Berni denounces ‘operation against the gov’t’, says suicide theory less likely

Security Secretary Sergio Berni said that the investigation on AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman is moving away from the suicide hypothesis and denounced his death as part of an “operation against the government.”

Berni said that the suicide theory, which so far has been the main hypothesis, “needs further investigative efforts. We cannot fall into common sense’s simplism and rule it a suicide (…) We need to investigate whether this suicide was induced or if it was a homicide.”

“Everyone understands that this was a big operation against the government,” Berni said in a radio interview. He stressed that killing the prosecutor would boost even more the serious complaint made by Nisman last week against the president for allegedly covering up the 1994 attacks on AMIA Jewish community centre.

Berni detailed once again his actions when he arrived at Nisman’s apartment on Sunday night, which has caused controversy among opposition lawmakers who questioned him for arriving before than the State prosecutor at the crime scene.

He reiterated that he met Nisman’s mother at the apartment, who told him that the prosecutor was dead. “After I talked to the mother I turned around and there was judge (Manuel De Campos). We stayed there waiting for the prosecutor,” Berni said.
