treatment. Crescenti has informed the injured were “out of danger.”

Blue dollar jumps 9 cents to 13.11 pesos

The so called “blue” dollar closed at 13.01 pesos after climbing nine cents in the first trading session of the week, with the gap between the informal and the official rates of the American currency breaking the barrier of 50 percent.
The blue-chip swap rate was falling nine cents to 11.87 pesos while the stock exchange rate was 12 cents down at 11.98 pesos.
Meanwhile, the US dollar jumped half a cent to 8.67 pesos for buyers and 8.72 for sellers in Buenos Aries City banks and foreign exchange offices.

New AMIA Unit to investigate Syrian lead

Prosecutor Sabrina Samer says new information began to arrive in the last few weeks.

Prosecutor Sabrina Namer, one of the members of the board of public attorneys set to replace late prosecutor Alberto Nisman in the investigation of the AMIA attack, yesterday said his team will evaluate “why the Syrian line was abandoned.”
The new team appointed by Attorney General Alejandra Gils Carbó to investigate the 1994 bombing of the Jewish community centre will continue the work done so far, analyzing the information that has been collected over the past years, Namer said.
However, the member of the Attorney General’s Unit for the Investigation into the AMIA Case (UFI AMIA) warned that “after ten years of work by the UFI, the course (of the investigation) cannot be changed overnight without information.”
“The stance adopted by those who have no expectations (about the results of the case) makes sense,” the prosecutor told Nacional Rock.
“After 20 years, lots of things are lost.”
In that regard, she made it clear that there was no certainty that justice would prevail.
“I cannot guarantee that now, with us (in the team), the truth will come out. But we’re committed to do our best,” she said.
New Leads
Namer, best known as the prosecutor who accused former president Fernando de la Rúa of alleged bribes paid in the Senate to pass a labour reform during his presidency, said new clues had begun to arrive at UFI AMIA.
“Since they learned that there is a new team, a lot of people started sending emails with information for us to investigate different things. We have to analyze if it brings something new with a fresh perspective to revise (the case), to continue or deepen on some of the things in the file, now with our perspective,” said the prosecutor.
As for the investigation itself, which was dominated by the accusation against Iranian officials, sponsored by Nisman, the newly-appointed prosecutor said maybe it was time to explore other options.
“We’ll see why the so-called Syria line was dismissed and if there’s an explanation for that,” Namer said. “We need to see the scope of that line (of investigation)… and know why it was left aside.”
As the Herald reported earlier this month, Veteran spymaster Antonio “Jaime” Stiusso, who used to work hand-in-hand with Nisman, was one of the main promoters of the so-called Iranian line of investigation, not paying attention to the Syrian clues or the local connection.
“We have to see what is at a standstill or a dead-end and what lines of the investigations can be abandoned,” she said. “I’m in no position to pass a judgment over what Nisman did or didn’t do.”
The team
Namer will be joined by three other prosecutors.
One of them, Roberto Salum, used to be in charge of criminal investigations in Reconquista, Santa Fe province, where he investigated crimes committed during the last dictatorship against 40 prisoners at the Air Base clandestine detention centre.
Another is Patricio Sabadini, a 33-year-old prosecutor who was part of the Unit for Human Rights Cases in Resistencia, Chaco.
Juan Patricio Murray will be in charge of coordinating the group. In 2012, he was sent to Rosario to conduct drug-trafficking probes. There he charged Santa Fe provincial police chief Hugo Tognoli with covering up drug-trafficking gangs.
As the Herald reported earlier this month, Gils Carbó wants them to divide their tasks: some of them will be in charge of appearing before the courts and others will have to devote their time to investigating the AMIA attack and the cover-up of the bombing.

