President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner accompanied by the Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo inaugurated seven train formations for the Sarmiento railway at Villa Luro station.
“The completely modern trains have arrived,” the President announced. The Chinese-made formations aim to replace old carriages on the suburban Sarmiento line. “Until today, 241,000 passengers [could take the Sarmiento train], from now on almost 400,000 passengers will be allowed,” Cristina specified. “One in three formations will be modern now,” she added.
The head of State also praised the formations’ security system. “[It has] automatic brakes that also auto-generates energy for other trains. The world’s most advanced”. She also celebrated the automatic train door system: “No one will be able to travel hanging from the train now, because it will not take off until the doors are closed”.
Cristina pointed out that the government’s investment in railways –until 2016- totals 4.8 billion dollars. The president confirmed that new formations will be inaugurated on September 15 to complete the renewal of Sarmiento railway.
Earlier today, the Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich stressed that the billionaire investment for both passengers and cargo trains will “improve the quality of life of passengers and the net income of manufacturers”.
