Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Luis Segura has announced that the body’s Executive Committee has decided to hold another Transition tournament until June 2015, divided into two groups of 15 as the expansion to the Primera División goes ahead.
In a press conference held this evening, Segura also confirmed River Plate chief Rodolfo D’Onofrio and Boca’s Daniel Angelici as new AFA vice-presidents.
The successor to the late Julio Grondona explained that, in order to align the new tournament with the European seasons, the entity would adopt the proposal to play a championship lasting from February to June, instead of the year-long competition originally floated.
Other sources from the Executive Committee meeting, however, admitted that the decision whether to allow promotion and relegation in that period remained to be decided.
Another possible obstacle will be the approval of the government, who hold television rights to the top-flight under the ‘Football for Everybody’ programme. Since the government signed a contract with the AFA ensuring coverage from February to December, the scheduling change will have to be signed off by politicians before final confirmation is passed.
