Argentina’s minimum wage ‘is the most important one in Latin America,’ CFK

After attending a ceremony in which a train service connecting Argentina and Uruguay was reactivated after a 30-year hiatus, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner defended Argentina’s minimum wage, assuring “it is the most important one in Latinamerica and has the highest purchasing power” in the continent.

Last week the Minimun Wage Council, conformed by the country’s main union and business leaders and Government officials agreed on a 25 percent hike on the minimum wage, which now stands at $2300.

Before the meeting, union leaders had demanded a 41 percent hike while businessmen only offered a 18 percent increase.

It was only after a tough round of negotiations that both sides finally agreed on the 25 percent hike.