Gov’t says Mujica’s criticism is ‘unfair’

Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich responded to Uruguay’s President José “Pepe” Mujica, who accused Argentina of “forgetting about integration” when things go right for the country, saying the statement was “unfair” given Argentina’s role in the “foundation” of regional integration.
“We are very respectful of the statements of the world’s presidents, but it would be unfair if the role that Argentina and presidents Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner have had in the growth of regional blocs with our brotherly countries went unrecognized,” Capitanich said to reporters at the government house.
Mujica has urged Argentina to “accompany” Latin American integration, accusing the government of doing exactly the opposite. “When things go right for it, Argentina does not give a damn (sic) about integration,” he said.

Renewal Front leader takes aim at PRO leader for opposing takeover of pension funds

Renewal Front leader Sergio Massa appeared to adopt a new strategy to woo the electorate yesterday, taking aim at PRO party presidential hopeful Mauricio Macri, a key contender in line to succeed President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
In a surprise move, Massa charged Macri with being “a neo-con,” an accusation often made by Kirchnerite leaders, during a televised lunch with TV host Mirtha Legrand.
“The PRO party means neo-conservatism,” Massa insisted, warning that the Buenos Aires City mayor “wants the return of the AFJP (private pension funds), which is very serious.”
Massa was Fernández de Kirchner’s Cabinet chief when the head of state announced a bill, promptly passed by Congress, which resulted in the takeover of private pension funds. PRO lawmakers voted against the measure.
The former Tigre leader, who was joined by his wife Malena Galmarini, also tried to influence the Victory Front (FpV) primary by saying Buenos Aires province Governor Scioli and Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo “were almost tied” in voter preferences among those expected to vote for Kirchnerite leaders in the August open primaries.
New strategy
This new strategy by Massa makes sense if other recent factors are taken into account.
Earlier yesterday, Clarín newspaper published a poll by the Management & Fit consultancy company which stated that Macri was leading the presidencial race, with 27.9 percent of preferences nationwide. Scioli (23.6 percent) and Massa (18.8 percent) appeared to be further away from the presidential race.
Management & Fit is led by Mar del Plata economist Mariel Fornoni and usually produces polls later published by Clarín, who has been at odds with the CFK administration since 2008.
Yesterday, the daily also published the results of a poll conducted earlier this month by Poliarquía, which also put the PRO party leader at the front. The survey said the centre-right City mayor is already receiving 28 percent of the voters’ preferences, ahead of Scioli (26 percent) and Massa (24 percent).
While Poliarquía is generaly seen as a serious consultancy firm, having the most successful predictions when it comes to elections, results of the surveys conducted by the company led by political analyst Fabián Perechodnik do not hide its centre-right sympathies.
Moreover, the high number of undecided voters makes it impossible to make solid predictions and still suggest a triple tie between Macri, Scioli and Massa.
Against Macri
But Massa seems inclined to believe Macri is his main rival, as they both share an important portion of the opposition electorate.
Yesterday, he criticized the role played by businessman Nicolás Caputo, a close friend of Macri and a major decision-maker inside PRO.
Until last December, Civic Coalition (CC) presidential hopeful Elisa Carrió had been denouncing the PRO chief, but complaints have now ceased, stressed Massa, who wandered about denounces about “Caputo, corruption and gambling” in Buenos Aires.
The former Tigre leader suggested the Carrió-Macri deal, under which both leaders agreed to run against each other in the open primaries, was the reason behind that.
But there is another reason behind his new change of tactic: despite a series of local electoral deals, Macri remains Massa’s main competitor in most districts.
The race against the clock to seal provincial alliances for this year’s election can be explained by the deficits both parties have outside their usually strong territories. Massa is finding trouble expanding his success in Buenos Aires province (where he beat Kirchnerite candidate Martín Insaurralde in the 2013 midterm elections) and Macri has been struggling for years to achieve major victories beyond the General Paz avenue.
With this in mind, both the PRO and the Renewal Front have been trying to “grab” leaders of the ill-fated Broad Front-UNEN, who is coming to pieces only months away before the general elections.
The first major move was made by Massa, who in November signed an accord with Tucumán province’s Radical (UCR) party gubernatorial candidate José Cano. Hours later, PRO Senator Gabriela Michetti shared a similar photo-op with Carrió in BA City — which anticipated the deal between the PRO chief and the firebrand CC lawmaker.
But while the Renewal Front closed deals with frontrunner Radical gubernatorial candidates in Jujuy and Tucumán, Macri shifted his attention to Córdoba and the Cuyo (central-western) region, making strategic partnerships before Massa has a chance.
In Cordóba, Macri is said to almost have an agreement sealed with UCR leaders. He also enjoys the backing of Civic Front Senator Luis Juez, a progressive leader who is doing poorly at the polls. In Chaco province, PRO is in talks with the Radical mayor of Resistencia, Aída Ayala, but talks are also ongoing with Corrientes Governor Ricardo Colombi.
In Neuquén’s capital city, the UCR mayor Horacio “Pechi” Quiroga was joined by Renewal Front lawmakers Felipe Solá and Joaquín de la Torre in his official gubernatorial campaign launch — but sources close to Massa acknowledged that Quiroga was still considering siding with Macri.
Last week, Michetti arrived in Mendoza to announce a deal with Radical leader Alfredo Cornejo, mayor of Godoy Cruz and a key Mendoza gubernatorial hopeful. The PRO senator was joined by UCR Chairman Ernesto Sanz, a conservative Mendoza senator who has been calling for a broader anti-Kirchnerite deal.
But Massa also clinched a deal with Cornejo. Last Thursday, the Renewal Front leader announced he had also reached an accord with the UCR leader, vowing not to present a Mendoza ticket of his own to compete against Cornejo.

