Gov’t denies encouraging importers to buy US dollars in parallel market

Following a new record high of the so called “blue” dollar -that closed at 15.95 pesos yesterday-, cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich dismissed rumours that the government is encouraging importers to buy dollars in the parallel market.
“It is a lie, a baseless rumour, that the government had encouraged companies to operate in the illegal market for dollars to import,” Capitanich said in his daily press briefing at government house.
The Argentine Republic Importers Chamber (CIRA) said yesterday that the Central Bank had suggested importers “to get dollars in the parallel market.”
The kirchnerite official said those were rumours, part of a “financial speculation strategy by interested parties.”
“There is no restriction to make legal operations (to buy dollars),” the chief of ministers stressed.
Capitanich also called for «swift» action against those who trade the informal dollar rate on the streets of Buenos Aires City, the so called «arbolitos» (little trees). «Judiciary must act to enforce the exchange criminal law,» the official said when asked by reporters.
