The Beef Industry Personnel Union set up a roadblock for an undetermined period of time in front of the Liniers Market. Union members, led by Alberto Fantini, are not letting cattle trucks enter the market, located in the Mataderos neighbourhood.
According to the unionists, the protest was sparked by “the uncertainty that many workers in the meatpacking sector are experiencing toward their jobs” and the 500 hundred employees who were recently fired by the JBS Swift meatpacking plant in Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe.
“People are very upset because no one is listening to our claims,” they explained.
As the meat industry tries to find a way out of a crisis, the measure, which started on Sunday afternoon, will continue for an undetermined period of time.
Fantini explained that “they want the National and provincial governments to listen to their claims in order to avoid repeating what happened from 2009 up until now, where 8,000 workers have been fired from their jobs.”
“After almost three months, there’s just no more room for dialogue or mediation,” he said.