Greece misses deadline, will send reform list tomorrow

Greece will submit a list of reforms to the Eurogroup of euro zone finance ministers on Tuesday morning, a Greek government official said today.
The Eurogroup had set a Monday deadline for Athens to supply the list, which is a condition for securing a four-month extension to the country’s bailout programme. The official said the Eurogroup had agreed that the submission could be made on Tuesday.
The official outlined what the list would contain, but gave no reason for the delay.
«The list of reforms will be sent to the finance ministers of the Eurogroup on Tuesday morning, while a teleconference will take place in the afternoon,» the official said.
The list would include measures to tackle Greece’s «humanitarian crisis,» regulate tax arrears and bad loans, and end the foreclosure of homes, the official said. It will also include structural reforms to tackle tax evasion and corruption, fight fuel smuggling, restructure the public sector and cut red tape.

HSBC confirms CEO Stuart Gulliver holds Swiss account

Europe’s biggest bank, HSBC said its chief executive, Stuart Gulliver, holds a bank account in Switzerland that was set up in 1998 to hold bonus payments, responding to a report in the Guardian newspaper that said he had a Swiss account that contained $7.6 million in 2007.

A spokeswoman for the bank gave details of the account and of other issues related to Gulliver’s tax status, following the Guardian story.
The spokeswoman said Gulliver set up the account when he was living and working in Hong Kong to hold bonus payments. Full tax was paid in Hong Kong on the bonus payments and Gulliver has voluntarily declared his Swiss account to UK tax authorities for a number of years, the spokeswoman said.
She said the account was set up in 1998 in the name of a Panamanian company for reasons of confidentiality «and this had no other purpose and provided no tax or other advantage.» She did not say how much the account contained.
There was no suggestion in the Guardian report that Gulliver broke any rules.
HSBC is under scrutiny after allegations that its private Swiss bank helped clients dodge taxes. Gulliver has admitted failings in HSBC’s Swiss arm in the period up to 2007 and apologised to investors and customers, but said the business has been transformed and standards are now up to scratch.
HSBC’s chairman Douglas Flint is due to appear before British lawmakers on Wednesday to answer questions about the bank’s alleged complicity in tax evasion.

HSBC reported a deeper-than-expected 17 percent slide in annual pretax profit and cut its earnings target, saying allegations its Swiss business had helped customers to dodge taxes had brought shame on the bank.

Once train crash victims remembered on third anniversary of tragedy

Three years have passed since a train crash at Once terminal station killed 51 people and injured more than 700. This morning, families and friends of the victims remembered them at the same place where that tragic event took place and renewed their call for justice.

