The Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich referred to his meeting with the head of the pro-government CGT labour confederation Antonio Caló yesterday and said the demands to raise the income tax exemption ceiling are political. Capitanich pointed out that the number of workers and pensioners affected by the tax has not increased after this year’s wage talks.
“The worker or pensioner who were not reached by the income tax in September, October, November, January or February last year is not reached now. The situation in terms of the number of workers has not changed,” Capitanich explained in his daily press briefing at Government House.
“The demands may or may not increase but it is because of political reasons, not for [an increase] in the number of workers or pensioners included in the tax,” he stated commenting on his meeting with CGT’s Caló yesterday.
He reiterated that if a worker earnt less than 15,000 pesos in 2013, he will not have to pay the tax even if his salary was increased this year after wages negotiations.
However, the Cabinet Chief admitted there are “exceptions” based on the tax structure itself that “are being analyzed”.
Capitanich rebuked CGT’s claims of the tax being a levy on labour. “It is not a tax on labour. It has to do with the incomes derived from labour”
