Álvarez on Code reform: ‘No one will be deported for stealing cable’

Justice Secretary Julián Álvarez explained that according to the proposed new Criminal Procedural Code foreigners who are found guilty of an ‘insignificant crime’ will not be deported.
The official said that the bill proposes that “when a foreigner, and one with an irregular legal condition, not any foreigner, is found guilty of a crime in the act, that is, if he is caught red-handed, what else can you do but to deport him?,” Álvarez said to Página/12 newspaper.
However, Álvarez pointed out that inmigrants found guilty of “insignificant crimes” will not be expelled from the country. “No one will be deported for stealing cable,” he exemplified.
“The bill aims at those who enter the country to steal. That’s all,” he stressed.
The official defended the reform proposed by the Executive and he said that such laws “are present in many countries.” Álvarez highlighted that it does not affect Argentina’s migration policy in any way.