Throughout the day, several events were held to honour the victims. One of the ceremonies took place early in the morning at the so called «Memorial de los Corazones» (Heart Memorial) where a plate signed by Pope Francis was unveiled.

A mass was held around noon at the Metropolitan Cathedral and a rally was organized by human rights organisations and groups of victims’ families atr 7 pm in Plaza de Mayo square.

Unas 250 viviendas deberán ser reconstruidas tras el temporal

El número surge de un relevamiento de las autoridades cordobesas entre las 1.700 casas dañadas por las lluvias que afectaron la semana pasada a varias localidades cordobesas. Además, muchas viviendas deberán ser relocalizadas.

Las autoridades cordobesas informaron hoy que deberán ser reconstruidas aproximadamente 250 de las 1.700 viviendas dañadas por el temporal que la semana pasada afectó a varias localidades en Córdoba y en el que murieron ocho personas.

El ministro provincial de Desarrollo Social, Daniel Passerini, aseguró que ya fue relevada la situación de «1.700 viviendas afectadas», y agregó que «muchas de ellas, entre un 12 por ciento y un 15 por ciento de las relevadas, deberán ser reconstruidas».

No obstante, de acuerdo con el informe brindado por el funcionario, «muchas de las viviendas deberán ser relocalizadas, porque no se permitirá la reconstrucción en zonas inundables» o próximas a ríos y arroyos que pueden crecer tras un temporal.

«Con los intendentes (de las localidades afectadas en la zona de las Sierras Chicas) estamos procurando conseguir terrenos aptos, que reúnan las condiciones de seguridad para la planificación de las nuevas viviendas», precisó Passerini.

Por su parte, el gobernador José Manuel de la Sota precisó en su cuenta de Twitter que «unas 250 viviendas deberán ser reconstruidas».

Daniel Passerini, ministro provincial de Desarrollo Social «A siete días del temporal, el 98% de los afectados tiene luz y el 90% ya dispone de agua. Se habilitaron 5 puentes y estamos reconstruyendo 12 vados», afirmó.

En el mismo sentido, Passerini precisó que, en materia de elementos de primera necesidad, hasta el momento, han sido entregados «4.850 colchones con sus respectivas frazadas, e igual cantidad de módulos alimentarios», además de «80.000 litros de agua mineral envasada para el consumo».

«Asimismo, ya hemos comenzado con la primera etapa de entrega de bienes muebles y de electrodomésticos para sustituir a los dañados por el agua. Esto ya lo hicimos con los damnificados de las localidades de Agua de Oro, El Manzano, Salispuees, La Granja y Villa Allende», enfatizó el funcionario.

Desde el Gobierno local también informaron que la Empresa Provincial de Energía de Córdoba (EPEC) dispuso que para los damnificados por el temporal, «entre 1.700 y 2.000 usuarios», los vencimientos para el pago de dicho servicio, correspondientes a «marzo, pasan a octubre y los de abril, a noviembre».

Asimismo, sin dar mayores precisiones, De la Sota dijo que el ministro de Agua, Ambiente y Servicios Públicos, Fabián López, elevó «un informe a la Nación en el que se detallan los daños sufridos por las viviendas y la infraestructura en las Sierras Chicas».

Si bien en los últimos cinco días, dadas las buenas condiciones climáticas, las autoridades provinciales y municipales aprovecharon para avanzar con las tareas de asistencia y de reconstrucción en las localidades afectadas, el director de Defensa Civil, Diego Concha, advirtió sobre la posibilidad de «fuertes precipitaciones» para mañana, martes.

Como consecuencia, desde ese organismo pidieron a la población de las localidades serranas y a los turistas a que «no se acerquen a ríos y arroyos».

Por otra parte, personal del PAMI realiza un operativo para brindar atención médica y relevar las necesidades más urgentes de sus afiliados damnificados por el temporal, razón por la cual equipos multidisciplinarios, integrados por profesionales médicos, trabajadores sociales y personal administrativo, recorren desde el jueves pasado las localidades de Río Ceballos, Mendiolaza, Unquillo, Villa Allende y Agua de Oro.

