Lear autopart back to work after two-week paralysis

The employees of US-based autoparts company Lear went back to work today, after the plant in General Pacheco, in Buenos Aires province, was paralysed for two weeks due to a labour protest.

An official from the Ministry of Labour arrived at the factory at 6 am today and confirmed that four workers that had been laid off have been re-hired, after which the Automotive Transport Mechanics’ Union (SMATA) allowed employees to go back to work and reactivate the plant.

However, the fate of other 64 laid-off workers who claim their rehirement remains uncertain.

“Today, Lear plant is back to work once again. We had to guard the factory because a tiny group of radicalized unionists try to prevent workers from going inside,” said Security Secretary Sergio Berni, who arrived at the plant by helicopter at 7 a.m. to coordinate a massive police operation to avoid pickets in the Panamericana highway.

“Over 500 workers went back to work,” Berni specified.
