UTA hopes for ‘good government decisions’ to avoid strike

UTA transport union Secretary General Roberto Fernández urged the federal government to make “good decisions” to avoid a general strike that threatens to paralise transportation services nationwide.
In statements to media today, Fernández ratified the sector’s demands for an year-end bonus to cope with rising inflation and renewed calls to have the complementary salary payment – known in Argentina as “aguinaldo” workers receive in June and December – exempted from income tax.
“Inflation is not been tackled with, we are worried about tremendous unemployment and lack of investment. We have required a meeting with the (labour) ministry and we are happy for having been received (by government officials) but we can not find a solution and today the steps to take will be resolved,” the UTA head told reporters.
Although he provided no further details on the force measure the union could take if demands are not met, Fernánded did say that around 30 transport unions were likely to support an action plan.
“We hope for the government to make good decisions so that the strike does not take place. Let’s hope the government opens the doors, reflects and we can discuss the matter,” he warned adding that “decisions must be taken by the government” as only some business sectors are in a position to grant a year-end bonus while others can not, something he considered “a little bit discriminating.”
“It would be a good start if the government took income tax out from the complementary salary payment. It would calm down workers a bit.”