El temporal se desató hace una semana cuando, en la zona de las Sierras Chicas, por la intensidad de las lluvias, cayeron cerca de 300 milímetros en pocas horas, lo que generó la crecida de ríos y arroyos, que arrasaron personas, casas, puentes y caminos.

A raíz del temporal murieron ocho personas, la última de las cuales, Mariana di Marco (21 años), fue encontrada sin vida el viernes pasado, a unos cinco kilómetros desde el lugar donde el domingo pasado había desaparecido, arrasada por las aguas del río Ascochinga, cuando acampaba con otros tres jóvenes de un grupo de boy scouts en el paraje La Pampa, a 60 kilómetros de la capital cordobesa.

Emitirán una nueva serie de billetes de 50 pesos con motivo de las Malvinas

Se pondrán en circulación en marzo y coexistirán con los actualmente vigentes. Homenajea a la defensa de la soberanía nacional sobre las Islas, Georgias del Sur, Sandwich del Sur y los espacios marítimos circundantes.

El Banco Central (BCRA) pondrá en circulación en marzo una nueva serie de billetes de curso legal de 50 pesos en homenaje a la defensa de la soberanía nacional sobre las Islas Malvinas, Georgias del Sur, Sandwich del Sur y los espacios marítimos circundantes.

La nueva serie, dijo a Télam una fuente del ente monetario, que lleva el nombre de “Islas Malvinas. Un amor soberano”, se inicia con el número 00.000.001 A y será distribuida a través de las entidades financieras y las redes de cajeros automáticos mediante los mecanismos habituales.

Los nuevos billetes coexistirán en su uso con los actualmente vigentes de esa denominación.

El presidente del BCRA, Alejandro Vanoli, señaló que “el objetivo de este billete es incorporar en un elemento de uso diario y soberano por naturaleza como es la moneda, el reclamo inclaudicable del pueblo argentino sobre las Islas Malvinas”.
El billete, diseñado y producido en su totalidad por la Casa de la Moneda, presenta en su anverso como imagen central el mapa del archipiélago.

Junto a él, un segundo mapa de Latinoamérica y el Caribe alude al apoyo recibido en ámbitos diplomáticos por parte de los países vecinos, que han transformado el reclamo por Malvinas en una causa regional. También posee imágenes del albatros, ave que anida en Malvinas y recorre la Argentina continental, y del sargazo gigante, una de las especies de la flora marítima austral.

A su vez, en el reverso del billete se encuentra la imagen del Gaucho Antonio Rivero, quien en 1833 encabezó la resistencia a la usurpación británica de las islas. Entre otras ilustraciones, se agregan la gaviota malvinense, que refiere la convicción de recuperar pacíficamente la soberanía sobre las islas, así como imágenes del Cementerio de Darwin y del Crucero General Belgrano, en reconocimiento a los combatientes caídos en la guerra del Atlántico Sur.

La paleta de colores elegida, en tonos azules y celestes, evoca los del pabellón nacional. Asimismo, en ambas caras del billete, un faro simboliza la guía hacia el camino de recuperación pacífica de las islas.

En materia de seguridad, el billete combina medidas fácilmente detectables por el público con tecnologías de vanguardia en documentos para la verificación de autoridades bancarias y forenses. Entre las primeras, se destacan el hilo de seguridad de 5 milímetros, la marca de agua con una cartografía de las islas y las iniciales IM visibles en transparencia y el uso de tinta magnética ópticamente variable en el Sol de Mayo, cuyo color cambia de dorado a verde al inclinarse el billete.

Otro rasgo saliente es que posee elementos que facilitarán su uso por parte de personas con capacidades visuales reducidas. Además de los dos rombos presentes en el billete actual de 50 pesos, se añaden cuatro grupos de 5 líneas perceptibles al tacto en ambos extremos del anverso.

