Ahead of a new hearing called by court-appointed mediator Daniel Pollack, in a race against the clock to the July 30 deadline set by US Judge Thomas Griesa for Argentina to pay its holdout creditors, Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich said the country «is embroiled in an absurd situation caused by an absurd ruling that should be fixed by the judge himself”.
“We cannot stand the trampling of vultures and judges that do not respect the country’s sovereignty, or that of countries that intent to extort the sovereignty and the will of the people,” the Kirchnerite official said in his press briefing at Government House.
Asked about some media accounts that said that Paul Singer’s NML Capital Ltd –one of Argentina’s bondholders- could ask Griesa to extend the stay requested by Argentina, Capitanich said “there has been no official statement from the counterpart” on the matter.
He reiterated that Argentina is willing to dialogue and pointed out that it honours its contracts and will continue to do so, and said the judge, that in the end “has not decided on anything so far”, could not “alter” this.
“Argentina stands for its dignity as a sovereign country,” Capitanich stated.
