In his daily press briefing Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich referred to the 0.8-point decline in unemployment rates in the first trimestre of 2014, according to the INDEC statistics bureau. He pointed out that there has been “no destruction of jobs” or an increase in the number of people looking for a job.
INDEC numbers show that unemployment rates came in at 7.1 percent, marking a 0.8 percentage-point decline compared to the first trimestre of 2013. Capitanich said that seasonal factors may have influenced and added figures show a decrease in rates with no destruction of jobs in the first months of the year.
Capitanich also praised the “active [job] policies” that Latin American countries have been implementing since the 2008 global economic crisis, in contrast with austerity measures implemented in Europe, where 17 countries currently show 11.8 percent of unenmployment.
The head of ministers also addressed the situation in the automobile industry. He said “suspensions are not layoffs” but rather “a temporal measure agreed between employees and business owners.”
