All six subway line services and the Premetro tram were resumed this morning following a three-hour strike that caused traffic inconveniences and delays across the city.
Workers ask for a wage hike and accuse Metrovias Company of not complying with their demands as they threatened to continue with the strikes.
Néstor Segovia – subway and tram workers union (AGSTYP) leader – said the strike will continue until Metrovias human resources agree to respond to the workers’ demands.
“If the situation remains the same, the workers will keep their arms crossed,” Segovia warned. “We are serious workers. They should listen to us and we are really sorry for the passengers affected,” he said.
Segovia also threatened Metrolineas with a “stream of conflicts” if the workers demands are not met. “The ones behind this are the human resources people of Metrolineas. They are the ones who won’t negotiate,” he complained.
Despite of Labour Ministry issued a mandatory conciliation decision, workers decided to go on a strike after an agreement with Metrovías and the City government failed to be reached last night. From 5 am to 8am, the morning busiest hours, the City’s main Subway lines remained shut affecting thousands of passengers.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, as a protest, ticket barriers were open at the head subway allowing passengers to travel for free from 7 am to 10 am.
