Zaffaroni confident subway conflict will be resolved by Supreme Court

As the chances for finding a political solution to the subway management conflict diminish, Justice Eugenio Zaffaroni assured that the matter is likely to be resolved at the Supreme Court.

“Such a conflict between the City and the National Government is a matter that must be resolved by the Supreme Court,” he said, although he declined to comment on the matter because he feels the conflict will only end after a court ruling..

“I think it’s convenient for politicians to understand that negotiation is the essence of politics. When a conflict is removed from the political arena, the solution is not always satisfactory,” he warned.

The conflict over the transfer of the subway and buses management got bogged down after Mayor Mauricio Macri refused to take over the subway system two weeks ago.

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner sent to Congress a draft bill hoping the transfer will be voted into law. However, the Macri administration assured that even if Congress passes said bill, its validity would have to be debated in the City Legislature floor.

Last Thursday, UDESO lawmaker Graciela Ocaña and City Lawmaker Daniel Amoroso formally requested in court that the matter is “urgently resolved” by the Argentine Supreme Court.
