‘We don’t want to buy less from Brazil, but to sell them more,’ UIA’s De Mendiguren

The head of the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA in Spanish) José Ignacio de Mendiguren once again showed his concerns about trade deficits that Argentina has with its main Mercosur partner, Brazil. The lobbyist told reporters the intention of local entrepreneurs is to increase sales with the neighbouring country.
“Argentina has been on a trade deficit with Brazil for more than 80 months. It definitely represents a chronic shortage where the industrial sector has a deficit of 8 billion dollars just for the last year. So, it is not that we want to buy less from Brazil, what we want is to increase our sales with them.”
Last week a group o fUIA’s representatives led by De Mendiguren met with Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega and Development Minister Fernando Pimentel, with whom they discussed the barriers to imports.
“We are seeking for a long-term strategic vision, and that’s what we are working on right now,” De Mendiguren told reporters of El Mundo AM radio, and added that in Brazil he proposed that the private sectors of both countries get together in order to avoid any discrepancies and be able to define strategies to follow for the future.
