Legendary racer Juan María Traverso attended the funeral of 22-year old Guido Falaschi, who was killed on Sunday during a Turismo Carretera race, and blamed many of the parts involved in the organization of the event for his death.
“I’m very upset because this wasn’t an accident. This is a serious flaw in all of the event’s security systems,” he assured.
Clearly distraught by what he called “a tragedy that could have been avoided,” Traverso blamed the authorities in charge of “clearing the track for the race,” and stressed that “the reason why this doesn’t happen more often is because of pure chance.”
He then blasted the Turismo Carretera Racers Association (ACTC) for the medical treatment Falaschi received after the violent crash.
“I was embarrassed when I saw the ACTC’s medic. He had to put him on a gurney and into a van. The health insurance coverage that racers pay for is too high for the organization to treat them like that,” he assured. “The racing business is not looking after the racers,” he said angrily.
When asked about what he thought at the moment of the accident, he highlighted that the yellow flags, which force racers to slow down, were not being waved.
“The racer who ran into him (Néstor Girolani) was ten seconds behind Falaschi. Had he seen the waving flags he would have had enough time to slow down,” he concluded.
