Justice Minister Julio Alak and Justice Secretary Julián Álvarez were heading a debate over the reform of the Criminal Procedural Code at a Senate committee meeting today’s afternoon.
The Committees of Penal Affairs, Justice and Budget started to address a bill that has already sparked controversy mainly among social and human rights sectors that have questioned one of the most sensitive points of the project, the possibility of deporting foreigners when they are caught in the act of committing a crime.
Although most opposition blocs have praised the project that President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner submitted to Congress last week, some have expressed questions about it.
“It is a good tool, problem is who is going to apply it,” Radical Party Senator Mario Cimadevilla has said alluding to Prosecutor General Alejandra Gils Carbó. “From the very first moment I mistrusted the chief of attorneys’ impartiality. Furthermore, I did not join with my vote her post because I warned she answered with an evasive way the questions I made about matters that are sensitive to the power,” he insisted.
In the meantime, ruling Victory Front party Mighel Ángel Pichetto has considered the debate is expected to last all November before it is cleared to the floor.
