Economy Ministry says contempt appeal deadline is due on Thursday

The ministry commanded by Axel Kicillof has said that the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York has sent no “warning” to Argentina regarding a contempt order by Judge Thomas Griesa finding the country in contempt for taking steps to «evade» his rulings in a long-running dispute with so called “vulture funds” suing the country over its defaulted bonds.

Sources familiar with the story confirmed to the ámbito.com news website that the deadline for Argentina to present its appellant’s brief is due on February 26.

“The deadline to present the writ justifying the appeal against the contempt order (that originally expired on February 17) was suspended as a result of the presentation on behalf of the complainants with a motion to dismiss the appeal, with the coming deadline now being Thursday February 26,” sources quoted by ámbito.com said.

On September 29 last year, New York Judge Thomas Griesa held Argentina in contempt of court, saying the republic was trying to find ways to circumvent a prior order requiring it pay holdout bondholders at the same time as other creditors who restructured their debt in recent years.