¿Cómo ha evolucionado la esperanza de vida a lo largo de la historia?

La longevidad media de los primeros humanos no superaba los 30 años de edad, desde el australopitecos que habitó África hace más de 4,4 millones de años hasta la del Homo sapiens europeo de hace 50.000 ó 10.000 años no ha variado significativamente, es más la esperanza de vida hasta los últimos 150 años no superaba los 35 años de edad.

Esta cifra ha sido también observada en el Imperio Romano, si bien había personas que superaban con creces la media de la población, de hecho se sabe que en la época de Vespasiano se hablaba de personas centenarias e incluso alguno de los cuales tenían más de 130 años de edad. Más de 1.000 años después, en la Edad Media, no se observaron incrementos significativos en la esperanza de vida, así los hombres vivían de promedio 44 años y las mujeres 33,7 años.

Hubo que esperar al siglo XX para que se produjeran incrementos continuos de la esperanza de vida al nacer, las causas de dicho incremento son variadas, pero fundamentalmente se deben a las mejoras en la salubridad e higiene, las vacunas y los antibióticos.
El dato medio mundial de esperanza de vida en 1955 era de 45 años, ascendiendo a 68 años en 2010, este incremento no ha tenido precedentes históricos, pero desafortunadamente sigue sin ser homogéneo aunque si es cierto que se aprecia una concentración entre los diferentes países.

Los registros de longevidad en el año 2012 de esperanza de vida al nacer, vuelven a situar a Japón en el primer lugar de los países más longevos del mundo y así una niña nacida hoy en este país alcanzará los 86,41 años de edad. En el caso de los hombres japoneses su esperanza de vida al nacer ha alcanzado 79,94 años de edad, ocupando el quinto lugar en el puesto de países más longevos, ranking encabezado en este caso por Islandia con 80,8 años seguido de Hong Kong, Suiza e Israel.

Una niña es objeto de un ataque suicida

Nigeria sufre atentados en puertas de las elecciones de marzo.
Al menos siete personas murieron en un mercado en el norte de Nigeria tras estallar una carga explosiva que llevaba oculta en su cuerpo una niña de unos siete años, en un nuevo ataque con el sello del grupo extremista Boko Haram.

El ataque en la localidad nigeriana de Potiskum, la capital comercial del estado de Yobem, es el último en una ola de atentados con niños.

Macri celebró el triunfo radical en Mendoza

El líder del PRO sigue en su gira mendocina para fortificar la alianza local con la UCR y felicitó al intendente de la capital mendocina, Rodolfo Suárez, por la victoria que logró en las elecciones primarias abiertas.
«La gente sabe que no se pueden dar más cheques en blanco y que hay que apoyar a aquellos diirigentes que pueden demostrar, con equipos y gestión, lo que han hecho. Ya no hay más lugar para discursos lindos que después no se sostienen en el tiempo», afirmó Macri que celebró «este cambio en Mendoza».

Además, ratificó que colabroan en la campaña de Cornejo mediante el referente local de PRO, Gustavo Senetiner: «Nuestros equipos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires están trabajando para intercambiar e impulsar planes conjuntos». Suárez agradeció el apoyo al igual que al candidato a gobernador provincial, Alfredo Cornejo.
El candidato provincial radical retribuyó el agradecimiento: «Macri liderará una propuesta de cambio para toda la Argentina».

Encontraron muerto al joven desaparecido en los bosques de Palermo

Lucio Correa, de 17 años, perdió la vida en un accidente de tránsito, ocurrido el sábado a la mañana, sobre la avenida Lugones. Lo reconoció la familia por un tatuaje en la espalda.

El peor final. Lucio Correa falleció el sábado a la mañana, tras asistir a la fiesta electrónica en la zona de los bosques de Palermo. Tras ser buscado de forma incesante por sus padres, amigos y familiares, el joven fue encontrado muerto, en la morgue judicial.

