A funeral procession amidst heavy police protection led AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman’s body to the Tablada Jewish Cemetery, where he was buried in a ceremony held by Rabbi Marcelo Pollakoff.
About 200 citizens applauded, chanted «Justice, Justice» and sang the National Anthem as the carriage pulled through the streets towards the cemetery.
A wake for Nisman was held since Wednesday in a ceremony with his family and friends in the Buenos Aires City neighbourhood of Núñez. Nisman’s body was delivered to the family yesterday after his ex wife, Judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado, rejected to have a new autopsy performed on the victim.
The ceremony for the prosecutor’s family and friends was accompanied by a protest at the entry of the funeral home. A group of demonstrators caused damage to a wreath sent by the office of Attorney General Alejandra Gils Carbó while some threw stones from outside the service.
The prosecutor was found dead with a bullet in his head, laying on his bathroom floor on January 19, on the night before he was set to attend a congressional hearing to accuse president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and other officials of covering up Iran’s alleged involvement in the 1994 AMIA bombing.
