A male suspect aged 22 has been arrested in connection with the murder of Melina López, the teenager who was shot to death close to the controversial Pope Francis informal settlement in Villa Lugano, City of Buenos Aires, the second arrest made as security services investigate the case.
According to police sources, the youth detained is called Jonathan Aranda, who handed himself in to authorities and is believed to have confessed to taking part in the original robbery, but not the shooting itself. He will remain in custody alongside the other man arrested, Carlos Cañete.
Melina was killed on August 19, while walking to supermarket Jumbo with her boyfriend. The pair were attacked by two armed thieves at the intersection of Fernández de la Cruz and Escalada avenues, with the girl receiving fatal bullet wounds after an altercation with the aggressors.
Just days after the tragedy Metropolitan Police and Border Guard detachments evicted residents from the Pope Francis settlement, where they had set up home in February protesting against a lack of suitable housing in the City of Buenos Aires.