El reconocimiento del cuerpo de Lucio lo hizo uno de sus cuñados, quien pudo identificarlo por un enorme tatuaje que el chico tenía en su espalda, informó C5N.
El cadáver había llegado hasta ahí el sábado, luego de ser embestido por un camión en la intersección de las avenidas Dorrego y Lugones, cuando, según se informó ese día, la víctima -hasta ese momento no identificada- intentaba cruzar hacia las vías del Ferrocarril General Belgrano y fue embestida por un camión de gran porte y luego arrastrado por otros vehículos que pasaban.

Durante la madrugada del sábado, Lucio había sido visto por última vez en una fiesta de música electrónica celebrada en los bosques de Palermo, en la intersección de Figueroa Alcorta y Dorrego, cerca del Planetario, donde se encontraba con sus amigos.

Al momento de su desaparición, Lucio vestía chaleco azul, bermudas a cuadros y zapatillas deportivas. Tras no poder contactarse, la familia efectuó la denuncia y lo buscó intensamente durante dos días.

Denunciaron al ex espía Stiuso por lavado de dinero

La oficina que investiga este tipo de delitos inició una causa contra el ex jefe de Contrainteligencia, desplazado tras la asunción de Parrilli en la SI.

La Procuraduría General de Criminalidad Económica y Lavado de Activos(Procelac) denunció hoy al ex agente de inteligencia Antonio “Jaime” Stiuso por el presunto delito de lavado de dinero, en el juzgado federal a cargo de Sebastián Casanello.

Casanello ya tiene en trámite una denuncia contra Stiuso por supuesto enriquecimiento ilícito, lavado de activos y tráfico de influencias, presentada por el legislador porteño Gustavo Vera, a la cual se sumó ahora la acción penal que promovió la fiscalía dependiente del Ministerio Público Fiscal de la Nación.

Vera había sostenido que Stiuso, junto a quienes sindicó como sus “socios” e incluyó en la denuncia, tiene empresas cuya actividad económica excede lo que estimó son sus ingresos.

Nadal, de 28 años y considerado como el mejor de la historia sobre polvo de ladrillo, tomó contacto con la prensa argentina en el Hotel Sheraton, en el barrio porteño de Retiro, y analizó diversos aspectos de su actualidad, incluída su participación en el ATP porteño.

El español debería haber venido el año pasado pero no pudo hacerlo debido a una lesión que sufrió en la espalda en la final del Abierto de Australia que perdió con el suizo Stanislas Wawrinka, dolencia que lo tuvo a maltaer, y luego sufrió otra que lo mantuvo inactivo, en la muñeca izquierda, durante el abierto de Wimbledon.

«Tuve un 2013 fantástico (ganó Roland Garros y el US Open) y un 2014 muy complicado por las lesiones que me quitaron continuidad. A partir de ahora quiero volver y todos los torneos son importantes para mi, sobre todo cuando venís de un tiempo de no ganar seguido, de no estar en las finales», analizó el tenista, quien conquistó 64 títulos en su carrera.

Nadal perdió el sábado pasado con el italiano Fabio Fognini en las semifinales del ATPO 500 de Río de Janeiro, en un partido que ganaba cómodo por 6-1 y 2-1 con quiebre a favor, pero que terminó perdiendo por 1-6, 6-2 y 7-5, y que le impidió estar en la final que ganó su compatriota David Ferrer.

«Estoy bien pero no aún al ciento por ciento, en Río hice una buena semana pero no debería haber perdido con Fognini. Sentí calambres, algo que no me había sucedido nunca en mi carrera y me afectó la humedad. No pude resolver un partido que tenía controlado», recordó el español, ahora número cuatro del ranking mundial.

Nadal se mostró humilde y bien predispuesto al diálogo, cómodo en la Argentina, y en especial en Buenos Aires, una ciudad que lo trató bien cuando vino a jugar en 2005 el ATP y también en 2013 cuando participó de la exhibición de despedida del cordobés David Nalbandian, junto a otro grande como el serbio Novak Djokovic.

