Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich has defended the government’s plan to reform the Criminal Procedural Code, saying it will create a new, “faster and more efficient tool to fight crime.”
In his daily press briefing at the government house, the chief of ministers praised the reform, which will soon be sent to Congress by the Executive, will bring “celerity and transparency” to the country’s Judicial system.
Capitanich explained that the bill seeks to switch from an inquisitorial system of criminal justice –in which the court is actively involved in the case’s investigation– to an adversarial system –where two advocates represent their parties’ positions before a jury.
The official said that starting next month, when Uruguay reforms its own Procedural Code, “Argentina will be the only country in the region with an inquisitorial system.”
