The Bank Workers’ Association has announced a 48-hour strike for May 26 and 27, in protest at the continued lack of progress in collective salary negotiations in the sector.
With banks also closed on May 25 for the national holiday, the industrial action means that client services will be effectively shut down until Thursday.
Union leader Sergio Palazzo confirmed the strike, while revealing that tomorrow at 9am workers would carry out a protest on Sarmiento and Reconquista streets, in the Downtown area of the City. Assemblies will also be held across the country, a measure which could also affect service in branches.
«The banks and the Labour Ministry are making fun of us, they want a greater conflict. We are making them responsible,» the union said in a statement. Palazzo also warned that the industrial action could affect the stocking of banknotes in cash machines, as workers will not be responsible for filling the ATMs.
Bank workers carried out strike action and assemblies last week as they seek pay rises of more than 30 percent, as well as compensation for income tax burdens. The union is demanding a recovery of spending power for salaries, and that raises should be backdated to January 1 of this year.