En su primera aparición en Buenos Aires, Nadal tenía 18 años, era el número 48 del planeta y se dio el gusto de pasar dos rondas antes de caer en cuartos de final ante el ‘Gato’ Gastón Gaudio, luego campeón.

En esa ocasión, el mallorquín superó en la ronda inicial al cordobés Agustín Calleri, en octavos de final al italiano Potito Starace y luego cayó ante Gaudio por 0-6, 6-0 y 6-1, en un court central del Buenos Aires que lució repleto.

«Con Gaudio fue un partido extraño, con un resultado raro. En ese momento Gastón era el campeón vigente de Roland Garros y uno de los rivales más complicados de enfrentar sobre polvo de ladrillo, no encontré la forma de ponerlo en apuros, y recuerdo que había un ambiente fantástico en el estadio», añoró el ex número uno del mundo.

Nadal no ocultó su felicidad por su presencia en Argentina y en el ATP porteño, en el que se confirmó que debutará mañana por la noche en dobles junto a su amigo Juan ‘Pico’ Mónaco, y el miércoles en singles frente al ganador del cruce entre su compatriota Albert Montañes y un tenista surgido de la clasificación.

«En Argentina me siento como en casa, me apetece venir aquí. Tengo mucha conexión con el público, el idioma nos acerca», afirmó el mallorquín, quien construyó una magnífica carrera y lideró el tenis masculino en distintos períodos de 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 y 2014.

«‘Pico’ Mónaco es uno de los grandes amigos que me dio el tenis, este año ganamos el dobles en Doha y tenemos la ilusión de pasarla bien juntos y llegar lejos, aunque nos tocaron rivales muy complicados en el debut», adelantó Nadal, en alusión a los checos Frantisek Cermak y Jiri Vesely, adversarios de la ronda inicial.

Nadal podría haber optado por jugar en otra parte del mundo y no en Buenos Aires, ya que en simultáneo se disputa el ATP de Dubai, con tenistas como Djokovic, el suizo Roger Federer y el escocés Andy Murray, con una bolsa de 2.082.605 dólares, cuatro veces mayor de lo que ofrece el torneo argentino.

«Jugar en lugares donde se entiende de tenis es una motivación especial y en Argentina se ama el tenis. Es un honor para mí jugar acá y tenía un compromiso moral por no haber podido venir el año pasado», concluyó el notable campeón español, la máxima atracción del torneo que se desarrolla en el barrio porteño de Palermo.

La panelista de Desayuno Americano, Jimena Cyrulnik, habló de su fanatismo por la saga de libros que llegó a la pantalla grande

Mientras hablaban de los premios Oscar, en Desayuno Americano se filtró entre los temas que tocaban la película 50 Sombras de Grey. Aunque no participó de la entrega porque recién se estrenó, el filme está en boca de todos.

La panelista Jimena Cyrulnik reveló que es fanática de la saga de libros que ya llegó a la pantalla grande: «Soy una de las tantas que cayó en este Best Seller mundial».

Tanto le gustó el libro que la panelista tiene un sueño: le gustaría ponerse en la piel de Anastasia Steele, la protagonista de la historia. «Haría gratis la película», aseguró frente a cámara.

«No la vi, pero no la quiero ver porque leí los libros y me quedó la vara muy arriba», agregó para justificarse de no haber visto el filme que se estrenó hace más de 10 días.

En estos momentos, Inglaterra está conmocionada por los rumores que indican que la actriz Emma Watson estaría manteniendo un romance secreto con –nada más y nada menos- el príncipe Harry de Inglaterra.

La historia de amor entre la actriz que participó en todas las ocho películas de Harry Potter y el hombre más codiciado de toda Gran Bretaña habría comenzado gracias al aporte del príncipe William, quien se encargó de presentarlos, según informó el medio australiano Woman’s Day.

Los rumores no tardaron en llegar a los oídos de la bella Watson, que se encargó de desmentirlos: “MUNDO… ¿recuerdan esa charla que tuvimos de no creer todo lo que escriben los medios”, escribió en su cuenta de Twitter.
