Labour Minster Carlos Tomada admitted there were some “distortions” in the implementation of the income tax scheme but ruled out modifications as he called for less “drama” in the collective bargaining negotiations currently taking place.
“It is real that there are certain distortions in the implementation of the (income) tax; now, if that merits a reform, I have no information it is a matter that is at the highest level of power decision in the country,” Tomada said today.
“We have talked a hundred times (about income tax). I think there are matters that affect larger groups than the 8 percent of workers (who pay that tax),” the minister had said earlier today.
“It is not an issue I am indifferent to. We have to play it down, it can not be the central issue,” Carlos Tomada told reporters adding certain sectors were seeking to “install a special climate of drama” in wage talks.
“The first negotiation usually fails. It is good to understand this logic. Truth is negotiations are working,” he affirmed pointing out the federal government has offered no “guide” for salary hikes.
“We have no guide. Problem is that, when we make a drama of collective bargaining negotiations, what we do is to demonize salaries. That is no good. Wage talks belong to all, let’s protect them.”
