Supermarket, shopping mall sales up in March

The National Statistics and Census Institute has revealed that supermarket sales were up in March, rising 7.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Similar figures were recorded by the state statistics bureau for shopping malls. March saw a 7.3 climb in revenue in comparison with March 2014, while figures also improved on a monthly basis.

In supermarkets, sales were up 7.2 percent on February’s numbers. The jump was even more pronounced in shopping malls, which sold 10.7 percent more than the previous month according to official figures.

Without adjusting for inflation, supermarkets recorded revenues of 17.65 billion pesos in March, 26.4 percent higher than in the same month of 2015. In shopping malls sales were made totalling 2.82 billion pesos, a 21.1 percent climb.

Last week, Commerce secretary Augusto Costa affirmed that «consumption is rising and price variation is low,» while pointing out that «the companies themselves and even fake consultants recognise this.»

Costa also referred to the Now 12 credit scheme, extended for a second year in March. «It has been working really well and the business leaders see that.»
