Four sentenced to prison for Río Tercero explosion

The Federal Oral Court N° 2 in Córdoba province has sentenced to prison the four indicted in the probe for the explosion of a military factory in Río Tercero City in 1995 that killed seven and wounder over 300 people.
Retired military officials Edberto González de la Vega, Carlos Franke and Jorge Antonio Cornejo Torino were sentenced to 13 years in prison, while the former chief of the munition dump, Marcelo Gatto, was sentenced to 10 years.
They have been found guilty of “malicious damages followed by peoples’ death”
Former president Carlos Menem has been accused of being allegedly involved in the explosion of the military factory in order to cover up evidence of prior arms trafficking to Ecuador and Croatia between 1991 and 1995, a crime for which he has been separately convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison.
Both Menem and ex Army Chief Martín Balza have been acquitted for “lack of elements of proof”.
The explosion of the weapons factory on November 3, 1995 destroyed much of the town of Río Tercero.
